Meeting By the River
Published in Paperback by Methuen Co Ltd ()
Author: Christoph Isherwood
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $3.85
Average review score:

A Thought-provoking read
Isherwood takes on the ambiguities inherent in sexuality, religious devotion, and sibling relationships in a completelynon-polemical way. Easy to read, involving, and witty, the Isherwood way. A fifth star would be deserved if the book were a little messier--it does have a slight tendency toward "patness". But that's a minor quibble. END

P- And Hp- Finite Element Methods: Theory and Applications in Solid and Fluid Mechanics (Numerical Mathematics and Scientific Computation)

The mathematical theory of p- and hp-FEMs
The number of books on high order p- and hp-finite element methods is limited. This book goes one step further by providing a rigorous mathematical treatement of these methods applied to linear elliptic boundary value problems. It includes very recent advances in the field and it is an excellent resource for both researchers and educators. The only negative aspect of this first edition of the book is the (unusually high number of) typographical errors. Hopefully, this will be corrected in the second edition.

Up to date and State of the art
Povh, Rith, Scholz, and Zetsche have written an exceptional book about nuclei and particles. It is comprehensive, but not too elaborate to confuse the reader, it is up to date, but provides a thorough guide to the contemporary topics, and it has an unusual structure that is very compelling: In part one, the decomposition of matter down to the structures of elementary particles is presented, in part two, the synthesis of composite systems out of these fundamental particles and their interactions is discussed. This approach is - from a structural point of view - a brilliant idea.

So why do I rate this book with 4 stars only? Maybe because I personally like Donald Perkins' book on high-energy phyics even better (and if the new edition is as good as announced it will probably remain my preferece). The nuclear physics content (my personal field of interest) is also only briefly addressed in the book by Povh et al. (Perkin's book of course contains no introduction to nuclear structure at all, even on a very rough scale, but it has its focus clearly only on high-energy physics whereas Povh et al. also address nuclear structure issues). Clearly, Povh et al. focus on the introduction to a wide field where addtional reading is required anyway.

It would be highly desirable if the authors could enlarge their interesting introductory textbook by a few topical results of nuclear structure physics. But all in all, it is a very good approach to the world of nuclei, particles, and their interactions.

The Physics of Atoms and Quanta: Introduction to Experiments and Theory

OK book on Atom Physics
This book is very readable and very clear. It can be used in advanced undergrad courses on atom physics. It treats the development of Atom Physics theory and experiments (Rutherford, Bohr etc.). It provides explanations to many practical quantum problems in the field of atom physics, so it can also be used to clarify problems in a Quantum Physics course. Some example problems briefly discussed in books like Gasiorowicz or David Griffiths on QF were very well explained here. Quite complete on the subject of Atom Physics. Exercises with (brief) solutions. German authors seem to have done a thorough job. Negative points: heavy, expensive, limited subject, published some time ago. I consider it a good buy afterall.

Towards an International Criminal Procedure
Published in Hardcover by Oxford University Press (2003)
Author: Christoph Safferling
Amazon base price: $45.00
Average review score:

informative, well written
the book has a tendency to be somewhat technical, but then again the subject is ambiguous. The author overall does a great job in explaining the it. Though it's for a course I'm currently taking, I would've read it anyway.

Recommended for anyone interested in the interplay between criminal justice, international affairs and the rule of law.

Voodoo: Secret Power in Africa (Jumbo Series)

Authors: Henning Christoph, Hans Oberlander, and Oberlander Hans
Amazon base price: $39.99

Collectible price: $31.76

Visually lush, decent information
The imagery in this book is beautiful. Photography and printing, excellent. Focused primarily on Voodoo in Benin, Africa. Most Voodoo texts cover primarily Hatian or American practices, so this book enjoys a bit of rarity. The information is fairly guidebook/expidition style. Not particularly sociological or studious, it presents recollections and learnings of the author and photographer as they traveled through Benin to photograph their subjects. Worth the price of admission for the quality of the images.

Workflow Management: Modeling Concepts, Architecture and Implementation
Published in Paperback by International Thomson Publishing (1996)
Authors: Stefan Jablonski and Christoph Bussler
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $20.00
Average review score:

One of the better books on the subject of Workflow
But that's not saying a lot. There are a number of interesting concepts presented in this book and the coverage of existing products is well done. On the downside, there are too many words expended about what is to be covered in each chapter which would be better spent in actual coverage; the book lacks continuity. Still, it is unique as it is the only book on the subject that covers in any sort of depth implementation concerns.

A very good source to prepare for the test.
I took the MOC course, purchased the Microsoft Self Study Guide, used the NT Resource Kit, online documentation, and this book to pass the IIS 4.0 exam. This book was by far the best of those resources. It was easy to read and covered the key areas well. Use this book, NT Resource Kit, and Braindumps and you should have all the resources you need to study for the test.

Good study guide for MCSE test
This book go through most of the objects list in the Preparation Guide for Exam 70-087. I bought this book along with EXAM CRAM's IIS4 and found out that "Teach Yourself IIS 4 in 14 Days" provide lots of important info for the test which are not covered in the EXAM CRAM. Compare both books before you buy.

Great Book
After reading Sams Teach Yourself TCP/IP In 14 Days and passing the exam easily, I had to try this book for the IIS 4 exam. I'm glad I did. Read this book in front of your PC and go through the exercises. This exam has quite a few simulations with Microsoft Management Console, and you'll need to be familar with MMC. I passed the IIS 4 exam with an 854 (MCSE!), and alot of credit should go to this book. I also suggest downloading some free prep exams to be prepared for the types of questions you will be asked. The only problem I had with this book is the glossary doesn't exist, but still gave it 5 stars. Good luck.

Age of Napoleon
Published in Hardcover by Value Proprietary (1988)
Author: J. Christoph Herold
Amazon base price: $1.00
Used price: $3.16
Average review score:

Efficient for Overview
This was a book that may prove diappointing to the reader with existing knowledge of Napoleon and the era which bears his name, however, to someone with little knowledge of the Napoleonic era to begin with or who wishes to receive an efficient overview of this important era of western history it is a good read. The book gives an unbiased account of the campaigns and undertakings of Napoleon, as it presents the views and actions of the other leaders and powers in Europe beside Napoleon, broadening the intention of the book beyond an account of one man's life to encompass a compact history of Europe at the beginning of the 19th century. It is certainly a terrific read for the average reader though certainly not for the historian or scholar, who may view the book as broad and not specific in detail.

For the reader who wishes to learn the important facts, philosophies and developments of the Napoleonic Era this book is a very recommendable read that I would fully recommend, especially if you may wish to use it as a gateway book that can culture the reader so he/she can move on to more intense Napoleonic reading.

Now I know about Napoleon!
Before reading this, I never did know the whole story about Napoleon, even after reading War and Peace and visiting his grandiose tomb in Paris on several occasions -- a must-see, right up there near Graceland.

This is a great book for anyone who wants to know who Napoleon was, what he did, and why it mattered. I'm sure there are better, more drawn-out, academic and specific books out there, and maybe I'll end up disagreeing with the author's inclination that there is a certain villainy in Napoleon's climbing the ladder of power until he could take over as much of the world as possible, but I don't see that as far-fetched at this point.

This is not hard to read at all -- it flows well, and is just long, compared to some books. In the end, you'll have the overall picture, all the major players and all the background you need to talk about Napoleon and find out more.

Recommended: an enlightening and entertaining read
This is not a perfect book. That the author doesn't think Napoleon should be deified, however, is no reason to malign it--online or anywhere else. In fact, Herold presents a convincing picture of "Napoleonic" Europe. Besides characterizing Napoleon, his adversaries, and a whole supporting cast, the author portrays the economy, politics, and culture of the times.

There is some oversimplification in Herold's book, and some of his conclusions may be open to debate. All good historians take some risks. But this book is a thoroughly researched and well written introduction to an important era in Western history. It certainly deserves to be read.

ASP in 24 Hours
Very poorly written. The authors should pay you to read this book. With VC++ 6.0, chapter one, listing 1.1 SysAllocString(L"Hello, ATL!"); that L is a type cast to OLECHAR FAR *. The same orthgraphy is in the source code. Listing 1.2: it seems that the #include should be for Hour1Server which was created on page 6, not Day1Server. Also no idea what a Day1Server_1.c is but it is referenced later on page 53 in chapter three. Too many forward references in chapter one to concepts that they say will be explained in later chapters like five or six. This is not a stepwise refinement to learning ATL. For SAMS Publishing, a sorry excuse of a book. Best to pass on it.

Easy To Follow Examples
I bought this book because of the reviews on this site. This book turned out to be more advanced than expected. If you are going to buy this book, make sure you know HTML, some JavaScript, basic SQL, and VBScript. Through the examples I was able to pick up the SQL and VBScript knowledge with a fair amount of effort. The thing I liked about this book was that it stuck to the topic at hand. Lots of other computer books stray far away from their topics. Several times in the book the authors said...that a certain topic was beyond the scope of the book and if you want more info look elsewhere. Another nice thing about this book was that you can complete 75% of the examples using free downloadable software (MS Personal Web Server). On the other hand, the IIS/NT Server topics were over my head. You will learn a lot if you type in all of the sample code and try to follow along with the examples. On the downside, this book seemed to skip from topic to topic without any real transition.
