Which Book Is This, Horror or Nostalgia?
The book Thor is one of my favorites...assuming there are not two. The synopsis above does not seem to describe at all the book I and the reviewers have read. The book I so enjoyed described a loyal dog's silent, lonely, heroic struggle to protect his family from an enemy within which he had no chance of defeating. It's truly a wonderful book, in some ways in the spirit of Watership Down or Tailchaiser's Song. The book described in the synopsis, however, seems to be the story of a beloved pet in real life. Very confusing...if you find the suspense tale entitled Thor, on which I believe the movie "Bad Moon" (and equally bad movie, but not the author's fault) was based, pick it up. It's a wonderfully engaging one or two night read that will keep you up til dawn. I hope the author gives those of us who enjoyed the book so much another night or two of pleasure...it's a stretch, but if Bruice Willis continues to get into Die Hard situations, why not Thor? Thrilling, heartwrenching read. Poor kitty.

fantastic photography...a german shepherd lover's delight.
reviewer o.c., ca. certainly never saw or read the book. as a shepherd trainer and owner i would have to describe this a combinatin of poetry and fine art. genuinely touching. a remarkable epitaph to a dog that was loved and is missed.

So Very Sad when They Sent him too the Pound!
Thor was one of my favorite books! When the secret of the family's uncle came out was very scary! When a wild animal keeps coming and kills the young cat that thor actually loves he is sent to the pound and the owner crys as he is taken away. It certainly made me cry after a dignified dog was thrown into the pound!

The Blue and the Gray: The Story of the Civil War As Told by Participants: The Battle of Gettysburg to Appomattox (The Classic History of the Civil War , Vol 2)

Authors: Henry Steele Commager and Douglas Southall Freeman
Amazon base price: $19.00

marvellous works on the Civil War
With a name like Henry Steele Commanger one would expect him to be a writer of history. And boy is he!! A whole section in my library is filled with his amazing works.

This one is a two Volume Set - with Volume 1 starting with the nomination of Abraham Lincoln as President of the US and follows the events to the bloody three-day battle of Gettysburg, the highwater mark of the Confederacy. Volume 2 takes us from the aftermath of Gettysburg and follows the war to Lee's surrender at Appomattox.

The works are surprisingly slim considering what it covers, so this is not an in-depth look at the War Between the States. It does however give a gold mine of details. For someone looking to understand the war, its causes and the people that fought it, this is a wonderful place to start.

Highly recommended for the beginning or intermediate Civil War Buff.

The best collection of Civil War primary documents
There are over 400 articles and over two-dozen illustrations reproduced in this notable collection which is subtitled "The Story of the Civil War as Told By Participants." These words are taken from speeches, letters, editorials, diaries, memoirs, poems, articles, reports, orders, and even the sheet music of the day. Henry Steele Commager, the legendary American historian, covers every aspect of the war in his chapters: the events and issues leading up to the war, the great battles and campaigns, life on the home front as well as on the front lines and in the prisons, even the songs of the soldiers on both sides. You will find not only Lincoln and Lee in their own words, but ordinary soldiers and former slaves, along with ambassadors to foreign nations and women trying to keep the home fires burning. As a collection of excerpts of primary documents this is first-rate volume that will surely add to your knowledge about the Civil War, bringing a more personal touch than you get even with the historical narratives of Catton and Foote.

It's immediate. It's simple. It's great!
Just the notes connecting the first person peices of these volumes make for a good history of the Civil War! They're short but good. But that is not the point. The accounts themselves are by soldiers (and sometimes civilians) written as they lived the adventure and tragedy of the Civil War. Cavalry raids come to life. Battles materialize before your eyes. Even the "dull" days of waiting are filled with a vibrance. All this is done, not by "authors" but by folks like you and me. And it is true from the begining to end. The descriptions of the very first shot of the war at Fort Sumpter are absolutely paralyzing! They are from Mary Boykin Chesnut. And there is the Indiana farm boy who got the news that the war had begun while husking corn with his father. His surprise and sense of excitment riveted me almost as though I hadn't known of the war myself before I read his account. From these beginnings to Appomatox, this two volume series is a ripping good read. Buy these books! --- Scott Brundage

Douglas Gray treats his readers to 101 solid ideas on how they can put a computer to use to effectively start, operate, and maintain a business. Business categories include desktop publishing, researching, writing, editing, graphic design, multimedia, business accounting, finances, faxing, printing, training, Consulting, database services, E-mail services, and Website design services.

The second section discusses the actual setting up of businesses - assessing one's marketability, selecting a company name, an office, a telephone, other communications equipment, obtaining supplies, and dealing with the day-to-day matters involved in running a business. Most helpful is the author's advice about joining professional organizations, lecturing, teaching, and conducting seminars and workshops - any personal strengths should be exploited to further enhance one's business and career!

The final section discusses the actual setting up of offices - setting up the work environment, setting up office equipment, and selecting computer equipment and software. Shades of Gray (Historical)

GREAT STORY - TERRIFIC CHARACTERS!
Derek Fontaine was wounded in soul and emotions. Why had his father deserted him? Or was his mother not honest with anyone.

Amber Laughton proves that the more you keep secrets the more embroiled your life becomes. But hey, what a great character she turned out to be.

Gideon has a story behind him and he turns out to be a great friend to Derek even though they had just met 300 miles before the story starts.

Even with the vagueness of the scene where Derek gets shot, I am surprised he stayed in the saddle long enough to make it home let alone up to his bedroom. Wonderful care-giving action and emotions with Derek's healing.

Beau does need a lady friend to heal his heart and soul. Was really glad to hear that Nathan showed up. Loved the shoot-out with the KKK.

Great story - GREATLY RECOMMENDED --M -- good addition to your library.

Wonderful Debut!
This debut novel by Ms. Douglas is fast-paced and filled with fascinating and sympathetic characters. It is a story of healing and trust and the growing love between a man and woman who have both been hurt badly. Derek is a wonderfully sexy hero whose fairness and principles shine through the story. Amber is compelling as she deals with her ruined reputation and insists on being seen for who she is. Even the secondary characters add depth and dimension to a classic story.

I'm not sure if a sequel is planned, but I heartily hope the powers that be will let Ms. Douglas write a book for Gideon, Nathan and Beau. These guys are as HOT as Derek!

a heart toucher
I usually read more contemporaries than historicals, but this one really pulled me in. The peach pie scene was my favorite--what a wow for a love scene--but really loved the author's voice and style throughout. The characters seemed so real, yet the book also felt like I was jumping into that post-Civil War time; the author made you smell and feel and touch a different era and feel part of it. Bravo for a super read. Can't wait for this author's next book.

The World of Krynn, Dl16 (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Dragonlance Accessory)
Published in Paperback by TSR Hobbies (1988)
Authors: Douglas Niles and Michael Gray
Amazon base price: $8.95

Great set of mini-adventures for the Dragonlance Saga
The DL series was a huge leap forward for TSR - these modules featured a new emphasis on drama and storytelling that made the gaming MUCH more fun and involved for the PCs and the DM. Of course, at heart, being TSR modules from the 80s, they're still dungeon crawls! In this chapter (the final module!), all of the loose ends are finally tied up - we learn what happened to Kitiara, and most importantly, is revealed Dargaard Keep - the lair of Lord Soth himself!

packed full of information
This book is great for players of AD&D and fans of the dragonlance novels alike. It contains lots of info on the dragonlance world that is useful and interesting at the same time. My only regret is that it was not more in depth, but other products have made up for its lacking...a definite must have core for those books, though.

Decent Textbook.
I bought and read this anthology for my Medieval Literature class in college. The book includes an interesting introduction, parts of BEOWULF, parts of THE CANTERBURY TALES, SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT, THE WAKEFIELD SECOND SHEPHERD'S PLAY, the classic play EVERYMAN, a fragment of MORTE D'ARTHUR, and various other poems and short stories of Medieval English. Each major piece is prefaced by an introduction describing various details and history about the text. This book also includes some black and white pictures and copies of art from the period. Towards the very end of the book a glossary describing in detail medieval literary terms and such can be found. I sold most of my literary textbooks and anthologies, but I kept this one because I enjoy the literature of the period and it's also one of the more well put together anthologies that I have read. A nice reference book to have on hand if your interested in the really old and good stuff in English literature.

Great Book
This book was made for beginner or potential consultants. It follows step-by-step guidelines that are easy to comprehend. It has an excellent chapter on writing consulting proposals and includes a sample proposal format. There is a helpful chapter on setting fees and how to legally minimize paying taxes. I found the chapter on "Essentials of a valid contract" to be very useful, along with the outline of a sample contract. This book is a wonderful learning tool for any new consultant and a great reference guide for those already immersed in the business.
