Poignant account of alternative female life
I got this book out of a pile of old second-hand paperbacks on sale as one of my resources on an Amazon novel. On this part, Walton has a wealth of detail to illustrate Amazon life. On the story, though, it's quite sad. Being about the story of Theseus abduction of the Amazon Queen Antiope, Walton also describes how the Amazons encounter hardships at the hands of ruthless men. It's almost like propaganda that, even if women become mighty, men will seek to destroy them. So Antiope dies, the Amazons are scattered, and Theseus is out of a girlfriend. He wasn't such a good guy in this novel, too. The archaic language was also quite difficult to relate to, in this modern age where modern language gets used even in ancient accounts. Anyway, it was a good attempt to render a myth in realistic terms, though in chronology was different from the Greek myth's. Walton's idea of Amazons was truly poignant.

This book blows my balls!!
Don't ever read this book. It is a waste of time
A wonderful collection of war time kindness
This book was commissioned by the Salvation Army to declare the deeds of the brave women who went to help those who did not have the comforts of home. While at times this book was campy in nature and clearly of a direct leaning towards the Salvation Army it also contained many accounts of hard work and perserverance in the face of great physical and mental hardship. The women did everything they could to encourage the young soldiers to act as true heroes. They did things from making donuts to creating a place where soldiers could come as a refuge from the ravages of war. This book helped me to feel more supportive towards those who serve in the armed forces.

Not a great representation of Hispanic lit.
This novel about several Puerto Rican people who (are supposed to) have something in common is not well written mostly because of the author's mediochre grasp of English, and because of a disjointed plot which doesn't come together well. For better Puerto Rican literature try the "Boricuas" anthology.

If I hear "heaving breast" once more I'll puke...
While this book does have some exciting parts, in general my SO and I found it to be quite repetitive. Neither of us believe that it was written by a woman. It is, however, packed-full-o depraved sex, so it can't be *ALL* bad, can it? We gave it along with others to my sister-in-law (who's working on an erotic story for a writing class) as an example of how NOT to do it.
