The Year of the Badger

a must-read for animal-lovers
The Year of the Badger is the touching story of how a family brought up an orphaned badger. The badger, Nikki, is such a sweet , adorable little thing in the beginning, and as she grows up she becomes more cunning and mischievous. She's so cute, it makes me want to have a pet badger myself. She is constantly getting into trouble and causing humorous situations. After a while, her natural instincts take over and it becomes evident that she needs to be set free. I don't want to give away the whole book, so read it yourself.

Explains every question about god, spirit, life and death.
I just happened to go to a psychic and she told me that my spirit guides told me I should read this book. My spirit guide said that it would explain all the questions I have ever had about god, where I came from, and my past lives. And boy did it ever. The book goes in to great detail about birth, life, death, reincarnation, zodiacs, and so much more. I recommend it to anyone who is confused about god, religion or their spiritual well being. The content of this book will explain everything. I read every word in two days and accepted it as truth, not fiction.

This book is a life-changer
I read this book for the first time in my early teens, and twenty years later I am still coming back to it. With every read there is more recognition, truth and beauty to discover. There are so many more facets to the story than I suspected during the first read. Although the book lifts off slowly and some later chapters are decidedly difficult at a first confrontation with the subject matter, I recommend this book with all my heart to anyone even remotely interested in the esoteric sciences.

Conquer your fears and live for today
Kubler-Ross is a role model to be looked upon for faith, courage and love, and the greatest of her gifts is love. In the footsteps of her mentor Dr. Albert Schweitzer she vowed to live and give her life for those less fortunate then herself. In her memoirs she give us an account of her life from her years has living her childhood as a triplet and not having an identity to her years as a young woman finding her identity and her golden years lived out with the same force, determination and courage as in her youth. She never deterred from her goals and focused herself beyond what life and circumstances were sent her way. She could have stopped in mid-stream, saying that she had done enough for humanity but at the age of 63, after many disasters, went to Virginia to set up a home for children dying of AIDS. She met with much disapproval but managed to get beyond the dissent of the people and found foster homes for these children. Since 1972, I have been interested in the issues of death and dying and Elisabeth Kubler-Ross has confirmed many of my ideas and beliefs. Thank you Elisabeth for taking a stand and making this world a better place.

Read about life
After I read this book,I know more about death and dying. But what really attract me?I think it's the writer-Elisabeth Kubler Ross-herself.This book is just like a autobiography of herself.Tell us all about her family and her school life.Let us not only know more about what is death and dying but why and how she would like to devote herself to study thanatology.Everyone should read it,because it is really a book about life itself.

I think of Dr. Ross over strong black coffee
I have just finished reading her book, Wheel Of Life, and recommend it highly. It is her autobiography in which she pulls no punches as per her beliefs and recounts her life of service to the dying. It is written with simplicity, passion, humanitarian concern and Love.

A significant portion of "Wheel of Life" does deal with near death experiences, out of body experiences, after death communications and messages from Jesus. But the truly remarkable aspect of the book are not these fantastic, sensational paranormal accounts, rather what shines brightest is the measure of unconditional Love she has shown to the suffering throughout her life. Her long record of helping terminally ill patients cope and grow in death through unconditional Love and significant self sacriifice gives those paranormal claims a degree of crediblity that otherwise might not exist.

Every morning as I sit savoring my strong, black coffee, I think of Dr. Ross' lesson of Love.

Used to be hot stuff.
When I first started teaching an undergraduate course in Death & Dying in 1972, I could correctly assume that every student had already read Kubler-Ross. Now, they've never heard of her, which is a pity. Despite the total lack of evidence to support her five-stage paradigm, she did us all a favor by pulling the shroud off of the topic. She was the first popular writer to deal with feelings of the dying patient. Her book, which cost $1.95 back then, was hot stuff. She actually talked to terminally ill people and didn't beat around the bush. Now we've got any number of pop psychologists applying her five -stage theory to all sorts of things she never even thought of: grief, marriage problems, alcohol treatment, you name it. I tell my students that the staging theory has been around for 32 years now. If it is going to have any experimental support, perhaps it might have emerged by now. The fact is that people are much more complex than any five stages can account for, and people can hold more than one emotion at a time. I've heard Kubler-Ross herself say this many times. But, we can remember five ideas, so there you have it. If she'd proposed a 16-stage hierarchy, she would have never gotten big. At any rate, there are no real scientists in thanatology that now credit her much at all any more, but for historical purposes this is still a valuable book.

EXCELLENT BOOK FOR FAMILY OF THE TERMINALLY ILL
"On Death and Dying" is an excellent resource book for someone who has or is about to lose someone close to them. As a counsellor I have counselled many individuals through grief and while each family/individual is unique, the patterns are generally the same. The book deals with the five stages that accompany grief: 1)Denial and isolation, that is shutting yourself off from family and friends, social or work related activities and refusing to accept the reality of what has happened. 2)Anger, "the why did this have to happen to me" stage and the need to blame. 3)Bargaining, for example, if I could just have this person back, I would not do this, or I would do that. 5)Depression, the feeling there is no reason to go on and a sense of being constantly overwhelmed, often feeling loss of control over their life. 5)Acceptance, of the way things really are and choosing to live the best possible life you can, anyway.

While these stages can be applied to death under any circumstance, I found the book primarily revolved around the terminally ill as opposed to someone who has died suddenly without prior warning. However, it is important to remember that even though death may not be anticipated at a particular moment in time, most of us go through the same stages of grief regardless of whether or not the death is anticipated or unanticipated. The book will NOT lessen the grief, but the words found here may help readers to understand the grieving process and that grieving is a natural life process, even though it feels very un-natural, confusing and totally devastating at the time.

A *very* useful guide through a *very* difficult time!
When my mother was dying, I was confronted with a *lot* of issues to which I had never given much thought, having never been in that kind of position before. So, even the attitudes and beliefs about death I had carried for some time were brought into question, and I really needed some kind of simple guidance into how to approach all the very painful and confusing issues, both externally and internally. After I read this book, I was very much more confident about my own reactions, and had a lot more insight into how to handle the various communication and interpersonal difficulties inherent in this very stressful time. It's a simple book, easy to understand, and addresses all of the most important issues in a kind but factual manner.

THE BEST BOOK I'VE READ .
LOVE BYTES IS THE BEST BOOK EVER, I REALLY RECOMEND YOU TO READ IT. IT'S GREAT, THE STORY IS ABOUT A GROUP OF REAL CLOSE FRIENDS, WHO ARE SO COOL, THEY REMIND ME OF MY FRIENDS, WHEN YOU START THE BOOK YOU CAN'T BUT IT DOWN, YOU FEEL AS IF THE PEOPLE YOUR READING ABOUT ARE YOUR BESTEST FRIENDS. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ NUMBER TWO!!!!!!!!!!

THIS BOOK ROCKED!
This book is one that deals with realistic teen issues. I could especially relate with Natalie, I've been in a (sort of) similar situation in the past. I can't wait to read the next books! Elizabeth Craft has created a believable cast of characters who can me and a lot of other teens can assimilate with. Ms. Craft has done a wonderful job so far! Keep the great books coming!!!

The coolest book I've read in awhile.
It's about time someone wrote young adult fiction that didn't put all of us teens into one category. I really enjoyed reading this book more than I expected. The characters I could most relate to where Blue and Jason. The only reason I didn't give this book a rating of 10 is because I didn't feel there was enough attention focused on them. I can't wait to find out what happens between them in the next book!

Excellent and challenging book for all
This book is appropriate for male and female, single and married of all ages. The information in this book was very helpful. This book presents standards which seem hard to live, but very helpful. This book helped me to understand the roles my boyfriend and I play in our serious relationship. This book is very interesting, as Elliot provides many good real life examples.

An excelent Book. Guys, you need this book too. I did.
Mrs. Elliot relates many stories associated with courtship and the methods to go about the process. I wish I had this book earlier in my life. I just broke off a 4 year relationship with a wonderful young lady and I think if I had this book earlier things would have been different. God is the God of second chances so I will use them in any relationships to come. By the way, the mother of a girl I'm interested in gave me this book to read. If you have any guys hanging around your house and you know why they are there, give them this book. I went through it in three days. It's great reading.

This is a great book. Life is now easier.
Guys tend to shy away from Elizabeth Elliot. Shy away no longer. This book (and Passion and Purity) not only changed my view of this crazy phenomenon we call dating, it helped change my view of our amazing Creator. Life is much better because of EE's writings.

Book review from da Germanchick
I chose the book "The Select" of F.Paul Wilson, who was not just an brilliant author he also was a skilled medic, used his knowledge in the novel. "The select" story is fiction, but the setting is in the Ingraham College of Medicine in Maryland.

Quinn cleary , one of the main characters is 21 years old and lives in Connecticut she and her friend Matt Crawford have an invitation for the selection of the fifty news students who are the best to get a scholarship. Matt has a friend Tim Brown who is also invited. Quinn comes from a poor family and she really need to get this scholarship it's her biggest dream, and in the Ingraham you have to pay nothing. Tim and Matt have enough support from their parents, if they would fail, it wouldn't be so bad.

After Quinn and Tim made it because Matt gave his place for Quinn, they felt something is going on in there, something not right. Some mysterious coincidences folowed which made Tim more thinking about. The Ingraham has some secrets no one outside could notice. They found out the studentrooms are asculate. When Tim knew too much about these serects, workers of the Ingraham, who are behind this secret tried to do him away with hiding him in station c, where the doctor, Dr.Alston makes skin experiments with innocent people, like Tim, who also find out something is wrong in the Ingraham before him. This secret contains manipulating the students thinking with electric rays in their beds. Quinn didn't know where he was and she started looking him. After a while she got to know by her own researches that he is still in the Ingraham. With many thrilling actions F.Paul Wilson starts to confuse the reader and you really have to pay attention what happens earlier to follow along.

It has a good end, Quinn informed the police and Mat who helped braking the long dark secret of the Ongraham. Tim who ended in the hospital because he got in fight when he escaped, and Quinn
ahieved wht they wanted: Bring the truth to the people.
The title "The select" has many backgrounds with the novel which you will nly understand after reading the book. it strts with the select of the fifty students.
I think this book is vry good and interetig. it difers from oyher crime novels and it never becomes borin. It is a really detailed book. Some informationare similar to ow experiences an some yu learn new about.
When I firstread the topic I ouldn't imagine how filled with information this book is, it seems to be like a more normal crime problem, not that specil, but it is surpriing more than that and that made me reading and reaing because of all these changes and new actions.
I would say you shouldn't read this novel under fourteen years because of some details and specific descriptions. I liked the book a lot and it was more interesting for me aftereading than before, just knowing a little bit of context what seems after finishing like no information.

The Select
I came across a gem when I purchased this book at a thrift store. Wow!! What a medical thriller. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat. You never know where F. Paul Wilson will take you. This is a great book--a guaranteed suspense read.

The kind of book Robin Cook wishes he could write.
A unique (read the book and find out why) student at a prestigious and ultra-elite medical school begins to suspect that it has darker motives than its public facade of philanthropy. Dark Fantasy writer, creator of the Adversary Cycle, and practicing MD F. Paul Wilson surpasses medical thriller novelist Robin Cook's entire output with seeming little effort. Not once does the book seem unbelievable. I give it my highest recommendation.

Western Way of War: Infantry Battle in Classical Greece
Published in Hardcover by Knopf (1989)
Authors: Victor Davis Hanson and Elisabeth Sifton
Amazon base price: $19.95
Used price: $15.88
Average review score:

Superb study of Greek warfare during the classic era.
Dr. Hanson, a leading classical scholar, provides an excellent examination of how warfare among the Greek city-states was conducted. He places particular emphasis on how the individual soldier fought. On the one hand, combat in the front line must have been awful; on the other hand, because the armies were made up of men who had known each other for years, unit cohesion must have been very high. While thoroughly researched, Hanson does not fall back on academic jargon, and his points are easily understood by the nonspecialist. As he demonstrates, the method of warfare, while often fatal to the soldiers, left property and noncombatants unharmed. Unfortunately, later in the wars between Athens and Sparta a more complete, and thus destructive manner of warfare developed. This is an excellent book for anyone interested either in classical Greece or the history of warfare.

Anything But Modern Warfare!
Victor Davis Hanson is by trade apparently both a California viniculturist and an academic scholar of classical Greek history. So John Keegan says in his introduction to this new edition of an established minor classic. The improbable combination of such disparate occupations has shaped his conception of ancient Greek warfare: he argues that the ritualistic hoplite battle formalized during the "golden period" of Greek antiquity was inextricably linked to the nature of Greek agriculture. To avoid devastating loss of food (particularly wine) production and desolation of invaluable land, the seemingly ceaseless wars between Greek city states and their various shifting alliances had to be short, rapidly decisive, and--necessarily as a result--brutally sanguineous. Greeks deliberately fought according to a set of mutually acknowledged rules that limited wartime injury to the participating infantrymen themselves, and kept intact the soil and farms from which they came.

In his book Hanson takes us step by step through the violent clash of opposing Greek armies and reveals in remarkably technical detail just what was involved. Perhaps even more important, he recreates the personal experience of individual participants during such a battle. Following in the footsteps of many modern (post-World War II) historians who are more interested in the private soldier than the commanding general, he gives us a gritty sense of what it was like for Greek farmer soldiers to undergo combat in traditional phalanx formation. (Consequently, Steven Pressfield acknowleges that Hanson was one of the sources he referred to when writing his engrossing "Gates of Fire", a fictional treatment of the famous Battle of Thermopylae.)

In this sense there is a firm connection between ancient and modern warfare: ultimately it was--and is--fought by men who must deal with their own personal fears of wounding, dismemberment, and death. This has not changed, and so long as there is still a human element to war, will not change. But Hanson takes a step beyond simple individual motivation; and in the closing pages of the book he discusses the implications of modern total warfare, where the ritualized, bloody (but still carefully limited) battle of ancient Greece has given way to the usually uncontrolled, all-destructive (rather than fundamentally conserving) combat of today. It makes for thoughtful, stimulating reading.

(Those who find this subject matter interesting might find other Hanson books worth looking at. His more recent "Soul of Battle" devotes its first third to a discussion of war between Thebes and Sparta. "The Wars of the Ancient Greeks" is one volume of a slick series of popular histories which have John Keegan as their editor; aimed at the uninitiated general public, this title nonetheless is a good introduction to warfare in classical Greece.)

Flawless Detail--Faulty Analysis
Hanson writes a vivid, realistic description of the horror of hoplite combat. He gives the reader an in-depth armchairview of agrarian city-state warfare. There is much to be learned from this book about battle with edged weapons.

In the final chapter, however, when he tries to blame the horrors of modern total war on the psychology of the hoplite battle, he goes astray. As bloody and unpleasant as the hoplite battle was, it was really a system designed to limit non-combatant casualties. Only the soldiers on the chosen field of battle exposed themselves to injury while the city-states themselves suffered little behind their stout walls. Hoplite warfare was sort of like settling international disputes by means of a very bloody football game.

This all changed when Hoplite met Immortal in the Persian Wars. In addition to learning that the Immortals were misnamed, The Greeks learned total war from the East. In this war for survival as a civilization, the Greeks began to look on battle as more than bloody and sometimes fatal sport. The bloodbath that began at Marathon continued through Thermopylae, Salamis, and Plataea, and the Greeks began to understand warmaking in terms of total war. Hanson overlooks this Persian "contribution" to the Western way of warmaking.

5+++++++
If I could give a 10 out of 5, I would! This book seriously helped me and still helps me today. If you are stuck on dating for the rest of your life or simply can't give it up, you may not like this book. Also, this book has some RADICAL priciples for purity that some people may not like. NOTE: There is a difference between a radical and a legalist. :) However, if you are a person who is willing to be single for a while, this book will encourage you. Some things about women in the end of the book upset me :(, but that is just my opinion. However, a lot of what she says about women is true! This book really helped me to understand what kind of man I want...a godly man with a serious hunger for the Lord...one who puts God first in everything and that singleness is a GIFT!!!!!

Again, this book isn't for a person who insists on dating. This book encourages one to really surrender it all (all areas of a Christians life) to God. The loudest principles in this book were patience in everything, purity, and how to save passion for the one you (intend to) marry. I LOVED IT! Please buy it. Even if you question the books material, it's worth a try. This is coming from a 19 yr old female by the way so I'm not some old(er) woman telling you that this book is good. Apply these principles to our day and they still work, contrary to popular belief (that the priciples are too old fashioned). If this is too rough for you try I Kissed Dating Good-bye or When God Writes Your Love Story for some examples.

Change your perspective on what is pure in dating
If you want to see a real example of a couple keeping themselves pure before God, this is an awesome book. Yes, she is a little dry but that is what is good about it. She isn't selling fluff that isn't what God is about. She tells a story of her courtship with Jim Elliot, an awesome man of God. I don't care what people say about "I kissed dating goodbye" being better they are wrong. God used this book to change my perspective on purity to be a Godly woman and to know how I conduct myself and not chase after relationships. To enjoy my role and to then encourage other women to stay pure until their wedding day and not pursue men. God used this woman tremendously in my life and the lives of the other ladies in a single women's study to understand what God wanted from us as women. I married a year ago and our first kiss, EVER, was when the pastor said you may now kiss your bride and I am so glad she was obedient to write this book. Buy extra copies you'll need them for your kids.

Go Get Your Highlighters
This book had so much solid information, I will definitely be reading it again in the future! When I started the book, I didn't know how Elliot could possibly write 188 pages about purity in relationships. By the time I closed the book, I knew I had enough facts to live my life on! Elliot uses the story of the relationship she had with her first husband to encourage readers to be pure in their relationships with the opposite sex and with God. For Elliot, purity does not merely mean chastity, although that is a key element. Purity reveals itself as selflessness in relationships, fulfillment by God before man, patience, and many other important lifestyle characteristics. While many nonfiction books draw me closer to the author, this book drew me closer to God. Of the many things that God taught me through the book, one thing that I gleaned was this: contrary to the world's thought process, singleness is a FREEDOM to serve God without distraction, not an obligation (page 57). Also, God showed me that a man who is "prepared to swim against the tide" is the only kind of man worth waiting for (page 129). This book has so much to teach, I recommend that you get your own to read and keep a highlighter nearby so that you can highlight everything that sticks out to you; you'll be glad you did in the end.
