One of the best in the Curious George series.
In this story George and his friend visit the zoo to see a new exhibit. George witnesses a zoo keeper feeding the seals and decides it would be fun to share his snack with the other animals. Because George can't read the signs by the animal cages he doesn't know that you should not feed the animals. After giving the zoo keepers a merry chase he is caught and told that feeding the animals things they shouldn't eat can make them sick. George feels bad and makes up for it by helping the zoo keepers with the new exhibit. Excellent story and introduces a number of different animals for children to identify.

All six of my children have loved Curious George books and I have to read them to them until they have memorized them. In this book George get in to mischief as usual but all ends up well in the end, of course.

How a Movie Works.
Even though this wasn't one of the original titles in the CURIOUS GEORGE series and was written and illustrated by some unknown writers and artists in an attempt to cash in on CURIOUS GEORGE, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. I picked it up because I'm a huge movie buff and will read just about anything about the movies. I was especially impressed by how much the illustrations resemble the original drawings.

In this story the Man in the Yellow Hat takes George to see a movie. George is curious about the light in a little window high above the ground. So, while the Man in the Yellow Hat is getting snacks, George finds his way into the machine booth and causes a mess.

Children love this story because it combines the misadventures of George with something they are familiar with, movies. A delightful book.

George uses all his talents!
This is one of my daughter's favorite CG books and one that Ican deal with reading more often. George uses both his legs and armsto flip pancakes faster than the chef can do it. I liked the positive focus on George's (and kid's) skills. It leaves the reader with a nice sense of accomplishment. END

George Nowlan: Maritime Conservative in National Politics
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Toronto Pr (1986)
Author: Margaret Conrad
Amazon base price: $37.50
Used price: $14.00
Average review score:

I understand how Nowlan held office for forty years.
Conrad's book is not a political biography, but a history of politics in Nova Scotia and Canada. Accordingly one can learn about more than the life of George Nowlan, federal finance minister and long time member of parliament from the Annapolis Valley. Nowlan's son also represented the Nova Scotia riding but without his father's success or longevity. The details of local organization and party machinery are as interesting and revealing as the larger picture of Nowlan's part in national politics. Political history is shown to be a result and part of the social context.

not your average romance novel!
A refreshing read. The books in this series are about angels sent down to help innocent people. The one thing they don't count on is falling in love along the way. I think anyone who believes in angels or wants to belive in them will really enjoy this book.

The shape of love in two cultures
Two women, Ivy from India and Margaret from England meet atchurch in the US. They become the closest of friends, and laterregular correspondents. Their exploration of the meaning of love as it plays out in their lives will resonate in the minds of many women. What of fantasies influenced by romance novels? Can one love the person chosen by others in an arranged marriage? Will love overcome culture? What's wrong with being single? The women are not lesbians, nor is there any heavy breathing. Just good, decent, highly-educated women who want fulfilling lives.

Frustratingly brief presentation
While the book presents numerous types of agricultural buildings from all over the U.S., it doesn't go into any sort of detail about any of them, making it of limited reference use.

Fantastic Book on Barns!
For what I wanted the book for it is a fantastic resourse. I build model barns and covered bridges. This book has not only given me new ideas but also a history behind them. Love the book.

Mary, Called Magdalene
Published in Audio Cassette by Chivers Sound Library (2002)
Authors: Margaret George and Melissa Hughes
Amazon base price: $139.95
Average review score:

Disappointing, I hoped for better!
I came to "Mary Called Magdalene" searching for something as spiritually fulfilling and female-oriented as "The Red Tent", and was sadly disappointed. We need more women's perspectives from and about the Bible, but this one just didn't ring true!

It's an "okay" read (I did *finish* it, anyway), but the story is slow and the characters (especially Magdalene herself!) are flat. I've researched Magdalene extensively, and find her to be a fascinating and much-maligned historical character, with a strong spirit that has lasted even through all of the mud-slinging. (The "prostitute" nonsense seems to have been started long after her death, by churchmen who were annoyed by her position as "favored apostle," more than anything else.)

I was hoping to find an insightful (maybe even feminist) reading of the historical Magdalene, and instead received a rather bland and culturally-appropriate version of a (rather boring) Biblical housewife. If you're looking for a powerful historical novel on Biblical characters, I highly recommend Anita Dymant's "The Red Tent," or for younger readers, Madeleine L'Engle's "Many Waters." Leave poor Mary Magdelene in peace-- this book doesn't do her justice.

very moving account about a misunderstood person
This book was very compelling. The story of Mary of Magdela was moving. I always thought that Mary was a reformed prostitute, but the way she was portrayed made her a very likeable person. I love the way she intertwined her life with Jesus. Sure, I know the biblical story about Jesus but Ms. George put it in a way that left me very sad and understanding for maybe the first time the scope of what happened to Jesus and the pain of the people that he left behind, the confusion and the wonder of what was going to happen now. Sure reading this centuries later it could be "so what another biblical story" but for me to see it from the eyes of Mary and to read her story, I was enthralled. My advice is don't compare this to Ms. George's other books. This is truly a unique read.

An absolutely gorgeous book!
"Mary, Called Magdalene" is an amazing novel about the life of Mary Magdalene. It starts out when Mary is seven. She and her family go on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Mary, her couisins and friend Keziah meet Jesus (who is thirteen at the time)and his family from Nazareth.

The story picks up later when Mary is ready to be married. She ends up marrying Joel, a young man who works for her father. Mary, however, becomes possessed with demons from an ivory idol that she found years ago. The family tries all they can to exorcise the demons but nothing works.

Eventually, Mary goes to a rabbi who tells her to fast in the desert. She does this but eventually becomes so exhausted that she has to find her way back to civilization, still possessed with demons. She stops and sees John the Baptist preaching by the River Jordan. She meets Jesus for the second time here and he gets rid of the demons.

Mary becomes one of his closest disciples and follows him until his death and resurrection. Then she goes on preaching to people until she dies.

There is a lot of intrigue and even some romance in this book. It is gem in my opinion. Apart from being a great read it also gives some insight into what the Jewish and Christian were like. It's interesting to see how the early Christian rituals presented in this book are so similar to those of today. You should definitely read this book no matter what religion you are. It's wonderful and well worth reading it.
