This is one of the classics that children will remember for a long time to come, as I remember Dr. Seuss and Where the Wild Things Are.

This book is a rarity: a story with a moral that's fun (and funny!) for 21st century kids and their parents to read over and over again. Wonderful pictures, too -- the great Stephen Gammell's best. And you know what? I think it really works! I'll be darned if my own little Theos (...) aren't just little more considerate since they got a taste of Humble Pie!

This book is great for not only kids but adults too. It is very creative and there is so much detailed art work done with colored pencils. It's a GREAT BOOK!!!!

Will's Mammoth is a wonderful picture book, with a good story line. I have used this book to help children learn the writing process. In the current classroom (2nd grade)we are doing a unit on dinosaurs and I read Will's Mammoth to the children and then showed the illustrations. I had the children look close to the details of the illustrations and then they wrote discriptive sentences about the page of their choice. The students used their imagination to write their sentences and stories. You will be suprised at the outcome of any child's story within the Story of Will's Mammoth.

I thought it was a very good book. I would recommend it to everybody that likes the Civil War. It does deserve five stars because the Civil War was neat. There is lots of suspense in the book.

Excellent. I learned so much about Jackson, and felt so sad when he died at the end of the book. He was a big hero for the Confederacy. But what was strange is that he sucked lemons. Cool.

From boppin corn which loves to dance until they pop to an orange who falls in love with a lemon, Burger And The Hot Dog provides whimsical rhymes by Jim Aylesworth and Stephen Gammell's fun drawings.

The big old oak in the farmer's field was many things to many people. The children of Dimpole had played under the great tree for many generations. The farmer himself was fond of telling tales of ancient murders and hidden treasure under its branches. When an officious pillar of the community decides to take offense to the lurid tales, she plans a parade and public gathering at the tree.

At the same time, two neighborhood boys plan revenge on a local bully under the tree. Two shy adults gradually find some common ground, and the possibility of love. And an Indian swami sees the tree in a dream, and begins a pilgrimage. All come together under the beautiful old tree, with a surprising twist to the ending.

This little book is beautifully written, with clean, rhythmic prose. It begins with deceptive simplicity, but ties its many story lines together with a satisfying and poetic beauty that brings Louis Sachar's "Holes" to mind.

I bought this book for my daughter, but, once I began reading - and laughing - I had to continue to the warmly enjoyable end. This is very readable for all ages.

Poor old farmer MacDonald is a little confused. In a story told more through expressive, black-and-white line drawings than with words, old MacDonald tries to figure out what to do with all those animals on his farm. Ei-ei-o. Unfortunately, MacDonald first tries to farm with zoo animals. When the animals run away, MacDonald continues undaunted, now using proper farm animals, but assigning them the wrong jobs (e.g., he tries to use the chicken to plow).

Gammell's Old MacDonald is charming, educational, and easy for both parent and child to read again and again. In addition to the surprising revision of the old song, children enjoy the amusing, beautifully drawn illustrations and the chance to laugh at silly old MacDonald's mistakes. This book is everything a good children's book should be.

I say once you read this book I would say you would want to read the story more and more. Well I was Walking in the libary (Cerritos) looking for a scary book to read then in a while I saw this book called Scary Stories.
First I thougth it was a lame book but then I went Throught the book and then I was like wow now that's freaky man.But then after I check it out I thouth hey this is one of the freakest book I ever read in my entire life, so then I went looking for more.
The only books I read is three of this scary Stories books. But then I wonder why it did'nt make more.Scary Stories is one of the scariest books I read. It was even scaryer than that guy R.l Stine.But R.L Stine is still a good writer,but his stories aint as scary as Alvin Schwartz book's.
This book is one of my favorite books in the world. I am a guy who likes to read scary stories. I am a guy who dosent like to read books that are borning and that make's me want to fall aSleep.I also like this book because it's really not borning or stupit but it is cool.
I also really like this book because of all the pictures. The pictures are so scary and they look like they were going to jump of the book or some thing. The pictures of this book lookes like just the picture of a movie I watch called THE RING. But it is not close to be as the same becuase the ring is ten times as scary but lets not get of mind.

These books were my obsession in the second grade. My favorite stories are: "Room for One More," "Harold," the one where the lady steals a liver from a dead body to feed her husband--only to have the body pay a visit to find it's lost organ, and the story of the woman who dies of the plague while staying in a hotel. (This is not meant to slag any of the other stories) However, since I have yet to purchase this box set, I can only hope they're included.

The "Scary Stories" series came to my mind a week ago when I was trying to sleep, and I had to turn the lights on when I remembered the details of the stories. Mind you, I'm 19! Nothing--not Stephen King or Dean Koontz--has ever scared me so much. "Harold" has to be my favorite story of all.

These book taught me the power of words and to appreciate classic horror, at an early age. The stories may seem a little graphic for children, but I have no problem with giving them to my own if I decide to become a father someday.

I can't tell you how sad it is that while the utterly horrid Goosebumps series got huge media exposure and mainstreem success, including 2 tv series', this series was pretty much unheard of in my area. The stories are great, aside from a select few, but I agree with some of the other reviews in that the illustrations are utterly horrifying! Words don't do them justice. I don't see why they have previews of books with just words and they leave the pictures in this book unnoticed. When I was in 4th grade, I was so freaked out by them that If I saw a picture through a page that was especially scary I'd skip to a differen story. Even the ones from the funny stories were sometimes scary. Read these.

I think this is one of the best book that Alvin Schwartz has ever written. I really enjoyed his last two books so I decided to read this book and I was not disapointed. I really liked the short story form for the book because it left me wondering what would happen next. Some of the stories are some what alike. But all of them were still fun to read. I really enjoyed all the stories because they were really funny. I would recommend this book to everyone. I would especially recommend this book to people who has read the other books by Alvin Schwartz.

This is a wonderful collection of urban legends and reworkings of regional ghost stories. The stand out of the collection is the story of "Harold." Even though this book is mostly for older kids, "Harold" will definitely leave even adults unnerved.You won't be able to look at a scarecrow without being spooked for weeks after reading the story. This book offers scary stories that aren't gross and don't have some sort of underlying agenda. It's just plain fun.

I have collected all types of scary stories books throughout my childhood and this series ( all 3 books ) has to be the best collection ive ever read. I recently read this book again just to see how it would be 10 yrs later and see if the storys were still as good as i remembered and it was. I somehow lost this book between then n now and last time i read it i was about 10 or 11 so i got another copy and it's still as good as then. This book is excellent for children or teenagers and has some really classic scary stories in it and brilliant illustrations. Kids will find these illustrations very creepy and love the storys. I recomend this book to kids or any age group -its very fun to read and even has some creepy songs in some of the books.

Old Henry is a great childrens book that also has a moral. The moral of the story is that you should not judge a person for how they look, dress, or live but how they are as a person. The neighbor's of Henry in the story do just this and drive Henry to move away. The neighbors end up missing him and feel guilty about how they treated him. A child can learn a lot from the book.

It may not last forever, but this book has momentarily knocked Sherwood Anderson's "Winesburg, Ohio" into second place. "Old Henry" is now my favorite all time book, even after having owned it for about seven years. Oh, I used to read it all the time to the kids, but the moment I realized this book is now, for the time being, my all-time favorite book, is when I sat in the emergency room late one recent Saturday night.

My wife was in another room, discovering she had a broken foot from a slip earlier that day on a basement floor made wet by water leaking in through the walls.

I spend far too much time doing home maintenance these days, mopping up wet basement floors, calculating how the house will be sided or painted, deciding whether topaint or replace a garage door, trimming hedges and yanking weeds.

All of these ridiculous, no-win chores simply chip away at the time I want for reading, writing and drawing. It is not enough that parenthood justly requires so much time and energy -- we signed on for that -- but the treadmill that is home maintenance is a horror for anyone who likes to sit by the bird feeder and read magazines.

I envy, then, Old Henry, who wants only to move in, leave things be, and read and draw while his neighbors are concerned about the length of his grass.

My uncle once explained to me why he barely ever trims his bushes. "I want them to express themselves," he said, comparing his free-flowing shrubs to the neighbors' which were stiff and buzzcut as military sentries.

So I used to read "Old Henry" for my kids. Now it is at my bedside, along with the magazines and feng shui books, all reminders that if I want to nurture my mind, I'll have to give up the landscaping and such, and while the water in the basement must be mopped up lest anyone else break a bone, that we actually do have the freedom to surrendur to nature, let it grow and grow around us, and in that sweet surrendur, curl up defeatedly with a book.

I thought that this book was really good. I think that it will help kids understand how you should never judge people because that is what they did in the book. The neighbors judge Henry because he moved into a house and he did not fix it up so his neighbors cleaned his yard for him and was running him out. The neighbors did what they wanted but when he left the neighbors started to miss him. It shows that with him gone there was something special the people liked about him.
