Amazingly enough a concise, clear AND entertaining book about neuropathology. The only minus: The pictures are black and white - but on the other hand by this we are trained to memorize structures, not colours. So for me as a resident in neurology, a very good match - not a textbook but I do not want to become a neuropathologist but a neurologist to begin with...

This text serves as an outstanding reference for medical students, neurology and pathology residents, as well as practicing pathologists and neurologists. Both authors have a great sense of humor, which adds to the enjoyment of reading this book.

I've been involved with domestic AIDS work for a few years now, but this book helped even me to understand some things better. It has a very easy-to-read-format, quick reference for specific topics, and addresses foreign issues very well. There are some helpful tips and advice that you can apply in real-life settings. I would (and have) reccommend this book to anyone who wants to learn, or already has.

This book is an easy-to-understand guide for health workers throughout the world, notably in areas with few medical resources. It could be equally useful in a rural village in southern Africa, a major city in Thailand, or a Peace Corps worker's backpack. Designed as a manual for people confronting the HIV epidemic in their communities, it has been written to be easily accessible to those without medical or technical knowledge and without prior training in the prevention of HIV and the care of those with AIDS. Topics range from the biology of the virus to designing prevention programs, from the epidemiology of the disease to writing grant proposals. The authors discuss explicitly the risk factors for infection and suggest helpful methods for explaining them and assisting people to change their behavior. They avoid extensive discussions of medical treatments not available to the vast majority of the people in the world who have HIV, focusing instead on public health interventions that are possible in less industrialized settings. However, an appendix aimed at readers with medical training discusses common HIV-related illnesses and their treatment. The authors use contemporary examples, most drawn from actual experience, to emphasize the growing prevalence of HIV and to reflect successful prevention efforts by health workers around the world. Illustrations are used throughout the book to highlight important topics and to increase the accessibility of the text.

Dr. Goodman's complete and thorough review of essential fatty acids is a must have for any holistic practitioners library. He evaluates the research in a clear, concise manner laying out the truth about the effectiveness of fatty acids. His clinical anecdotes are helpful for understanding how EFA's can be helpful in practice or as a layperson. Dr. Goodman describes how EFA's are useful for conditions that many people may not even know about. I was impressed with this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in using natural medicine to promote better health and prevent disease.

When I first read the title of this book, I thought it would contain thrilling accounts of real crime, but the accounts were more "academic." The word "act" in the title has two meanings...the act of murder by individuals associated with the stage or screen. Goodman does a nice job of relating circumstances around nine crimes with the first crime taking 40% of the book. In 1897, William Terriss, a celebrated British actor, was murdered by a derelict actor, R. A. Prince. Circumstances and their outcomes are detailed in semi-story fashion, accompanied by a few drawings and photos. The other eight chapters are less detailed and include the suspicion of three 1920's American actresses of murder; Fatty Arbuckle, Buster Keaton's friend, suspected of rape leading to death; the death of Thelma Todd (the "ice-cream blond"); and John Dillinger's death in alley by the Biograph Theater. The book is indexed which causes me to believe that students and aficionados of theater would enjoy this book the most.

I quite like historial crime cases which is why I picked up this book but the book is very uneven. Each chapter is written by someone different and the whole has been edited by John Goodman - but I flatly disliked some of the authors in this.

The worst was the first chapter, "The Killing at Road Hill House" - I almost stopped reading the whole book after that However reading on I was gripped by "The Puzzle of Rumsey House" and really enjoyed the "The Origin of the 'Gigman' ". After that I just skipped the chapters that didn't take me in the first few paragraphs

Most of the cases were new to me. Goodman also collects them up from a range of times and places - the earliest was the death of Amy Robsart, wife of the Earl of Leciester in the 16th Century. The rest were mostly spread from 1800 to the late 1950's. Mostly English cases there were also a couple of French ones and an American case (The Frozen Footprints). I hadn't come across any of the cases before except that of "The Gigman" which is the infamous Hunt-Thurtell murder trial of the 1820's which has been made into a book.

Jonathon Goodman writes the most interesting (I think) case in the book called "A short walk to Eternity" about a certain William Corder who murders his mistress - Goodman writes with a nice dry tone but I just felt there was detail about the Corder not really explained. Perhaps I am being unfair and there isn't room in this short book. Perhaps we never really understand murderers. It wasn't so much his murder, but his life afterwards that seemed so inexplicable.

I see from the front page that Goodman has edited a number of other of these True Crime collections. If I came across them I would certainly browse through them but I don't think I would actively seek them out to read.

I was recommended this book by Amazon because of other purchases, and I thought, great: true crime, glamour, high society---all good stuff. I couldn't get more than a third of the way through this book, though, because of the author's rambling style. His run-on sentences can make you dizzy, and he'll go off on tangents in footnotes about the most irrelevant things. For example, there was a foot note that took up *half a page* about one detective marginally involved in the investigation: who his father was, how he'd joined the force, and a story about some big time gangster he'd busted---none of which had anything to do with the story of Starr Faithfull. I hope one day to be able to plow through the whole book, but for now I just set it aside.
