Wonderful, sweet - one to remember
This sweet tale of a boy overcoming his fears has been a bedtime favorite of my boys for years. The easy flow of the text and interesting detail in the the illustrations makes it a pleasure for parents and kids alike. I'm ordering 2 hardbacks now to give my boys when they have kids.

The 9-Month How-To Book for Children
A playfully realistic story about a little girl who learns she is going to be a big sister. She hears her mommy get morning sickness, watches mom eat weird foods, watches daddy be nervous, and practices looking pregnant in the mirror. A handy little story to introduce a child who will be a big sister soon. The illustrations are charming, the text is simple to read for young readers, and the story is just the right length for before-bedtime reading.

What Can I Give Him
"What Can I Give Him" is a lovely treatment of the whimsical poem and Anglican hymn ("In the Bleak Midwinter") about Jesus' birth. Debi Gliori captures the universality of the message of God's visit by juxtaposing scenes from BC Bethlehem and from a "bleak midwinter" in modern Western Europe.

The child protagonist in this short drama concludes, as does the hymn, that the appropriate gift for an almighty savior is the one thing she has to give that he does not already own, "my heart."

A Determined Soccer Girl
The theme of the book seems to be that girls are better then boys in sports. This idea is repeated on almost every page, it gets kind of tiring. This book is for little girls who don't get the chance to play soccer. Dulcie shows girls can play also.

A funny tale of a girl using her own unique talents to score
This is a humerous story about a little girl who defies convention (and the negative criticisms of the boys around her) and plays soccor with the boys' team. Rather than conform, she follows in her mother's (motorcycle riding) footsteps by embracing her unique qualities, continuing to practice and not losing heart. When she is rejected by the boys soccor team as too small and too female, she does not give up, but instead keeps practicing and always carries her soccor cleats (just in case). In the end, at the big game she is the only player who is able to fit into a too-small boys uniform and saves the day by scoring the winning goal despite the fact that her shorts split when she shoots on goal. This book colorfully expresses the belief that successes in life do not come from being brilliant or being a particular gender, but from being in the right place at the right time, being prepared and having the guts to risk being different. This book is a favorite for my two nephews' (age 2 and 6) and their mom....

A few OK poems without a clear audience
I was looking for a book of poems that are fun to read and listen to. This isn't that book. The poetry isn't bad, but it's too complicated for children younger than about 6 and too boring for children older than about 7. There are wonderful poems that are fun to read and listen to. This collection doesn't have many of those. In fact, it doesn't have much poetry at all. This is not...[an inexpensive] book. It should be a nice fat book with hundreds of poems. It's not. I guess they spent all their money on color illustrations.

Refrigerator?
I took a look at this book this afternoon ... seems like living in a refrigerator is a bad thing to suggest to wee ones as a possibility. "Just climb on in and close the door ..."
