Being a beginner of an investing guy, this book is very useful for reading any article about economics, investment and finance. You can look up all the specil terms in this one. A perfect handbook!

An invaluable, up-to-date reference
This book, useful for both the novice and the more advanced investor, provides a thorough overview of almost every type of investment (including bonds, annuities, life insurance, etc.) and an comprehensive glossary of investment terms. It is handy when it comes to looking up unfamiliar terms and is an enjoyable overall read. The book also contains a listing of brokerages, banks, etc. with phone numbers and addresses. It is probably the authoritative volume on investing, which is to be expected coming from Barron's. It's definitely well worth it!

Artists and Writers Correspond and Sketch
The artists' musings in these provocative letters give us a fascinating insight into their fears and hopes, accompanied by charming and apparently impromptu sketches in watercolor and pen-and-ink drawings. Abrams as always has produced a first-class book. If there is any criticism to be made it is that some of the longer letters are completed in the appendix, making for some clumsy back-and-forth thumbing. Otherwise the editors have come up with some wonderful examples of the genre with illustrations ranging from elegant to fragile. This is a substantial volume that offers many absorbing hours of looking and reading.

Well Worth the Wait!
I loved this book-- I have had it on my wish list for a long, long time and my wonderful husband gave it (and three other books) to me for my birthday. It was so hard to not ignore everyone and just read it! There are letters from van Gogh, Gaugin, Collete-- all these famous people who corresponded with oftentimes other famous people. It really gives us a deeper understanding of who these people were by seeing what they wrote and how they interpretted their lives.

It is helping my daughter's French-- many letters are in French (with translations!) as well as giving us perspective on their lives and the times the writers were in. I have never sent a blank note to anyone and now thata I see how these letters are cherished years later, I resolve to keep up with my own work!

John of Gaunt: The Exercise of Princely Power in Fourteenth-Century Europe
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (1992)
Author: Anthony Goodman
Amazon base price: $45.00

Informative but boring
If you are desperately seeking information about John of Gaunt, then this is one of the few sources for it. The book does have a lot of information, but it is incredibly boring to read. Not really surprising, since most of the info seems to have been gotten from account books and inventories. The majority of the book reads along the lines of "On December 6th, 1373, he was at Pontefract castle with his wife. He wore a red shirt with silver buttons. Two months later he was back at the Savoy, apparently without his wife. He wore green hose and a black tunic." (It should be noted that I just made up that passage, but by my truth, that is how it sounds.) If you have a deep interest in John of Gaunt, then I recommend this book for you.

Now the classic work on John of Gaunt
John, Duke of Lancaster, was the son of Edward III, father of Edward IV, uncle of Richard II, and himself the pretender to the throne of Castile. He was also the richest and most powerful subject in England for most of his life -- and probably the most deeply and widely hated. He was certainly the principal target of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. A key player in the Hundred Years War, he was also on close terms with John Wycliffe and Geoffrey Chaucer. John's controversial career is thus at the very heart of English society and European politics during one of the nation's most turbulent periods, and this semi-scholarly and authoritative examination of the duke's mental processes, institutional goals, and dynastic ambitions is very useful to the understanding of England on the brink of a three-generation civil war.

A nice collection of historical documents.
JFK, a magical name in history. This book provides a way to investigate this man's life from other people's letters. You may want to read it.

For the record -an interesting glimpse at the life of giants
This is a compilation that in and of itself is quite mundane. The letters are not the most eloquent nor powerful prose that you are likely to have read. However, this is the correspondence of two of the biggest figures of their age.

The letters regarding the Vietnam war are the most interesting and provide some recognition of the clarity & forsight of Galbraith's mind.

Buy this book if you are interested in these men and the age of Camelot.

I simple story, well written. Better read it!
Most of the above reviews are pretty confused, these people cannot spell, or did not properly understand the story. Two men, Lenny and George work on farms, yet Lenny's mental problems lead them into trouble, and they have to flee many of these places. Once again, they work on a farm, and George helps Lenny and tries to keep him out of trouble. Lenny's need for female contact causes him to want something soft to handle, so he chooses furry animals. He is so strong that he keeps killing them accidentally. Curley, the bosses's son immediately hates Lenny feeling jealousy for his size and strength. Once Lenny is finally left alone with a puppy, he kills it, and Curley's wife walks in wanting to comfort him and have someone to talk to like most of the other lonely people on the farm. She ends up asking him to touch her hair and feel how soft it is, and Lenny is forced to run away to the bushes where George told him to go if anything happened. The story's ending is pretty good, we are told how George's love for Lenny is so strong that he will do anything keep him happy 'till his death. A well written book, good story, remake of the movie is well done. Unlike most hollywood movies, it makes you feel attached to the characters, and not ignore a simple gun shot. Morals of love, and lonelyness, survival of the fittest, and more. Short book, well worth reading.

Of Mice and Men: A tragic story of best friends
This book seemed at first to be almost comical, yet the story took a tragic turn. Lennie's character being as it is, made me feel sorry for him. He was like a big dumb animal, and just like Candy's dog ~ was of no help to himself. George befriended Lennie and tried to keep him out of trouble, but in further reading I found that not even George could help Lennie. The ending shocked me, and brought tears to my eyes. I recomend this book to all ages, and to those who have never liked to read. Just trust me on this, you won't be dissapointed.

This awesome book is abuot friendship.
This is a wonderful story about true friendship and strenth. It's great to get to know the characters. Icould'nt put it down, and I read it three times. I loved it every time.I recomend it just about anyone. Of Mice And Men is the perfect classic!

The World on a String: How to Become a Freelance Foreign Correspondent

Very practical, good information
As a journalism myself when I first buy this book I didnt expect the things I got at the end of it. Even that the book concentrates more in the cases of war correspondants, in the way the book is written we can use those examples in our careers even do that we're not working in the war zone by the time. The authors give the readers all the information he or she might need when they decide to break into freelancing. The book is very easy to read and when you finish with it you realize you do it rapidly and you dont get bored or even tired.

Practical and informative
Goodman tackles a broad subject with a concise eye for the practical approach to becoming a freelance foreign correpondent. He also might make it sound a little too easy, but I think his heart is in the right place and most of the book is realistic about what steps you should take before making the leap into the correspondent ring. Though still a college student, I have used much of Goodman's advice toward my goal of becoming a foreign correspondent by preparing here on the home front before embarking after graduation. Goodman focus on this side of the issue, preparing relentlessly before you go, is probably the biggest factor in sucess or failure in making the freelance leap work. Easy to read, full of helpful info -- though I wish it could be longer, it goes a long way in what it has.

Not a panacea but extremely useful
I find myself somewhat amazed at the financial analysts and brokers who find this book unsatisfactory. The poignant analogy coming to mind is offering the book "Accounting for Dummies" to a CPA. Of course it is unsatisfying. A book like this is not aimed at seasoned professionals in the field; rather, it's intended audience is grounded in those with little or no exposure to the securities/financial fields.

I have been involved in securities litigation consulting for almost a decade now. As my consulting practice has grown, I have hired many individuals, most of whom are not well-versed in securities/financial jargon. In significantly all cases, these new employees feel ill-at-ease initially when reviewing case files and documentation due to the learning ramp and educational abyss. I have found if I offer them a copy of the DICTIONARY OF FINANCE AND INVESTMENT TERMS (DFIT) on their first day, the learning curve is flattened and becomes much shorter in duration. As a matter of fact, several of my employees have taken the initiative to take their DFIT home to look for particular words/phrases common to their daily routines. By derivation, this makes the employee feel much less out of place and instills some level of motivation relative to their work (this has been a definite intangible benefit to my practice).

I keep one in my office and although I don't crack it very often, there are times when I'm not as familiar with a word/phrase and then, I rely on DFIT. This is similar to the situation of reading a book, seeing a word you can pronounce and know but aren't quite certain of its EXACT meaning. Let's face it, with over 5,000 entries in DFIT, most professionals, even those entrenched in the field, will find themselves fuzzy on certain words and phrases.

While DFIT is not a panacea, it certainly fills the void. I would recommend this book for anyone new to the finance/investment fields and most professionals who deal on the fringes of these industries. ... I don't really see how one can go wrong here (particularly given that many reference offerings go for hundreds of dollars).

Not Perfect, But Very Useful
When I first got into the financial field many years ago, I kept a copy of this book (an earlier edition) close at hand at all times. As I read The Wall Street Journal and Business Week, this book proved indispensible to help me understand concepts and jargon. Today, it is dog-eared, wrinkled and dirty, but I still turn to it occasionally. Yes, some of the definitions are outdated or incomplete. Yes, some terms are missing. But this is the best dictionary of financial terms I've ever seen, and I recommend it to anyone who needs an easy-to-use reference guide.

More Than A Book
Expect this little work to be exactly what it is titled, "Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms". It does not contain a story, or financial advice, or commonly used terms. It is a financial dictionary. Its binding is "professional softcover" and has very thin pages- required due to 600+ pages. I notice some reviewers' felt it was not worth the money. Where else can you find a professional dictionary of specialized terms for under $12 ? I found the book so useful, I purchased Barron's Investment Guide, which includes the dictionary. I recommend both of these books (...)

If your looking for an enthralling read, the Finance Dictionary is not that. If you're looking for an inexpensive, professional little reference book, full of pertinent terms and explanations, this one will definitely earn its keep.

needs pix
without question the illustrations are fine. the problem is that this book cries out for photos---photos that do justice to each structure, whether historic or contemporary photos are used. poisson has fine sketches, but more is needed. And not only photos, but perhaps more historical background to the buildings.

splendidly comprehensive, but thin on detail
This is, I believe, the most comprehensive one-volume catalogue of the notable buildings and quartiers of Paris. Some customer reviews criticise its lack of photos, but Poisson's elegant line drawings highlight the architectual character of his buildings and give the book a pleasantly personal touch. There are plenty of alternative books with photos. The Amazon.com review points out one disadvantage of the book. It is rather bulky in size and in weight--mainly as a result of its good-quality paper and its large quantities of white space. These features make it very pleasant to peruse, but not very practical as a guide book. It is best used as a review of one's past on-the-spot experiences or as a planner for future ones. The other weakness is that the text is very scanty. Most buildings are treated in only a sentence or two. The comments are always judicious, but one would like more.

A superb achievment. Wonderful illustrations and maps
Paris Buildings and Monuments is the superb achievement of Michel Poisson, a Paris architect. He made more than 850 drawings showing more than 500 well-chosen buildings. These drawings show everything that you need to know to decide whether to visit one of these buildings. Many of the drawings are front elevations. Some are floor plans. Others are three-quarter views. Still others are bird's-eye views.

Thanks to his carefully thought out design, the author makes it easy for you to find any of these building. First, he has organized the books to follow Paris's system of arrondissements. The book begins with the 1st Arrondisesment and continues, arrondissement by arrondissement, through the 20th Arrondissement.

There's an excellent, handdrawn map for each arrondissement, showing the exact location of each building described in the text. Also, there are smaller maps of neigborhoods within arrondissements, as well as bird's-eye views of larger building complexes such as the Louvre.

There is ample text describing each building, including the name of the architect who designed it and the name of the patron who paid for its construction.

The author shows the location of the Metro station nearest each building and makes it very easy for you to reach each building.
