Containing too many misprints.
Unfortunately, the 3rd edition of Mahan's book contains enormous number of misprints. Sometimes, it is impossible to understand what is meant by the author without consulting the previous edition. For example, in Sec. 4.1.5. the author refers in the text to the equation which apparently should be between Eqs. (4.126) and (4.127) but which had been omitted. At the same time, some evident drawbacks of the previous edition have not been corrected. For example, the definition of the thermodynamic average used in Sec. 3.6 is different from that used in the previous sections, although it is not mentioned in the text. Despite the book is an excellent introduction into the field of Many-Particle Physics, I would recommend to the customer to either buy the previous edition or to wait for a new one.

Bien detaille, comprehensible.

The Healers
The Healers, by Gerald Green, a 500 page tome published in 1979, has been in my personal library for many years. It's a story beginning in 1950 centered around brothers, one an ambitious cardiologist who achieves the position of chief resident at his hospital and who has a penchant for beautiful women and the extravagant life style.

The other brother is perceived as an angry "loser", but becomes the doctor who would come to fight against poverty, disease, and corruption. His battle brings him to the point of exposing his own brother's corrupt hospital administration.

The sister of this medical dynasty is a psychologist whose ambition drives her into the field of network TV news where she becomes romantically involved with a married network VP.

An entertaining read for those drawn to the medical world.

East and West by Gerald Green
I am halfway through the subject book (Gerald Green's "East and West"). I have found several historical discrepancies and I'm wondering how many there are that I don't know about. 1. Mr. Green refered to Camp Pendleton, twice in the timeframe of 1941. The US governement did not buy the land for Camp Pendleton until March of 1942. 2. He refers to Japan's Imperial Marines. Japan did not have marines. They had a Special Naval Landing force often called marines by US troops, but that is not what they were. 3. He refers to a Japanese major's rank insignia as "leaves". This one I'll have to look up, but I don't believe Japan used the same type of rank insignia as the US. Has anyone else complained about authors blowing it like this ? I think it casts doubt on the credibility of his work. Can you comment as well ? Thank You, Lee Rash

A Personal Review
A story of two families, one japanese and the other American, against the backdrop of pre-WW2, WW2 and a short post war period. Without seeming to take sides, the story takes the reader from Japan to the US and the Pacific Theater. We meet the young couple. He is a young Japanese academic and she is the total california blonde. From there, we read as they struggle, love, fight and find redemption...while Mr Green weaves other characters in and out, no less compelling. A good read. NOT history verbatim by any means, but good enough for me to say " and then what happened to them ? "

An Excellent Story Of Love And War
I bought this book many years ago when it first came out and it was one of the best books I have ever read. It tells the story of families in both Japan and the U.S. being affected by the war. I'll never forget reading the chapters about the detention camps for ALL people of Asian descent, not just Japanese. Many were American born Chinese,Japanese,Korean, etc. The love story of Julie and Kenji survives even when together at the camp. A wonderful book if you can find it!

Superhero with Human Problems
This book starts off at the point where Hal Jordan, ex-Green Lantern of sector 2814, had decided to give up being a Green Lantern (GL). He decided that being a GL had severely affected his personal life, and thus decided to start a normal life. However, Guy Gardner, another GL, is sore that he is Earth's GL only because Hal gave up the responsibility. Thus he keeps disrupting Hal's new life, and refuses to leave Hal alone. Things take a turn for the worse when a crazy Guardian decided to start his own collection of cities from around the universe. The book focuses a lot on Hal's thoughts, about the choices he has made, and what he wants out of his life. I would not recommend this book, unless one is into heavy issues in life.

Overall Good read
GL: The Road Back tells a good story, and Hal Jordan's concerns about how his ring and his duty has changed him and very thought-provoking. I think that I would recommend this book to long-time GL fans.

Issue #1and up
This story arc is the best of the series. A must buy if your a GL fan

Calculus: A Short Course to Confusion
We used this book at a course at New York University. If I didn't have a good background in Calculus before I took the course I would've been lost by reading the text. The examples which the author uses oftentimes do not represent the material that was covered during the section. There are occasional errors with the answers in the back. The author also does not use any visual aids to illustrate his points, making the reader very confused when trying to figure out how to grasp a particular concept. Even a simple concept like the power rule, is explained in this convoluted manner. I would definitely not recomment this book to anybody who wishes to learn calculus.

We used this in our calculus course
We used this text in our Calculus course at New York University. It is quite possibly one of the poorest written math texts I've ever used. I hated it, and do not recommend that anyone purchase it because it was so horrible.
