This book is more than just interesting quotes. I gained much more insight into the history of the American labor movement. People's words can be very effective in giving later generations a sense of what really happened. This book offers much to think about. I was struck by the contrasts of courage and pain, strength and cynicism that were evoked by the quotations of real people.

This is a labor quotation sourcebook and provides an intriguing survey of issues of work and labor drawn from the experiences of the American labor movement. Writers and speakers will find this packed with quotes organized by topic, from civil rights, economics, politics and the law to the corporate world and unemployment. An excellent reference.

This book is a wonderful source of inspirational quotations. Through the words of plain folks and great thinkers, you are continually reminded of the spirit of hope and the advancement of the state of working people. The first chapter, This Working Life, has quotes beginning with the Bible and continuing with voices throughout history and from all over the world. The other 16 chapters are more prominently by Americans and about the labor movement. There is a lot more here than quotations. There are short biographies of labor leaders. Photographs and cartoons illustrate issues like unemployment, global competition, and working conditions. The book is a great reminder of how far the average worker has come in the last 100 years, how the fight for a decent living never ends, and how these issues effect all of us. Union members will find the resource directories helpful in finding many more information sources. Overall, a very well thought out book that's captivating and a good resource.

Jim Bridger meets a bunch of Texans who were on their way home from the California gold rush in the year 1853. Jim tells them of some heavenly lush land up for grabs in northern Utah. The Texans purchase some land, go home to gather cattle and drive them to their new home, but during the drive find tons of deathly trouble. Another great read.

This one is excellent. I felt like the people in the book were my friends. I hope we see more of these people. The book ended to soon. Ralph Compton is one of the best of the western writers. He makes it seem like you have just dropped in for a visit with these folks. The sound effects are excellent and make you feel like you are there. The story covers 4 cowboys that have come out of the gold fields of California to establish a large ranch on the Green River. They are orginally from Texas and they go home to get to buy a herd to take back to the Green River. What happens to them on their ride to the Green River. There are some interesting plots of the Mormans, and why they try and take over the land. All in all this story calls to be continued.

I had the great pleasure of learning from this book when it was still in manuscript form. For the first time in my long history as a student I found that I understood the text at first reading! The chapters generally present two approaches: the technical (scary!) and the commonsense -- with the latter truly written in a commonsensical fashion. In fact, it is so well written that it is possible to go over the material on one's own. The book is pricey, but it delivers on its promise.

Jim Sprankle, a carver of exceptional caliber, leads the reader through a step-by-step process in transforming a lifeless block of wood into a life-like work of art. No detail is left unmentioned, and the photographs provide a close-up view of the intricate carving and painting that make Sprankle's work highly prized. Every waterfowl carver should have this book in his/her personal library.

Discovering the Old Testament: Story and Faith is a colourful college textbook introducing the Old Testament. The layout is similar to Encountering the Old Testament (by Bill T. Arnold et al). Each chapter begins with learning objectives, questions to consider, and key words to understand. Coded side bars cover topics such as "The Apocrypha" and "Modern Translations of the Bible." Each side bar is coded as Interpretive, Theological, Historical, Cultural, or Archaeological. Chapters end with summary statements, questions for reflection, and resources for further study. Numerous photographs are included with a large number drawn from modern Judaism. There is a brief appendix on Jewish history from 331 to 63 B.C.

This 382 page book is very readable and probably appropriate in depth for a college textbook, although in this space cannot go as deep as, say, LaSor, Hubbard and Bush (Old Testament Survey). It is written from a conservative perspective but critical scholarship is presented in abbreviated form. For example, the standard dates for Second and Third Isaiah are presented in a paragraph. There is a general failure to engage such critical issues and the authors present "scholarly opinion" alongside "conservative evangelical" scholarship without always committing to a particular view. So on the authorship of Isaiah they write "There is no unanimous opinion on this issue among conservative evangelical scholars. Some prefer the multiple authorship view. Others view the entire book as the work of Isaiah of the eighth century B.C." (p 293).

Much of the content of the book summarizes the biblical content. New Testament interpretation is mentioned in theological sidebars where relevant and the reader is encouraged to apply theological insights to personal faith.

The majority of the book was written by Alex Varughese who also edited the work as a whole. Varughese and the other three authors are department heads of Christian liberal arts colleges (I do not know who Robert L. Lewis is [named in the ...description]. He is not listed on my copy).

This book will prove a colourful and readable introduction to the Old Testament, especially in terms of biblical content and life application. The numerous illustrations allow the reader to visualise Israel and modern Judaism.

Guardians Green is an eminently readable, intriguing book. This well-written and well-researched story about megaliths in New England and the hold these pre-historic enigmas have over us to the present, taking the reader on an all too short flight of fancy. This is a perfect "beach book", book discussion group selection, and all around greatly entertaining story. I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel!

this, my first introduction to natalie mckelvy was a real shocking treat. the book..... raw, no holds barred, and all too real, put you in the frame of the action. this book at the time put a toes on the ground look at the early aids epidemic. although the main charachter of the story is basically dumped on you find yourself pushing for her to get over an impossible hump in life while all the meanwhile you find yourself asking...why does she do this to herself? this book will surely open your eyes to a great author.

This was an enjoyable read. Some funny, interesting stories. I recommend it!

This book was fun and easy to read. Jim Chenoweth has a great sense of humor, and I really enjoyed reading about his relationships with the stars. The golfing tips are great!!

Ira Rohter has looked at Hawaii's economy with new eyes, and has seen that tourism is not as good as once thought. His vision of a kinder, more local, less-homogenized village-based tourist AND RESIDENCE experience has a wonderfully believable and welcoming quality to it. Why not?

A Green Hawaii: Sourcebook for Development Alternatives By Ken Boche Ka'u Landing. Feb., 1993 This book may be one of the most important books ever published in the State of Hawaii. I say this as one who appreciates good books, who values the ways in which books can help preserve Hawaii's unique cultural and biological heritage, and who sees books as, among other things, essential tools for communication. It is in this last use of books that A Green Hawaii stands out as unique. Very few books present a vision of Hawaii's future. About the only "books" that address the future are the "planning" documents published either by our governmental "planning" bodies or by "planning" firms hired by those bodies or by some real estate developer. All those documents are based on some very questionable assumptions, and most of them are written to plan for unsustainable "growth" and progress . A Green Hawaii critically questions those assumptions, shows how those assumptions do not work in the best interests of our citizens, and presents a vision of our future that is economically sustainable, socially equitable, politically democratic and environmentally sound. This book includes over 60 pages of footnotes, so that readers who want more information about the ideas presented can pursue it with little difficulty. The ideas are presented as an historical review of the previous half century as it might be written in the year 2010. In this way, not only is the sustainable vision of the future presented, but so is the path we might follow if we want to arrive there in the next 20 years. It effectively tells us how to get from here to there. Where there is very little mention of permaculture or its design methodology, it is as if our whole society has been transformed into a thriving, positive culture based on permaculture principles. We see in Hawaii's future an economy based on renewable energy and on diversified enterprises which are locally-owned and which serve local needs first. Just as a permaculture farm will integrate the production of many products, a green Hawaii will integrate work with leisure; social with political; rural with urban; aquaculture, agriculture and forestry with processing and marketing tourism with education about and appreciation of our unique heritage. Agriculture will be building soil, not eroding and poisoning it forestry will plant forests for the future, not clear-cut them; the fishing and aquaculture industries will increase their stocks, not deplete them; education will tap people's creativity, not stifle it; transportation will work for the people, not against them. In permaculture terms, we will invest in our procreative assets, those that increase in value, and in our generative assets, our essential tools. And we will stop investing in enterprises which decrease our long-term wealth. Rohter, the author, is also a co-founder of the Hawaii Green Party and a professor of political science at UH-Manoa. So it's not surprising to find a clear vision of how our society can be made more democratic and how communities can gain more control over their own future. As a whole, the book has few mistakes, and those 1 found seem minor (e.g., methane is not a suitable fuel for transportation end-uses; methane has too few BTUs.) The one thing I would like to have seen would be a clearer legislative program for the state legislature and the counties to adopt that would facilitate the establishment of a green Hawaii. The range of options which this book offers is staggering. And yet it is only a beginning, not really comprehensive at all. Again, it's like permaculture: no design is ever complete. There's always a way to make a site more productive. The only thing that limits the available options is the quality and creativity of the thought applied to it. This book is excellent in this regard. What we must do is take this fine beginning, expand it with our own creativity, and implement it into our own lives. If we all do so, our quality of life will improve and the future, for ourselves and for coming generations, will become more healthy and prosperous. END

I use this book daily (and I have the same book for Front Page 97). I appreciate the easy-to-follow style. My only disappointment is that it does not cover all facets equally - because it was one of the first books available after the official release? Some aspects about which I need to know much more, are dealt with in a less thorough fashion but it is still a great book. The tips and cautions alone are worth the price of the book!

I've been a Technical Writer for 8 years, and used Word/Office since '95. This is the greatest single souce reference book for Office that I've seen. It's not a tutorial, and the CD is basically useless, but the book is like an encyclopedia, with clear, well written explanations, and straightforward examples of virtually everything Office can do. A "must buy" for anyone who uses Office.
