This book really helps the reader to understand who Henry Ford was and how is life took place. Very nice illustrations to help intepret the book even easier

This book is very well written and would be of interest to kids from 4 to 14! I love the design - large photographs, and the little interesting details of Henry's life. For any child who prefers machines to marbles...

I absolutely loved this book after I checked it out from the local library and was determined to get my own! The book gives a good look at all sorts of things like toys, clothes, games, technology, as well as all other aspects of Victorian life! A very nicely written book about growing up in the Victorian era, I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to see what life was like back in 1904!

I use this book in my classroom as a reference book. It contains plenty of information about toys, dolls, games, and the things that children do at different stages of American History. The students enjoy this series, as most history text books do not focus on children's activities of a time period.

This is a wonderful book for adults as well as children. The sad history of the exploitation of women and girls in the United States is laid out in stark reality, and the uplifting story of heroic girls, women and men who worked to right these great wrongs makes it an ultimately joyful read.

The author takes us from the colonial period when the abused souls tended to be native born through early days of the twentieth century when those devoured by the shops and mills came from across the sea.

The photographs and drawings are perfect for the story.

I am pleased to recommend this brave book to all who believe in the American dream and in those who set it straight.

I teach a middle school program for gifted and talented students. This year I used "Read If You Dare" for their literature unit. I chose the book for three reasons: 1. It tied in with the mythology units taught in their regular classrooms. 2. The stories are classics and gave me the opportunity to discuss and introduce more works of Chaucer, Hawthorne and Bierce. 3. It contained a story by Stephen King, a favorite author for many students.

In short, "Read If You Dare" was a hit with my students. Even gifted children can be reluctant readers, and this book, with its short, high interest stories, was a Godsend to them. It was wonderful to watch the kids put away their Pokemon cards to gulp down "real literature" for a change.

The only problem I had was with the profane language in Stephen King's story. I read that Mr. King would only allow this story to be used if it were kept "in tact". Evidently it's been a long time since Mr. King has been in a room full of sixth grade boys, where even the mention of the word "ball" sets off a flurry of giggles, nudges and winks. (Heh, heh, she said,"Ball.") I was able to discuss the language with my students, and told them I was uncomfortable with it, but the overall excellence of the book led to my choice to use it. I doubt I would make the same decision to use it in a regular classroom, and that would be a shame.

By the way, I'm on line now looking for a similar book to use next year. Read, won't you do it again? "Read If You Dare - Part II"?

I was amazed to find this title at the Texas Library Association Conference in Houston, Texas last week. The book jumped out at me when I passed the American Girls exhitbit booth. The colorful cover conveys a realistic scene from Felicity's time in U. S. History that took me back over 200 years. From the first page to the last, I was riveted to find out more details. The paintings, maps, and drawings help to tie together how colonists lived and carried out their daily chores in their families and in their communities. Cutaways and aerial scenes take the reader into the action of the time, especially those where girls and women were active in the Revolutionary War: Sybil Ludington who was a Patriot soldier and Eliza Wilkinson who refused to play her guitar for a British soldier. I give this book 5 gold stars and hope to read the other Welcome to the American Girl books soon.

Culled from the diaries, letters, advertisements, newsreels & newspapers of those years, you will read what it was like growing up in the 1940s in a world at war & what the family & the nation did to ensure there was enough to eat & enough to fight with.

I was a little girl "over there" during these years, so I picked up this bright history book with a certain degree of remembrances of things past.

This is an interesting way of looking at history - from a girl's point of view of how a world war affected her childhood. While Molly is a fictional character, there are enough women still alive who can attest to the veracity of Molly's experiences because the places & the times of her story are real.

One glaring omission is any reference to the daughters of Japanese-American families incarcerated in camps in the wilds of the American West for the duration.

Molly's World of 1944 is filled with nostalgic icons & while it contains magazine-like sidebars, photos & articles on everything from clothes to factory work to dogs to changing from war time to peace, it is couched in bland, politically correct language.

Notwithstanding the squeaky-cleanliness & disturbingly superficial information, this is a worthy bridge to a time that was. A way to connect today's girls with their grandmothers' girlhood.

I found this book to be a great read about the 1940's, as did my grandparents, who were teenagers back then. However, I felt that it muted things a little...such as the war, the nazis, and what was really going on. The actual Molly books do a better job of bluntly protraying Molly's world by pointing out the hardships faced during the war. Out of all the books I read about the second world war, this one only skims the surface. But it is perfect for the person who is just learning about the war. And it did bring back many a memory to my grandparents, who remember many of the things described in the book.

This book is simply a marvel.It talks about how life was in 1944 using first hand sources, like real snapshots, posters, helmets. It's the must have book for any girl studying WW2 and, of course, for any Molly's fan. I would recommend it for girls age 10 and above, but even a younger child might appreciate it with the help of a parent, or, better, of a grandmother that can add information on how her life was in those days.

This book wasnt very good at all. It seemed as if these things could really never or rarley happen to anyone in acual life. I think that if they were to re-write this book, they should make the stories more realist.

READ for your life is an OK book, but I didn't really enjoy it. The stories are written in such a manner that they seem to be quite exagerated. I was also dissapointed when i found out that a few stories were not in their original form but had been changed in a few pointless ways. Several stories were condensed from novels or had been published somewhere else. one story had in fact been first pblished in reader's digest magazine.
