I've read and re-read both this and its prequel "Jade Darcy & The Affair of Honor" more times than I can count. Jade, who could be considered the descendant of the Cyberpunk era, puts in another awesome performance among the Furgatos. Stephen and Mary have filled the pages with a mosaic of colorful characters for Jade to play off of or knock heads with. A *definite read for the SF adventure buff in search of something a little different. =)

Jade Darcy is a cyborg: a human being with a computer at the base of her spine that gives her inhuman reflexes and trained to do one thing: Kill!

Now the war is over and she has to learn how to be a humna being again.

With the most likable set of aliens and one of the best backgrounds I can ever remember,this is a book you hate to see end.

I have read this book at least five times and always reach the end of it with joy and regret. I have kept my eye out for more in this series but have never found any.

If you like this book,you may also like David Weber's "Path of the Fury" which is similar in premise but much more military in tone and plot.

Jade Darcy is one of the most memorable characters in SciFi. Somewhat reminiscent of Heinlein's Friday (high praise as I'm an RAH fan) - I've continued to hope for another in this series for the last 7 years. Maybe this year...

I read this book when I was very young, and checked it out of the library every year after that. Recently when I moved to Los Angeles, I searched high and low and eventually came across a mint-condition book.

Re-reading the book is always an experience. The experiences Hawk goes through, the people he meets, and the sight of seeing his first clone, strike a powerful chord in today's society. Long before the cloning of the sheep, this book was indeed well ahead of its time.

The first book I ever read, that I went cover to cover with out putting down. A book well ahead of it's time in both it's ideas of future warfare, and our society of the future. A well thought out storyline that take us from a certainly plauable near-future. To a far distant one, that remains fresh and insightful today as it did when first published. A must for all true sci-fi fans.

I believe the two books in this series to be the best I've ever read. The character is true to herself. And demonstrates the insecurites she has in a vivid manner. I found this to be a welcome change from the self assured always on top main character you get from most books. I was really able to connect with the character. Well done indeed

This was a GREAT book. The fight Jade Darcy is involved in is only partially the physical disputes that she becomes involved it. At a deeper level this book creates and evolves a strong character that has faced incredible adversity. And being not godlike, Jade has not fully overcome every betrayal.

This is the story of her continuing struggle to win the true battle, mastery over self. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has or is walking this road, when its rocky and sharp.

There is great entertainment value here too. Jade's cynical wisecracking, and sometimes coldblooded, humor is something that I really enjoy. I'm only sorry that there is only one sequel to the book.

I've bought this book many years ago (translated Dutch version) and I still consider it to be one of the cornerstones of my book-collection.

It is a title which is hard to find (especially in Dutch ;-) but definately worth your while...

I have an old copy of this book that dates back about 10 years. I've only seen one copy. Mine. Its a great read, I highly recommend it to any who should come across it.

I first read this story many years ago and am thrilled to see they've reprinted it since I lost my copy. The story is about professional Dreamers, people who create stories to be injected straight into a persons mind while they sleep. Most Dreamers can only create stories with a limited locale and a limited number of characters. A very few, however, can create whole worlds. When one of those master dreamers goes crazy, his audience becomes trapped in the world he created, unable to wake up, convinced they are in reality. Whether or not they can be freed asks everyone to question all beliefs they hold dear. It is an exciting, well-written story, that has made me question many of my own values and beliefs many times, since this book questions the inflexibilty of fanatacism. And now that we are post-9/11 the message I found with this book rings louder and louder.

Not bad.Not one of the best Family d'Alembert novels but not bad.

If you plan on reading any of the Family D'Alembert series, then I strongly reccomend that you read this first. It sets the plot and introduces the main characters. Frankly, without reading this book, you will probably get lost in the others!

The Enterprise takes Kostas Spyroukis and his daughter back to his new home planet. Spyroukis is an explorer and renowned colonizer of worlds, and has decided to settle on his final world. On the way home he collapses, and dies. Dr. McCoy discovers that the cause is a combination of argon in the planet's atmosphere, and zeton radiation emitted by the sun. Alone, neither of these things is harmful, but together they make up a slow poison. Captain Kirk sends the ship off on a mission to remove the colonists from the deadly planet, but on the way they are intercepted by a powerful being calling himself Enowil, who identifies himself as an Organian split with his fellows, and living in an uncharted region of space. He has brought the Enterprise, as well as a Klingon and Romulan ship to his home to help him answer the question of what he is missing. The first to discover will be given anything they desire. Kirk determines that he must participate, lest one of the others discover the answer and wish for an unbeatable superweapon.

The writing here is rather pedestrian, not what you would expect from a seasoned s-f writer such as Goldin. Too often I found myself saying, "Why don't they just.....?" The usual answer is, because then the problem would be solved and the book would be even shorter than it is (179 pages). Couldn't Kirk ask Enowil to intervene on the colony world, and set that problem aside? Eliminating the argon from the world's atmosphere would seem to be an effective method.

This book also suffers from a malady common to the Bantam paperbacks, which all seem to have a title with some variation of "world" in it. It involves an extremely powerful machine or being, which Kirk and crew must outwit, or persuade to their side, or some such. This was also a frequent problem on the TV series, and is a symptom of lazy plotting. With a nearly omnipotent agent, virtually anything can be accomplished, and any plot holes the writer puts him/herself in can be dodged. However, it also leads to many "why don't they" questions.

I can't recommend this book, unless you are a real ST novel completist. It's not bad, really, but there's not much to get excited about.

This book was written in the 1970s - and it's very...primitive. The Klingons are power-hungry bullies out for blood at any cost - this was really annoying. And Romulans with a strict code of honor? The two species seemed somewhat reversed. And the "guessing game" got real old, real fast. Also, there were many unnecessary, confusing scenes. For early Trek, it's okay, but it doesn't live up to current expectations.
