Wonderful and spiritually uplifting book
I loved "For the Love of God" and, as the title claims, it is a "handbook for the Spirit". The essays range from Mother Teresa to the Dalai Lama, so as credentials go, it doesn't get better. This book works on the level of poetry - food for the soul. The only comparable book I can think of that achieves this same level of impact, is the divine and truly inspired "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard G. Patton. The accumulated wisdom that is in "For the Love of God" becomes manifest in the profoundly moving "The Autobiography.." and for the first time I can believe Jesus as being a REAL human being. Either I am getting older or the authors of today are getting better at portaying our aspirations towards God. - I hope it's just them getting better. This is an excellent book, go for it!

A great book to go to in times of need
I bought this book for two reasons: first, I was going through a phase where I was feeling somewhat lost spiritually and was looking for a little guidance, and second, because the list of contributors spanned the spectrum of religious thought, and I wondered if they would have anything common to say.

It turned out to be a great buy. The thinkers - ranging from the Dalai Lama to Mother Teresa to Rabbi Harold Kushner - write about their personal spirituality, not only about what is important to them, but also how they cultivate spirituality in everyday life. And if you look carefully, there is a surprisingly strong common thread running through these essays.

This book has been on my bedside table. I come back to it at times when I feel I need some inspiration and guidance, and pick a piece to read - any one. Each time I have done this, I have felt more connected to the Divine and to the world around me.

Out of the Abyss
This book was the key I had been looking for in reaching a mid-40's spiritual plateau. It is a book of answers and methods. From things as simple as focussing on the thoughts "In" and "Out" while breathing during meditation to the conflict between egoism and spiritualism. It is the kind of book one will keep on hand in times of crises to read over again. The format of brief 4-5 page essays is perfect for those with short attention spans.

Buy it! Now!
This book has literally changed my life. I was looking for something new at my bookstore, and saw this book. I didn't believe what it said on the back cover, but I bought it anyway. I read it in two days, tried the techniques... and you won't believe it, but from that time on, everything I want comes true! It's simply magic! Simple, but extremely effective. If you want to change your life, buy this book TODAY!

Get a life...the one you really want
I first read this book in 1990. It changed my life. Since then, I've given it to at least ten other people along with the workbook. Although I still have my raggedy, dog eared, coffee stained, back cover missing, first copy, I've purchased back up copies for myself. I have re-read some sections many times.

I stumbled upon my treasure map and workbook in the basement several years after the first reading. To my amazement, I had accomplished the majority of the goals I'd set. Most of the ones I had not met had lost their appeal by then, or were no longer relevant.

Since practicing Shakti's visualization methods for the last 12 years, I increased my salary three-fold, well into six figures in the last nine years, we're practically debt-free, I've lost weight, and my relationship with my husband has completely and positively altered.

I was laid off in a downsizing recently, and you know what, based on what I know to be true, "This or something better for the higher good of all" is in store for me. I see it as an opportunity for more growth!

This book is not rocket science. Its simplicity is beautiful, but like most transformational work, it only works if you work it

Rock on Shakti!!

A classic book on creating your life as you desire it to be
Shakti Gawain's classic work, CREATIVE VISUALIZATION, truly stands the test of time. Although I read it for the first time in April 2001 (the original 1978 first edition version), I was thoroughly impressed with the way Gawain can write such a practical guide to the process of how we create our lives from our thoughts and feelings.

Gawain includes many exercises which help readers learn how to relax, how to visualize, contact their higher selves, program prosperity, heal themselves and others, meditate, and state meaningful affirmations. I especially enjoyed her "pink bubble" manifestation meditation for bringing what you most desire to you.

I feel very at home with the exercises and techniques outlined in CREATIVE VISUALIZATION, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in transforming their life for the better.

Autobiography sheds light on the real person
I have almost finished this book and have really enjoyed it. I am a bit disappointed with the quality of the writing, its pretty basic, but the content is very interesting. Shakti Gawain has led a very rich life, one that I relate to in many ways. She has participated in all kinds of spiritual/conciousness-raising practices and discusses many of them here. Her extensive trvaels are fun to read about, too. If you have read any of her other books and are curious about her personal experiences, read this.

Packed with Practical Advice and Wisdom.
Shakti Gawain's intensity of feeling and commitment to truth made me feel as if I'd known her all my life. We were drawn to the same workshops and books and I identified with her experiences both as a child and as an adult.
"Return to the Garden" is packed with practical advice and wisdom. I particularly enjoyed Gawain's insight about our need to make a commitment to our own healing and to the healing of the planet.
The sharing of her life story enables us to learn about different paths and techniques to self healing-discovering our shadow parts and our disowned energies and how to deal with the Earth's light and dark forces.
Gowain is able to explain complex psychological concepts in simple terms- issues such as projection, transference, counter transference, subpersonalities, aware ego, and the difference between consciousness and spirituality.
Gowain's description of channeling a universal power is both validating and helpful.

Wonderful, life changing book
I'd give it a five except that it has a bad way of wording things somethimes...but anyway, I've read Creative Visualization, and I didn't think she could top this book...well I stand corrected....if there was only one book in the world that I could buy for every person, this would be it! It deals with surrender to the universe and becoming a channel for it's energy.

Motivational/Inspirational/WONDERFUL book!!!
I have read Shakti's "Creative Visualization" and "Living in the Light". Both were fantastic works of art that reinforced my life long thoughts that we all create our own future. Her books have helped inspire me to write my own book on self development and begin seminars to help assist others to create the beautiful heaven on earth we can all have if we only dare to follow our intuition and dreams!!!

Life changing wisdom!
I consider my self a serious student of life, always out of deep curiosity and many times out of a need to survive. I started thirty years ago talking to the best therepists and my wisest friends to find my way to good health and happiness. The process included writing down dreams as well as making time to think and talk about the messages my unconsious was sending me. Getting regular exersize, eating right, and maintaining friendships were the rest of the formula.

Along the way I have read a number of books to guide me. "Living in the light" is, by far, the best book I've found on the subject. It is filled with insight and wisdom and is written in a clear, simple style that makes it easy to read in a couple of evenings. The author's instructions on how to tap your intuitive skills and the energy of the universe are powerful and breathtaking. Short chapters on the male and female aspects in all of us could help save a marriage. A must read for all students of life.

Creating True Prosperity

Ho-Hum, More of the Same
The "CREATING TRUE PROSPERITY" audio cassette by Shakti Gawain excerpts the essential ideas presented in her prosperity workshop and her book of the same title. The key word here is "true." On Side One, Gawain discusses what true prosperity is. Is prosperity having plenty of money? If so, then how much is plenty? For most of us, it is a case of not experiencing prosperity no matter how much money we have. Why? Generally, the more money we have, the more responsibility we acquire in the process. Also, our expenses usually increase proportionately as our income increases. Actually, Gawain points out, true prosperity has little to do with money. Prosperity is having plenty of what we truly need and want in life. Therefore, her first recommendation is to discover just exactly what it is that we need and want. With that done, the next thing that we require according to Gawain is the ability to bring these things into our lives. Her final recommendation is to enjoy and appreciate what we already have.

Gawain's key point seems to be that prosperity is related to but not caused by money, which is only the means not the end. So then, just what is the relationship between money and prosperity? Gawain suggests, there are three approaches to this relationship. The material approach is a purely external one while the spiritual approach is an internal one. The third approach, which Gawain calls the "New Age" approach, is based on consciousness. We manifest externally what we feel and think internally. While Gawain considers this last approach more realistic than the material or the spiritual, she feels that all three are too simplistic and limiting and offers a fourth approach This one draws on the other three but goes beyond them. It focuses on money as a mirror of prosperity. One could label this the "energy" approach, in which money, like health, career or relationships, represents an aspect of one's life that mirrors how well one's energy is circulating in that particular area. For example, if you are having chronic financial difficulties, you may want to examine your feelings toward power or unworthiness. Gawain then shares a seven-step process to enhance our prosperity: gratitutde, awareness, healing, following your truth, creating a vision, setting goals and sharing our gifts

On Side Two, Gawain presents two meditations. The first one is a meditation on gratitude whereby we come to realize and express our appreciation for what we already have. The second one is a meditation on discovering what it is that we need and want in our lives. For anyone familiar with Gawain's other audio cassettes or books, these two meditations are standard fare. If you have not been exposed to any of Gawain's material before, you may find them interesting.

An Illusion of Prosperity
Sometimes getting ahead in life is a little bit more than just how much money you can make. Creating True Prosperity is a careful blend of being balanced in one's life and truly experiencing happiness. In this book a philosophy is revealed that helps you gauge and understand why you may not be truly happy even if you currently are earning a decent income. Shakti strikes out and rattles a persons fundamental values and shows us how society has created its own self delusional citizens. She has a very pleasant way of writing that is easy to follow and extremely logical. This is simply another must read for anyone concerned with their personal improvement and betterment of their soul.

Creating True Prosperity
Shakti Gawain is well-known as an expert in personal growth and consciousness. She's written numerous book and leads workshops internationally. Her latest book, Creating True Prosperity, teaches that the way to happiness is not necessarily the accumulation of wealth.

Gawain defines prosperity as "the experience of having plenty of what we truly need and want in life, material and otherwise." She adds that "the key point to understand is that prosperity is an internal experience, not an external state, and it is an experience that is not tied to money." This is one reason why many people find themselves unhappy, despite the fact that they have more than enough money to cover their needs.

This does not mean that money is unimportant, and a certain amount of it is obviously needed to meet basic survival needs. The difficulty for many people comes from how they think about money. Gawain says that "essentially, money is a symbol for energy." We use our energy in a certain way--work--and receive money in exchange. We can then exchange our money for something created by someone else's energy. This defines money as a flow of energy and "our financial affairs tend to reflect how our life energy is moving."

Prosperity eludes many of us for a variety of reasons. Gawain provides some exercises for understanding personal patterns and overcoming habits and thought processes that keep individuals from achieving their prosperity goals. From this, she gets into a discussion of polarities and how most of us feel that we must always choose between opposites, with neither choice providing happiness. She details six steps that help individuals to balance their own inner polarities.

Gawain then answers common questions that readers might have, such as where to begin when needs seem overwhelming and how to overcome a "not enough" mentality. She finishes with a chapter of "stories of prosperity," filled with examples of how everyday people have created prosperous lives.

Creating True Prosperity is for every person wanting guidance in identifying "where they need more balance in their lives, freeing them to pursue fulfilling relationships and personal satisfaction."

Ths book is an edited version.
This book is good, but has been heavily edited.

I would recommend against buying this book, but instead buy "The Soul Of an Indian" Charles Alexander Eastman (Ohiyesa); published by University of Nebraska Press; ISBN: 0803267010.

Ohiyesa puts his spirituality in simple words without getting bogged down in ceremonies by rote, and dogma.

I HIGHLY recommend the writings by Ohiyesa. Just not this heavily edited version.

I encourage questions and comments via E-Mail. Two Bears.

The Soul of an Indian (C.A.Eastman)
If one wants to know what it is "really" like to have the problems of a drug addict, one doesn't ask the therapist (sorry), but rather the addict. Only a true Native American can explain the life, in its many aspects, of a Native American----and, although we have many examples of the wisdom of Native American chiefs, few attain the level, from a philosophical/religious view, as does Ohiyesa (C. Eastman). He is truly a poet in the simplicity of the words he uses, while simultaneously imparting a veritable glimpse of the meaning behind his words. For this reason alone, he, I believe, will be time-honored, when one wants to get a view of Native American life in the future.
Sadly, but perhaps necessarily, Ohiyesa was torn between two worlds---the white (education and profession, as well as residence in the East) and his heritage, which he felt bound to,as the atrocities continued to unfold in his lifetime, some of which he experienced firsthand.
For persons of "a certain ilk", I believe that the many people who respect the wisdom of "The Prophet" (Khalil Gibran)will equally respect this writing.

Excellent reading challenges your life purposes
The presentation of the indians life and purpose will challenge a persons prespectives of life and the purpose to which all of us have been called. Do you live a life of love or are we so drawn to the material and success orientations of this world that we have lost perspective of the real purpose of life? Ohiyesa will challenge each of us to look into yourselves and ask the question do I truly care for what is right or are my values based upon what I have acquired. Do I walk in truth or do I live a lie? Do I care for my neighbor or do I only think of myself? Do I see God in what has been created or do I deny His existence? Ohiyesa, will challenge the very foundations of western society and our ways of thinking. He challenges the christian and the church as presented in our society today. Do we live as Christ, or do we use Christ to obtain control? I found this book a great treasure of clear thinking and profound statements that make me question the values that I have what of you?

Know what you are purchasing
If you are looking for inspiration on your life and how you have much to be thankful for - this is for you! But if you are looking for techniques to manifest material prosperity, this isn't necessarily the ticket. The first section is coversational style going through what true prosperity is. The next section has two "meditations". The first meditiation goes through various aspects of your life and what you have to be thankful for. The second meditation is a creative visualization going through the various aspects of your life and how you would like to see things modified or improved. I gave it 4 stars because it is well done, as most of her work is, but yet isn't really about manifesting prosperity in your life.

Developing Intuition

Author: Shakti Gawain
Amazon base price: $10.95
Average review score:

disappointing
I expected more from this accomplished author. There are a lot of books about intuition out there yet, but my own intuition hasn't been much help in finding a satisfactory one. This book asks some important questions, such as how can you distinguish your intuitive voice from other inner voices (i.e. how do you know when to believe your hunches and when to regard them with skepticism), but I don't think she goes far enough in answering them. The book is only about 25,000 words, which is about one-third of a book by most publishing standards, and reads as if it was written in a week. Also, there is a tendency in new-age self-help books to write for an audience of would-be entrepreneurs or creative artists, which is of little usefulness to many potential readers, who might be able to use their intuition to deal with truly difficult situations ("you should see a therapist" is her advice to those with problems...). Maybe worth borrowing, but I wouldn't buy it.

A Great Little Book
This thin volume is a great little book if you want to understand more about intuition but don't want to spend a lot of time reading. Shakti Gawain gets straight to the point explaining what intuition is and how to become aware of it, trust it and use it in our daily lives. The explanations are succinct and there are simple exercises for the reader to help illustrate the points. If you are hooked and want to explore this topic further, I highly recommend both "Divine Intuition" by Lynn Robinson and "The Psychic Pathway" by Sonia Choquette.

Practical Guidance for Daily Life is Right On
Caroline Myss is the author/lecturer who tuned me into the whole inutition mode and this small book was a nice treat as far as filling in some blanks. Intuition is a new arena for most people, unless one has been blessed to have been born, married or both into a community of people who believe in the whole intuition as a deeply spiritual and humane tool for personal growth.

The book is just under 160 pages long and is nifty 8 X 10 in size and is handy to carry and read while waiting for an appointment, while on a break or simply as a relaxation tool anytime of day. There are 12 Chapters and they cover everything from What is Intuition, Becoming Aware, Trusting Yourself, Learning to Relax, Accessing Intuition, Acting on Intuition, Interpreting Intuitive Messages, Distinguishing Intuition from Other Voices,Intuition and Emotions,Intuition and the Body, Intuition and Work, The Art of Following Intuition etc.

Personally the Chapters on Trusting Yourself, Learning to Relax, and Distinguishing Intuition from Other Voices, were the most helpful and needed. Most helpful was her notation of the other selves that may "rule" us i.e. The Rational Mind/Intutition; The Responsible Self/The Free Spirit; The Caretaker/The Perfectionist; The Rule Maker/The Rebel; The Straight Talker; The Pleaser. Almost a YinYang inside some of us. Or two in one.

Reminding the reader how important it is to know the difference between a false craving and or addiction and our true intuitive impulses and how we need to with certain mental or awareness exercises learn to listen to our bodies. This is helpful for me as I have changed my lifestyle in order to get rid of (not simply lose or misplace) weight and become more physically fit. Anyone with a problem relating to drugs, alcohol, food, work, or relationships may find her tools to be an asset in learning to STOP and pay attention to the pull toward self destruction.

Her books reminded me of how sometimes I would feel the pull to eat something even when I wasn't hungry. But in learning to STOP and listen to what my body was saying, what I often discovered was that my body wanted some attention so I would either take a nap or go for a brief walk. Or the person who feels a sense of boredom and heads out the door to go buy something, anything, when the Authors lessons will teach you to STOP and listen to what your mind/body etc is REALLY saying.

Cultivating ones Intuitive powers will help save you money in the long term and as the authors has shown will help you become the happier and less stressed person you may have always wanted to be.

Don't waste your money
I came across my copy of this book while doing a cleanup. After not having looked at it for ten years I can't imagine what I ever saw in Shakti Gawain. The book is just a collection of puerile new age platitudes. If you want a book of daily readings, try 'A Deep Breath of Life' by Alan Cohen. After having attended seminars given by both people, I have a great deal of respect for Alan Cohen and would never attend another seminar given by Shakti Gawain.

I absolutely love this book
Doing the kind of work I do can be overwhelming and distressing. If I didn't nurture myself spiritually I would definitely be out of balance. Shakti Gawain's "Awakening" has been my daily meditation book of first choice for at *least* ten years. It has changed my life, my attitude, my perception of my own spiritual and emotional possibilities. I am *so* grateful for the doors in my mind that have opened as a result of the phrases that have caught me at the right time, leading me on a journey of healing and wholeness. I love this book, I absolutely love this book.
