Lovely story
I wanted to teach the German tradition of St. Nicklaus Abend to my daughter's 1st grade class and used this book. It may not give the historical account of St. Nicklaus, but it tells of how 2 children make a wish on St. Nicklaus eve and it is heard by St. Nicklaus. The author tells the story so that young children can understand that there is more to just giving a gift. The illustrations are beautiful and were admired by the whole class. I also read the book to my 3 year-old daughter's pre-school class and they marvelled at the pictures. An excellent book to add to a child's library.

Welcome reprint of a classic
Barnard's classic, now back in print, is not only a decorating book, but also an encyclopedia of ethnic textiles, their history, and their care. Every page is filled with gorgeous color photographs of the use of textiles in settings from the American southwest (Navaho blankets) to London (Middle Eastern Kilims) to Paris (African Kuba cloth). Items from hats (Afghani) to huipils (Guatamala) are shown framed, used as furniture coverings, made into pillows, or just hung imaginativly on a wall. I am delighted to find it back in print in a soft cover version. Each time I've loaned out my precious hardbound copy (and then only to special people), I have made SURE I got it back. A must-have for anyone who loves textiles, and at a ridiculously low price given the size of the volume and its plentiful illustrations.

A remarkable overview of the mammals
Mammalian diversity - and the remarkable adaptations of living and fossil mammals - are the topic of this updated version of the standard text on mammalian biology. New figures and a completely updated systematic treatment characterize this volume, which should become the standard for professionals and the general public interested in the biology of mammals.

The Postilla of Nicholas of Lyra on the Song of Songs (Reformation Texts With Translation (1350-1650). Biblical Studies, V. 4)

Authors: Nicholas, Nicholas of Lyra, and James G. Kiecker

A classic of biblical interpretation
Nicholas of Lyra (fourteenth century) was a seminal figure inthe development of Biblical criticism. His commentaries were thefirst to be published and represent a transition towards a more critical approach to biblical study. In particular, his knowledge of Hebrew and Hebrew commentators may be seen as an indication of this. They were also highly influential in the development of Luther's thought. In this study of the Old Testmanent book known as the Song of Songs, Lyra follows the classic Rabbinic commentator Rashi, in approach, albeit with a marked Christian emphasis in some details, particularly in the latter chapters. Lyra reads the Song allegorically, as describing poetically the history of up to and including the foundation of Christianity and its acceptance by Constantine. The Church is seen, then, as a continuation of the Israel of the Old Testament. Although modern commentators eschew allegory as a method of interpretation, Lyra's historical significance can not be discounted, especially in his knowledge of and openness to Jewish writers. This book contains the original latin text and an accurate translation of it into English. There is also a useful introduction outlining the context and significance of de Lyra's work. At just under 130 pages, this is a succint commentary, covering the whole Song, well paced, without unnecessary detours away from the text of the Song of Songs. Those who read latin will find in Lyra a capable and appealing writer, at least in comparison to his fellow biblical commentators. This book is part of a series (Reformation Texts with Translation), which although in early stages of development, on the strength of this work, appears promising. As someone who has read a lot of commentaries on the Song of Songs, this is certainly one of the best.

Invaluable Insight
This book provides a wealth of information on this under-researched field, including both the accounts of those with visibly difference and research information. I study patients with spinal deformity and I found the research background to this area particularly useful. I thoroughly recommend this title.

This deserves to be called a "World's Classic"
Boswell was not the obvious choice to write the best biography about Samuel Johnson, much less one of the greatest biographies in world literature. He had much less contact with Johnson than Mrs. Thrale, for many years a close friend of Johnson who spent much more time with him than did Boswell. In fact, Boswell spent perhaps 400 days with Johnson over a period of many years. He also was not Johnson's literary executor. Finally, Boswell was regarded by many of his day, and afterwards, as something of an 18th Century celebrity hound. He made a point of meeting every famous person he could (Voltaire, Rousseau), and went to great efforts to make himself famous. Nevertheless, in his Life of Johnson, Boswell succeeded in portraying Johnson and his circle so vividly that more than 200 years later they come across as real human beings. He did this by breaking the convention of concentrating only on the most favorable aspects of his subject's life, and instead describing Johnson's eccentricities of dress, behavior, etc. Moreover, Boswell did not neglect to include incidents that make himself appear ridiculous. The book is both extremely funny and moving. If you read this, you will want to immediatley get a copy of Boswell's book on the trip that Johnson and he took to the Hebrides.

The Biography
Surely this is "The Biography" in the same sense that to the Scholastic thinkers, Aristotle was "The Philosopher."

More to the point, it is an endlessly fascinating book, one of those rare works that can be opened at random with consistently rewarding results. Johnson, of course, is one of those rare characters who demonstrates that life is not necessarily less rich than fiction, and Boswell is an entertaining (and amusingly exasperating) chronicler. The "Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides" is also well worth reading and randomly revisiting.

However, I'm somewhat alarmed by the comments below about the accuracy of this version. I bought this because it was a decent-looking hardback version--I had actually read a library copy (some long out-of-print edition). Could some reviewer please explain the deviations? My skimming and minor re-reading hasn't revealed anything glaring yet, but it's been a while since my original reading, and I haven't sat down for a long Boswell read in a few years.

Great Book (Bad Edition)
Needless to say, Boswell's LIFE OF JOHNSON is one of the preeminent works of biography and should be read by anyone interested in Johnson or the genre. It is a great book (also great is W. Jackson Bate's SAMUEL JOHNSON [1st published 1975]which is a MUST for anyone interested in Johnson). But although I love the Everyman's Library, I do not recommend this edition of Boswell. Unlike the usual quality of the Everyman's Library, its Boswell is rife with typographical errors (there's even missing text!). Though it's the only edition of Boswell I've read, I regret that a correct edition is not on my bookshelf. That being said, if this is the only affordable hardcover version you can find -- and you buy only hardcovers -- go ahead and purchase the Everyman's despite the numerous and distracting errors.

Not just for Strong Willed children
There is sound advice in this book which would be helpful to any parent. It is mainly written for dealing with the challenging ages of 2 to 6 year olds, and advocates a step by step approach over a period of 5 weeks. You are encouraged to learn a new parenting skill each week which is further broken down into a day by day schedule. This regimented and convoluted approach did not appeal to me, although I strongly agree with the principles and methods.
This book addresses the important issue of negative reinforcement which is so prevalent with strong willed children. For a more detailed insight I would highly recommend the book, "The Manipulative Child: How to Raise Resilient, Resourceful, and Independent Kids".

The second half of the book gives excellent advice and examples on how to apply the techniques. Although I did not agree with the one size fits all approach, I do recommend reading the book as it does offer much authorative advice. Other books I feel are very helpful are "Ain't Misbehavin", "Setting Limits", and "How to talk so your kids will listen and listen so your kids will talk".

A wonderful resource for parents
I am a child clinical psychologist and I specialize in the prevention and treatment of behavior problems in young children. Despite what the title, implies, this book is useful for a wide variety of children. Afterall, what preschool-aged child is without more than a few strong-willed moments?

I particularly like this book as a companion to Gottman's "Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child." The strengths of these books, both written by leaders in parenting and child research, really complement one another.

Exactly what I was looking for!
If you wished your child came with a set of instructions, this book is it! The foundation of this book is what many of us feel in our hearts but don't know how to achieve: discipline from a positive perspective and rule out the shouting and spanking. This book should be mandatory reading for every parent leaving the maternity ward. It is not just for strong-willed children. The 5-step program is easily attainable for anyone committed to a better relationship with their child/children. Having read a half-dozen books related to boys and difficult behaviors in a search for answers, I guarantee this book is the best.
