A must have for collectors of Antique English Silver
This book is a must have for anyone who collects antique English silver. Not as comprehensive as a lot of others I have seen which is actually a plus since it fits comfortably in your pocket when you go antiquing. I keep my copy next to my computer so I have it handy while surfing the silver listings on eBay. Well worth the price.

We need a reprint--BAD!
I know it's out of print, but I gotta recommend this book and its sequel PAY DIRT, collections of Gardner's classic "Bob Zane" stories for the old pulp mag ARGOSY, written in the early thirties. Until the reprint comes, you can usually find these books at your local public library (at least here in the Southwest.)

Gardner truly loved the deserts of Cal, Az and Nevada. His descriptions of them are the best and most evocative I have ever found-- and yes, I HAVE read Edward Abbey's silly, Macho/environmental anti-ranching mantras. Forget that self-important windbag and read these old pulp mysteries instead. I guarantee your time will be better spent!

Please: It's Fiction For Pete's Sake
Not to burst anyones bubble but this book is a novel... and while many maintain it's based on the author's TRUE experiences I'm here to tell you that the big climax, the birth of her son, is totally bogus.

1.] Martha MARTIN is the pen name of Helen MULLEN. Helen isn't even her real name as she chose to drop her given name of Orpha Myrtle. She was the first wife of my grandfather, Clyde L DeVOL. They were married 30 July 1914 in Pueblo Co CO and divorced 7 September 1925 in Cook Co IL. They had lived apart apart since 1918. Clyde came home on a "surprise" leave from the navy [WWI] and, as he put it, "found her in bed" with another man.

2.] Their son Clyde E. DeVOL was indeed born in a log cabin but it was hardly in the "wilds" of Alaska. He was born 23 May 1915 at his grandfather's summer cabin in Iron Co MO. This nearly 10 years before his mother ever set foot in Alaska.

A well written and gripping NOVEL, perhaps. Based on reality, hardly.

Amazing, Wonderful, Magnetic!
I just finished this book an hour ago and it is truely wonderful. I started it yesterday and stopped only to sleep and go to work. It is a truely captivating story. If you love the wilderness, strong women or tangible spirituality you can grab hold of...this is the book for you. I can't say I have enjoyed a book more in a very, very long time.

Best book I ever read!
I really have enjoyed this book. It is spell binding. Now I am reading her next book "Home in the Bear's Domain". I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

Avoid this book at all costs!!
This is undoubtably the worst text I have ever seen used at the freshman chem level. It is poorly organized, does not give the student a good grounding in the basics before moving on to more detailed areas and printed with ink and glossy paper that makes reading very difficult. The margins are cluttered with distracting diagrams, flow charts and pictures that have little relavance to what is being discussed in the text. As to organization, it is absurd to introduce thermodynamics in chapter 6, discussing only enthalpy, leaving out entropy and Gibbs free energy, placing them piecmeal in later chapters. This fragmented approach only confuses the student when they can't see the interrelationship between entropy, enthalpy and free energy. The same applies in discussing molarity at the end of chapter 3 instead of leaving it with acid-base and solution chemistry. The fragmented approach is very distracting for both student and instructor. This is my first and hopefully last semester to use this text. For a good text use McMurry-Fay or Davis, Whitten and Galey. Don't use this text if at all possible. I gave it one star because that was the lowest available.

a good general chemistry text for science majors
This is a very useful chemistry textbooks for a science student who studies independently. I like this book for several reasons: (1) It is comprehensive, (2) It contains detailed explanatins of WHY and HOW things happen,(3) The book includes numerous worked-out problems, and (4) The book is written in a very readable manner, containing straight-foward language and excellent graphic explanations. I am studying biochemistry now, and I go back to this text very often for the explanation of certain topics, eg. buffer problems. The coverage of organic chemistry is very basic in Silberberg's book. For in-depth coverage refer to Organic Chemistry: Structure and reactivity by Seyhan Ege (ISBN 0395902231), a very good book that emphasizes understanding, not memorization. A note: solutions to all problems in Ege's book are in the study guide.

The best science majors' chemistry book I've seen
While I would hesitate to recommend this to someone who had never taken high school chemistry, as a second year high school book and a science majors' level college text, this book is fantastic. Comparing it to an old version of Brady & Humiston, and Zumdahl's Introductory Chemistry, Silberberg wins hands down. Fantastic layout and detailed explanations of most topics. Not good for the most basic topics (don't even think about learning oxidation-reduction reaction balancing from this text).

The book that has not been delevered
I ordered this book last year. You are still promising delivery on December 3rd 2000. This appears to be the only way I can get to you. Where is the book?

You CAN get the... this book!
... It is a WONDERFUL book, full of very clear large photographs ("over 830 color photographs"). I bought this book in London and had to carry it home to the U.S. It is big and heavy, but it was worth it. If you appreciate the style of Liberty and Co., you need this book.

Synchronized swimming for Jessi???
Jessi thought her dreams came true when she gets the chance to swim with dance and no gym class. But synchronized swimming is harder than it looks and definately no ballet. Meanwhile the Sports Festival is coming and Jessi and her partner feel they are not ready to win, but the BSC have confidence in them. Will Jessi win the gode medal? I have to say, this is definately a different book from the others.
