very appealing and informative
Jean Craighead George is a beloved children's author of nature stories. I loved her My Side of the Mountain when I was young, my daughter adored Julie of the Wolves, and now my young son enjoyed this story of a young rhino. Not only does George manage to convey a lot of information about animal behavior in this entertaining story, but she is a master of the telling detail that shows she has really taken a close and loving look at rhinos. The illustrations are superb.

A lovely picture book from the author of JULIE OF THE WOLVES
Jean Craighead George combines her love of Eskimo culture and wildlife in this splendid picture book. The story is of a young Eskimo girl named Bessie who, while out exploring one Arctic evening, meets a polar bear cub named Snow Bear. The two immediately become the best of friends, while Bessie's brother and Snow Bear's mother watch over them like the good caretakers they are. The story wonderfully shows how animal life often reflects the ways of humans--close family bonds, playfulness, and a sense of happiness abound between both species. Wendell Minor's spectacular illustrations light up every page. They are filled with warmth, humor, and excitement, and are breathtakingly beautiful. The quiet elegance of Eskimo life and the powerful magnificence of the polar bear are gloriously depicted. Other George/Minor picture books include the remarkable ARCTIC SON, the story of Ms. George's grandson who lives at the top of the world. More ice, Eskimos, and polar bears can be seen in this radiant story. MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT tells the story of many different animals all over the United States and what they do during the transition from sunrise to sunset. Mr. Minor's illustrations are cozy and cheerful. EVERGLADES is another example of the excellent combination of Ms. George's poetic style and Mr.Minor's lush watercolors. It tells the story of the rise and near-fall of one of the world's greatest and most unique ecosystems, the Florida Everglades. Mr. Minor also did the art for the covers and some of the illustrations for Ms. George's spectacular JULIE OF THE WOLVES books. The fourth in the series, not a chapter book but a picture book entitled NUTIK THE WOLF PUP, is written with the same close view into the relationship between humans and animals as SNOW BEAR, but Mr. Minor did not do the illustrations for this book. Jean Craighead George, author of more than eighty books for children and young adults, will surely inspire and warm the hearts of her audiences with SNOW BEAR.

Forever my favorite...
This is more a beautiful poem than a story book. With it's short and sweet wording you feel like you can hear the sounds, feel the breeze, and smell the scents surrounding the waterfall as if you are there. And with the beautiful full page illustrations, you are there! What serenity! I highly recommend this book and not only for children.

An engaging story from the author of JULIE OF THE WOLVES
That master of accurate wolf storytelling, Jean Craighead George, has presented a fine picture book. Sadly, it is out-of-print, and I have to read it by checking it out from my local library. The story concerns a young wolf named Roko, who is injured during his pack's hunt and is left, helpless and dying, on an Alaskan ridge. Many Arctic animals come wanting to feast on Roko's remains when he is dead--an arctic fox, a snowy owl, a bear, ravens--thus, children not only learn about the many species of animal life in this seemingly barren, desolate land, but they also learn about ecology, how everything is connected in the natural world, and how death can really be a part of life. The ending shows how loyal wolves are to one another, when Roko's leader helps him to survive. The black and white ink drawings are nothing spectacular, but they do excellently accent the simplicity and poetry of Ms. George's words.

Frightful's Mountain
The main character, in this book is a Peregrine Falcon named Frightful. Frightful is taken from her nest to a tree cottage in dheli, owned by Sam Gribley. Frightful was raised in captivity. When Sam let Frightful go, Frightful faced many problems in the real world! Frightful's goal was to migrate south without getting lost, she accomplished her goal by following a group of Falcons south. One of the problems Frightful overcame was when she flew into two utility wires and fell to the ground with her wing almost burnt!
I like the authors writing style because she puts the story in Frightful's point of view. She is also a wonderful author because she makes the book enjoyable for everybody to read. She makes the story come alive. When the story starts it is a little boring but as the story goes on the energy builds up and she puts hints and clues in the story.

After being set free by Sam becuase he couldn't keep an endangered speices, Frightful had many adventures. This book tells how it would be if you saw the world through Frightful's eyes. A must for nature lovers.
I liked this book a lot. In order to like it you have got to read My Side of the Mountain and then On the Far Side of the Mountain. BOOK REPORT
In my personal view I thought this was a pretty good book. Ialso read the the first one(MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN)last year. Ithought it was better then the sequel. This book had a lot ofinformation on the wilderness in it. If I ever got stuck in the woods I would think back to when I read these two fine books. It gave you instruction on how to make a sling to hunt for food with. The book also gave information on how to make traps to [catch] various animals. I thought it was interesting when it talked about falconry and gave you descriptions of plants you could eat and couldnt eat. There were times during this book where I couldnt put it down. there were also times in the book where I wanted to put it down. The book was about a boy named Sam who lives in the mountains with his sister Alice and of course his Perigrene falcon named frightful. When Sam was outside a conservation officer came and took frightful because Perigrene Falcons are almost extinct. He is devasted. Frightful is the one who caught almost all of his food. Later in the day he thinks his sister ran away. That day was not his day. ...While trying to find Alice he is also trying to get Frightful back at the same time. There are all types of adventures in the book while trying to find Frightful and Alice you will have to read the book to find out the ending. If you read My Side of the Mountain and Hatchet you will love this book.

The Far Side of the Mountain
Sam Gribley is a teenager who loves nature and the adventures of living in the wilderness. he ran away from home to live in the Catskill Mountains, which he loves. About two years later his sister Alice comes to visit him and she decides to stay with him because she likes the mountains. Sam lives in a tree house. He has a falcon named Frightful.
They are living their life great until one day Frightful was confiscated or taken way because he was an endangered animal. Sam depended on Frightfull for and comfort. Also, Alice runs away. Sam gets worried so his friend Banbo and him search for her.
This is a great book if you are looking for an exciting book about the wilderness. I liked it because each ending of a chapter left me hanging and the chapters were all exciting. You should read The Far Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighhead George.

Another unforgettable read from a master of nature lore
I was surprised at the number of reviews there were for this book. I have reviewed many more of Ms. George's books on Amazon. While this is not quite up to level of her other books for children, it's still interesting, as all of Ms. George's nature stories are. Jean Craighead George is the author of the Julie books and HOW TO TALK TO YOUR DOG and HOW TO TALK TO YOUR CAT. In all of these she goes into great detail about animal communications, as she does in this fascinating look into the world of crows. People who enjoy this will probably like Ms. George's autobiographical account of THE TARANTULA IN MY PURSE AND 172 OTHER WILD PETS. Throughout her life, Ms. George owned a number of crows among other wild animals, and many details, from how the crow learns to mimic English to playing on a sliding board, leap out of real life onto the pages of the book. Some nature lovers may be disappointed at the lack of descriptive outdoor life, as the plot relies heavily on human activity. But the book--entertaining, jolting, with a thought-provoking and startling ending--is altogether a fine read.

This book was great!!!!!!!!!!
I recomend this for people who like a combination of sadness and houmer this crow has a strange warning cry. I think you will like some stuff the crow says. If you want to know I think the crows name is Neenah Tarince.

The cry of the crow
The cry of the crow is a great book when you are looking for good education and alot about crows and there habits. Every day Mandy has to wake up to dieing crows and she feeds nina terrance a baby crow she found in the forestone day. I would really hope you would like the book.

Will Sam Survive?
I liked this book because I didn't know what was going to happen next. The book told me about the dangers in the Catskill Mountains. My Side of the Mountain is a great book even if the reader is a little confused at first. This book is about a boy named Sam Gribley who runs away to his Grandfather's old farm in the Catskill Mountains from an overcrowded apartment in New York City. He is tired of the city life and wants to find a new way to live. Taking with him a penknife, and a hatchet, he sets of into the Catskills. There Sam lives in a burnt out hollowed tree, eats deer, crayfish, and rabbit. He meets many people that help him survive in the mountains. He makes many human friends and animal friends as well. But then he must survive a harsh winter in the Catskills. Will Sam survive? To find out read the book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.

MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN
My side of the Mountain was very interesting, and it kept my attention until the end. This book was interesting because everything seemed real. It didn`t dragg on and on and went right to the story. I do think that the boy in the story was a lot older than you would think he was.
The book is about a boy named Sam Gribley that is terribly unhappy and living in New York City with his family. He runs away to the Catskilled Moutains to live by himself with only a penknife, a ball of cord, forty dollars, flint and steel which he plans to use to help him survive. Sam learns about courage, danger, and independence during his year in the wilderness; a year that changes his life forever.
This book is good and if you like adventures this is the book for you. This book has also won the Newbery Honor Award. This book is a classic story of wilderness survival. It also should appeal to all rugged individualists who dream of escaping to the forest. (great book)

One of the best books I've Read This Year
This book, My Side of the Mountain, by Jean Craighead George is a great book. The main character, Sam Gribley, runs away from his New York City apartment one day to seek a new and independent life. Sam chooses to live in the Catskill Mountain because his Grandfather once owned a farm there. While Sam is there, he meets many friends. Some of his new friends are people, and some are animals. Sam's best friend and helper is a falcon he calls Frightful. Sam also shows lots of courage and tolerance in this book. Sam was very courageous during the blizzard that hit the mountain. Sam shows tolerance because he eats things he's never eaten before such as rabbit, crayfish, and vension. This is a great book and anyone who likes adventure should read it.

So he goes out to kill them but instead ends up saving one. his dad says he's going to kill the owl but gets to attached to it. Thus begans vthe stor of Bardy the owl.

One of the best books I ever read!
This book is about a boy, his father, and a spotted owl. The boy, Borden, hates spotted owls. They made his dad lose a job at a logging company. But one day, he finds a lost, hungry little owlet, and, thinking it's a barred owl, takes him home and gets him healthy again. It isn't until the owl gets totally hooked on them that they find out what kind of owl he is. Can Borden pick up enough courage to tell his dad that the barred owl he has learned to love is really a spotted owl, the kind he hates? If you want to learn more about owls in a fun story, read this book, "There's an Owl in the Shower." I tell you, you're gonna love it!
