I WAS HOMELESS FOR SEVEN YEARS!
The NAEH is a marvelous organiztion for helping the homeless. I downloaded a survival guide from the NAEH. It's incredible! But let's review this book. It is just wonderful! And costly! And I paid $35! You can order it from Amazon.com for only $28. The proceeds go to the National Alliance for Ending Homelessness. There seems to be some misunderstanding about the homeless. And this book has a tinge of that. But it is not as bad as some books on homelessness which deal with the subject. One has to be homeless to really understand. One suffers from what I call the "pyramid effect". This applies to all the poor. And especially the blacks. When you are homeless, your fear is exponential. Simply said, the less your resources, the more your fear will expand. Just imagine a pyramid. Now go down that axis from the center, and you will see that fear expands the more your resources dwindle. Some symtoms that I experienced were the frequent need to urinate. Putting my forefinger down my throat so that I could vomit. This seems to give some release to the fear. One needs to rent a storage bin. This will give one access to a washroom. But one should also "mark" a fast food restuarant for cleaning as well. And you have to keep clean. The NAEH hammers away at this. I am glad the proceeds from this book are going to them. A job? I think I tried for 20 or 30 jobs during this period. And I actually worked! One needs to go through thrift stores and get the feel for buying. A lot of the homeless that I met seem to be women whose spouse died and they simply didn't know how to handle money. I knew one who went insane. I also found that my sexual desire and my craving for junk foods went WAY up! This is to escape the present moment. One of my homeless friends went to prostitutes, got AIDS, and that was it for him. I don't know where he ended up! He just dissapeared. And you have to forget the jobs after awhile. I had a beautiful sports jacket, black dress shoes, nice slacks, hair cut short, and a dummy resume that I had written at the library. But the interviewers can always sense when you are scared. Which you are all the time when you are homeless! I remember their seeing my eyes filled with tension and fear. That's it. Out you go. And it is something you can't fake (your level of fear) unless you take drugs first. Which are deadly. But I did get a job for $4.25 an hour. The money just dissapeared it was so little. The manager kept jumping on me. I yelled back and quit. Getting an "entry level" job while being homeless is much like diving into a barrel of water from 1,000 feet above. The chances are not very good. This book exemplifies an attempt to get at the root cause of homelessness with words and pictures. It suceeds, somewhat. My symtoms started to dissapear when my homelessness ended over three years ago. But three still remain. 1) I don't want any posessions. I might lose them. 2) I don't trust anybody. 3) I don't want to owe anybody anything. It complicates matters. This is a wonderful book. BUY IT! Oh. Vote for Al Gore. I saw Milton Friedman on cable. He stated that the Libertarian Ideal is not yet feasible. Whoever you vote for, good luck! And BUY THIS BOOK!

Surprisingly good photographs - a visual treat
I wasn't expecting much from this book. I assumed it was the vanity project of a second lady with time on her hands. What I found, instead, was an incredible collection of excellent photographs from a talented and experienced photojournalist. Skim past the family pictures (except for the one of Al as Frankenstein!) and concentrate on the pictures that document some of the most important people and places of our day. I'd recommend this book to any photographer who wants to be inspired by fine work.

A great pictorial with striking innocence
Tipper Gore provides a very unique perspective on life in the public eye through this pictorial. Her simple comments and striking pictures tell a story about the Gore family, public affairs in the U.S., and people in general. There is an innocence of the pictures, they present themselves at face value and are very real. Perhaps having someone like Mrs. Gore nonchalantly taking pictures of some of the most powerful and important people from around the world when they least expect it would solicit such simplicity. The photographs are very professional as well. A good gift book for anyone interested in politics or anyone looking for a unique book about family life in the public limelight with a clever twist.

a good gore picture book
What a wonderful book Tipper wrote. I love the photos she took. She is a very professional photographer. She and Al Gore are my biggest admirers in Washington. Though, it was sad to see them leave the White House. But guys, keep democracy alive! Good book, Tipper! And Al, I'm voting for you for president in 2004! See you then!

Okay, but not great
While the Gore's have captured some nice pictures, I really can't justify the price of this book for what you get. There are other picture books available that are better and cost less.

Get the other one
This book didn't blow me away. There are some good pictures, a lot of so-so pictures. I'm not sure how anyone else could have done a whole lot better. One picture is seared into my mind. It is orange. If you have read the book, you may know what I am talking about. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Gore. On the other hand, "Joined at the Heart" is excellent and I highly recommend it. This one can be skipped.

Worth a Thousand Words
It's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and this book proves it. The Gores have said they went through fifteen thousand photographs before choosing the ones they've included, and they've come up with some real winners. One of the cleverest, on P.62, shows a baby clutching a bottle against her face while a business-suited man sits on a nearby bed, clutching a cell phone in almost the same position. For emotional impact, I've seldom seen a photograph comparable to one by Alex Webb on P. 182, which shows a mother tending to her baby on a rooftop. In the background is the lower Manhattan skyline, almost blocked out by the smoke and ash of September 11th. Although the book is expensive, this picture and others make it well worth the price.

tipper was tippsy and al was fuzzy
Can't sleep, don't read this - it is so pathetic that even gore supporters will be embarassed... The premise is that we (you, me, our parents-children-grandparents-friends-etc can learn something from tipper and al about life. gore ... have hit the big time with this one - they are the ... . Yes, sure al wants the democrats to beg him to run for president in 2004 and this book is meant to present a jimmy carter like image (read that as: i am a great person, a meaningful person, an humanitarian.. really, i am honest and caring - please love me)... and by the way, the love of my life, tipper my wife, is a really, really significant person too, please love her too.

anyway, this book is not worth the recycled paper it was created on....enjoy

Self-evident truths 'boldly' proclaimed
In this book, the Gores share incredible insights that they think the rest of us haven't figured out yet -- for instance, "nourishing relationships within a family is critical," "there is no substitute for time shared as a family," "all families have a language of their own," "love is at the heart of families," , "every homeless person is an individual.", "parental involvement as children get older remains vitally important."

Sorry, Al & Tipper, but we already *know* that. In addition, it propounds a massive increase in the nanny state -- "people need decent wages, job training, child care, health care" -- again, well, Duh! That's not the question -- the question is, who can provide those things, the responsible individual or the federal government managing our lives from cradle to grave?

Al Gore (& Tipper) are intelligent, educated people. This book doesn't reflect that. I thank God that the Florida Supreme Court was stopped, and that when the actual votes were counted (& recounted, & recounted, & recounted) that George W. Bush was elected President of the U.S.A. -- if this is an example of Al Gore's best work, we're far better off.

Give them a break!
Al and Tipper Gore are two of the most thoughtful and decent people I have ever had the honor to know. I attended one of their Family Reunion conferences (the reason this book came to be) this past fall and was extremely moved by the very real and touching testimonials of some of the participants. Whatever party you belong to, no one can deny that Al Gore was a good, decent and honest public servant who dedicated 24 years of his life to the service of his country. Joined at the Heart is thoughtful and well written. It is o.k. to not like the book, but it is not o.k. to write a review attacking him for mistakes he didn't make or for the faults of any other public servants. These reviews are meant to help readers decide whether to read or not to read. When you use the opportunity to attack him simply because you don't agree with his politics you do other readers a disservice.

TIPPER GORE - Activist, Author, Photographer
This book is...OK, but it's not what I expected. It's rather elementary, both in content, length and especially in presentation. It looks and feels like a short children's book, and the binding is that of either a child's book or a small cookbook. With three areas of her life and work mentioned in the title, it barely skims the surface of any of them. There must be better books on Tipper Gore out there somewhere.

Something is wrong with you if you don't agree with me....
Ok, the title is obviously sarcastic but it is also what I believe to be the underlying idea of censorship. Why does the government, Tipper Gore, or anyone else get to decide what is right and wrong for everyone else to see, learn and watch? This denotes that her opinion is somehow better than everyone else's and it isn't enough for her to be absolute in her own beliefs as an individual, everyone else has to agree.
People should be allowed to freely express themselves by saying whatever they want to say no matter how many people find it offensive. If you don't like it, leave. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and has the right to express it (even Tipper). The problem comes when an opinion gets forced down everyone's. Censorship SHOULD be allowed in the private sector though, such as this very website, because censorship is a form of expression in itself when it comes to your own material. In other words, "If you don't like my website because certain words aren't allowed, make your own." It is the totalitarian attitude that the government should be allowed to censor every single form of communication that blatantly disregards the very 1st amendment.
Adults should be able to decide what they want to see hear and listen to. Now of course this book is directed at parents for their kids so that leads to the question, who gets to decide what kids can and can't watch? The answer is simple: their parents! I think it's a parent's responsibility to raise a child as they see fit. Given that in this book she only gives advice, but in the real political world she believes in imposing censorship. It's probably a good idea to know the author J. How would Tipper Gore like it if the powers shifted and someone was telling her how to raise her kids?

ALSO: I highly recommend ALL PARENTS see the South Park Episode: Cripple Fight. It has great messages about censorship along with the private sector and the government and more! Plus it is great fun!

well its different!!
Im never suprised by what right wing fundamentalists will come up with next...There's often a string of ideas that are put together to form a belief system, but with this you dont even get that. It's a confusing read that seems to contradict itself...concerned with a way to raise your kids "the good way"... this is more of a list of how to find "every nasty thing society has ever produced" viewed by an artistically devoid and philosophically empty mind set. To me this seems like the sort of thing the SPANISH INQUISITION would be proud of touting about than a genuinely open minded aproach to parenting. Living in Europe Im removed from the blinkered media that exists in the US so can understand how someone could be allowed to release this as a viable parenting guide. Bordering on the edge of racism and blatant bigotist philosophy I feel that this book is a warning sign that shows that the people in power in the US are as removed from society as you could possibly get. This is more than out of touch. If you need this as a guide to parenting then you have failed in life due to the fact you have been sitting in a glass container for too many years.

DON'T READ: BOOK STINKS
The content of this book makes no sense. I could hardly finish it. The droll opinions make absolutely no sense. Parents, watch out for the star of david. A jewish religious symbol is your ticket to heck. I censored that one just for you Tipper. Tipper Gore is an off her nut radical and needs to simply be quiet and sit down. ROCK OUT CENSORSHIP!!
