Brilliant
This is a brilliant collection of essays by Dr. Samuel Francis, perhaps the leading paleoconservative writer today. As many people don't know, most of today's so-called "conservative" thinkers are in fact "neo-conservatives," or as Francis says "neo-liberals." They accept many of the premises of liberalism, but think liberalism went to far in the 70's. Rather than providing an alternative to the liberals, they are just another aspect of what Francis' mentor, James Burnham, called the "managerial class." This collection contains excellent essays on Martin Luther King, Joe McCarthy and other subjects.

If you like the show, you'll like spending 3 hours with this
This is a refreshing way to spend your time listening to some of the best interviews from the show. I like the show but sometimes don't have time to catch it on NPR. This audio set gives me lots of the memorable interviews I've heard or partially heard over the years. It's a great collection of some of the folks who are major influences in their work. The inquisitive and probing questions of Terry Gross really open up conversations with the likes of Tracy Ullman and Dennis Franz, they sound like us. These are wonderful snippets of real life.

Something Everyone Should Know About
The Judicial Branch of our Federal government plays a vital role which affects our daily lives. Yet most of us don't know much about the appointment term of the Supreme Court Justices.

The book teaches the reader that the Supreme Court Justices are not necessarily appointed for life. Their appointment lasts throughout the time they exhibit "Good Behavior". I believe the Founding Fathers' intention here was to have the Justices be held accountable for their actions but not be hampered by the political and other pressures created by limited terms. An assumption of a lifetime term alleviates the "Good Behavior" condition's intended result.

I enjoyed the fact that the book provides this insight in a tone that is positive and easy to read. I think all Americans would enjoy its contents.

A Neglected Thinker of Our Time
Samuel Francis is the premier theoretician of the paleoconservative movement and has for years studied and applied the thought of James Burnham to today's politics.

Burnham was unique among conservative thinkers. Unlike conservatives who based their theories on religion, tradition, or natural law, Burnham was rigorously empirical in his approach to political problems. Nonetheless, this led him to conservative conclusions. Heavily influence by the so-called "realist school" of politics (Machiavelli, Michels and Pareto), Burnham sought to discover universal laws of politics and apply them to foreign policy and cultural change.

This is an enjoyable introduction to Burnham's thought and a model of organization. Francis discusses Burnham's overall philosophy and analyzes his thought chronologically, book by book. Francis also refutes a couple claims widely made about Burnham. First, he shows that (contrary to Rothbard) Burnham did devote considerable time to objecting to the growth of state power. Although Burnham was hardly a libertarian or even a minimal government conservative, he was generally supportive of free enterprise and limited government. Second, contrary to contemporary neoconservatives (and libertarian foreign policy writer Justin Raimondo), Burnham was not a proto-neocon. Burnham supported an "interventionist" foreign policy to fight the Soviet Union and communism, but his writings in this area can hardly be seen as a blueprint for a neocon New World Order.

This book should be supplemented by Kelly's recently published biography of Burnham, JAMES BURNHAM AND THE STRUGGLE FOR THE WORLD, which presents the neocon "take" on Burnham.

RFTM must rdg for principled conservatives of all stripes
Dr. Francis has a writing style and a subtle wit that I believe is second to none. He illustrates well poitical phenomenoms that very few writers see or dare to touch. Even though RFTM is a collection of his essays in another publication from 1989-96, the sundry subject matters fit together very well in near-booklike fashion. Dr. Francis does contradict himself from time to time (to his credit, far less than most conservatives, neo, ultra, or paleo), and he seems to posess a fundamental Washingtonesque snobbiness on infrequent occasion, and those are the only reasons I would give that I did not give it a perfect ten. Otherwise, get it, committ it to memory, and avoid lending it out as you may never get it back.

The Real American Dilemma: Race, Immigration, and the Future of America

An Eye-Opening Book
"The Real American Dilemma" is a jolting account of America's greatest problem. The writers gathered here do not worship at the shrine of multiculturalism or diversity.

Jared Taylor, Samuel Francis, Michael Levin and Philippe Rushton have all paid a great price for their honesty in discussing the biological, cultural and political consequences of a multiracial, multicultural America.

This book should be read by everyone who cares about the future of their country. Whites are going to have to start asking themselves hard questions such as: Do I want to live in a Third-World nation full of Third-World people? Must I continue to pay high taxes to subsidize those who cannot or will not assimilate into Western culture? What will life be like when people like Lani Guinier are on the Supreme Court or proficiency in Spanish is required for a government job? Do non-whites honor the rights and culture of whites when they are in power?

Because time is running out, they had better ask themselves these questions soon.

excellent book
I bought this book in 1999, and never stopped to be reminded of it whenever some event in my personal experience related to immigration. We are losing this country only because white people believe that other races will be as tolerant as whites when they get into power in a future that is not even very far.

Very good book, highly recommended
Perhaps this book is better for younger readers who, like myself, are too young to remember the civil rights movement of the 60s. I find that people from previous generations have very fixed ideas about race relations in this country and will not be open minded when reading Mr Taylor's book. It is an honest appraisal of the problems facing the US in the coming decades.
