Which Book Is This, Horror or Nostalgia?
The book Thor is one of my favorites...assuming there are not two. The synopsis above does not seem to describe at all the book I and the reviewers have read. The book I so enjoyed described a loyal dog's silent, lonely, heroic struggle to protect his family from an enemy within which he had no chance of defeating. It's truly a wonderful book, in some ways in the spirit of Watership Down or Tailchaiser's Song. The book described in the synopsis, however, seems to be the story of a beloved pet in real life. Very confusing...if you find the suspense tale entitled Thor, on which I believe the movie "Bad Moon" (and equally bad movie, but not the author's fault) was based, pick it up. It's a wonderfully engaging one or two night read that will keep you up til dawn. I hope the author gives those of us who enjoyed the book so much another night or two of pleasure...it's a stretch, but if Bruice Willis continues to get into Die Hard situations, why not Thor? Thrilling, heartwrenching read. Poor kitty.

fantastic photography...a german shepherd lover's delight.
reviewer o.c., ca. certainly never saw or read the book. as a shepherd trainer and owner i would have to describe this a combinatin of poetry and fine art. genuinely touching. a remarkable epitaph to a dog that was loved and is missed.

So Very Sad when They Sent him too the Pound!
Thor was one of my favorite books! When the secret of the family's uncle came out was very scary! When a wild animal keeps coming and kills the young cat that thor actually loves he is sent to the pound and the owner crys as he is taken away. It certainly made me cry after a dignified dog was thrown into the pound!

The Observation and Analysis of Stellar Photospheres
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (December, 1975)
Author: David F. Gray
Amazon base price: $49.95
Used price: $22.95
Average review score:

Essential, fundamental and superb, yet not for beginners
This is a classical textbook on several issues of the analysis of stellar spectra. It is thorough, objective, very clear and superbly written, with illuminating physical insights and conceptual discussions. The reader will also benefit from the accurate mathematical treating. But it is not an undergraduate text: many topics are discussed in such a way that leaves the uninitiated feeling that the concepts have dropped from the sky. At times the discussion is brief and to the point, which is perfect for anyone who has studied the topic before and wishes a deeper understanding; again the novice might find him/herself unable to follow. The presentation of observational results throughout the text, corroborating the theoretical background, is very commendable. An excellent text to the very advanced undergraduate or beginner graduate student, with few rivals in the market.

This classical book is a must for astronomy students
This is a classical book on the astrophysics of stellar photospheres. Its content is accurate and thorough but yet simple enough for beginner undergradute students. For a more advanced approach see "Stellar atmospheres", by Dimitri Mihalas.

Kaboom!
This book has renewed my spirit for cooking. So simple in tasks, yet with the essence of true cookery, I have found a bible. Evoking the great repasts that my grandma used to lay on at a moments notice, this book has brought me close to understanding the old ways of cookery. The beauty of this book is that it beholds traditions alongside every new convenience, and is still as pertinent today as when it was written in 1957.

one of the best cookery books ever.
The summary on the Amazon site suggest that this is a book on French cookery. It actually covers a much wider range of peasant cookery from the Mediterranean region including Spain, Italy and Greece as well as France. The approach is practical and straightforward but pays due attention to authenticity. Even though many of the recipes which were unfamiliar and exotic 40 years ago are know well known, the elegant writing make this a book to read as well as cook from.

Submarine goes "glub-glub"
Andrew Williams has presented us with a true gift in historical writing - a narrative account of the U-boat menace against merchant shipping in the North Atlantic during the Second World War.

The author taken words from the mouths and memoirs of the participants and affected people to develop a fascinating portrayal of the war at sea between the German U-Boats and the merchant marine vessels of Britain and America.

Starting with the creation of Donitz's fleet and progressing through the high times (or, as the sailors called them, the "happy times") of the U-boat war, on to the final defeat of the German navy, this book is one not to be missed. The boat touches on such important topics as Operation Drumbeat and the Enigma machine, both of which were critical to the success (or failure) of the U-boat war.

The book does not focus primarily on life on a submarine, as might be expected, but instead truly focuses on the war within the war - the German effort to isolate Britain and starve her by sinking ships faster than the Allied forces could build them, and the Allies' desperate efforts to prevent the Germans from achieving this goal. In line with this effort, Williams brings the participants in this war back to life with his choice of utilizing their words and memoirs.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the naval war in the Atlantic ocean or the reason why the Allies were finally able to defeat the German naval threat and go on to win the Second World War against the Germans.

Clear presentation of biochemistry fundamentals

3rd Louisiana Infantry, 9th Louisiana Infantry.
The four Pierson sons, intelligent, and well-educated for their time, originally opposed secession but served their country whole-heartedly in all theaters when the War came.
The letters of three sons are contained here, preserving valuable insights not only of battles and camp life but also frank opinions of the behavior of high officers and politicians. The tenacity of the Piersons, through sickness and wounds and hunger, in a War they didn't welcome, is fine testimony to the courage and patriotism of the Condederate soldier.
