This book is a collection of almost all of the Myth related texts from Ugarit (now Ras Shamrah, Syria. The bulk of the text are direct translations of those works, presented in parallel with transliterations of the Ugaritic. Gibsion gives a brief introduction which recounts the tablets' discovery, summarizes each myth, and presents an interpretation. Footnotes are copious throughout. Also included are more recent transliterated, but untranslated texts, an Ugaritic-English Glossary, a table of Biblical references, and an extensive bibliography. This is the most thorough and most up-to-date telling of the Ugaritic myth cycle I have seen.

This is a humorous story from the point of view of Hank, the Cowdog, detective and protector of all within his territory. He takes the weight of the ranch on his shoulders trying to save the chickens from being murdered by coyotes. He is mistaken, misunderstood and maligned until he finally joins the enemy.

Children with the Cinderella-syndrome may relate to Hank as he complains of how nobody appreciates him and how they will not be able to get along without him once he runs away. Relationships between Hank and the farm cat, other dogs, and his owners are well-developed and entertaining.

This book should be required reading for every "would-be" missionary AND for anyone who thinks they have personal problems dealing with the "heathen" in today's world. John Paton's written experiences brought tears to my eyes and a wonderful glorious inspiration to my soul as I read of his trials and tribulations in the New Hebrides. I was rewarded by the true testimonies of the ones whose lives and souls he saved. This could be a life-changing book and in many ways it has been for me, personally. Renew your Faith in God and the power of the Word by spending several hours with the conversion efforts of John Paton in the South Pacific. You will be blessed for it, I promise!

I have read many commentaries and Barclay and John MacArthur are the best in my opinion. Barclay is the easiest to read. He aims at the people to which it is written, the culture in which it is written and the language at the time. Barclay is the most quoted in terms of history. Very, very interesting reading.

I've been a linguist/translator for over 20 years (English is my native language). I've used literally hundreds of reference books in my life, and for the average user (H.S. and college students, parents helping kids with homework, people proofreading their own or colleaques' work...) I would rank this as one of the two best English grammar books I have ever encountered. It is well organized, so it is easy to find the right section. It is clearly written, so you don't have to decipher the text. It indicates whether particular items are required by grammar rules, or merely prefered, so you don't have to wonder if something could be phrased differently if you want to. I give it my highest recommendation!

Unspoiled Maine is criss-crossed with pretty roads that traverse some of the handsomest scenery in the Northeast. This book directs the traveler to the best routes with full descriptions along the way. Nothing quite like it, and you'll never wind up on some congested superhighway! Recommended for those who like to explore off the beaten track.

This is the first volume in the 9 volume sweeping family saga, and it sets the high watermark. In many ways I think it is the best, most especially the final chapter, when one era segues into the next, as generational change occurs.

It is probably a particular type of reader who enjoys fiction which examines the drawing room manners and social mores of upper middle class England (the professional class, as opposed to manufacturing/merchant class or aristocracy). I love it, especially when it is delivered with an archly raised eyebrow which questions the assumptions and mores, the hypocrisies of the time. All the better if it can lead you to question the same characteristics of your own time. That is achieved in Galsworthy, in much the same way as Trollope achieved in his Barchester Chronicles in an earlier era.

The writing is not without humour, mostly of an ironic kind. The older generation Forsytes, steadfast in their belief in themselves find it almost inconceivable when one amongst their number has the termerity to die!

Anyone who thrives on a diet of Trollope, Thackeray, Austen, and anyone who has enjoyed Ian McEwan's more contemporary novel, Atonement should enjoy this. Lovers of the British TV 'costume drama' - think The Cazalets, Love In A Cold Climate, The Way We Live Now - for example, should likewise consider reading Galsworthy.

Walter Riggans does a fantasic job of blending facts and insightfulness. I've tried several commentaries on Numbers and this one was absolutely wonderful.

This commentary covers the last 7 of the minor prophets. It and its companion volume 1 (on the first 5 minor prophets) are a splendid help for anyone who wants to read these prophets as God's word for us. Craigie gives us the historical background for the books and relates them to our lives today. The commentary is full of pithy observations worth remembering. These volumes are more interestingly written and useful than several of the other volumes of the Old Testament Daily Study Bible that I have used.

Outdoor types will love this guide to walking America's most dramatic coast, from southern Maine to the Canadian border. Different walks in many localities and lots of how-to-get-there information and concise trail descriptions get you started and home again safely. Highly recommended.
