The best source for the life and testimonies of Quakers
This is the first person account of the founder of the Quakers (Society of Friends), George Fox, and it is the best resource for the life and testimonies of Quakers. It is an exciting read full of action, truth and common sense living.

A fascinating children's story in a true historical setting.
An enthralling story wonderfully written and finely illustrated, Little Fox's Secret offers a plausible explanation for a true historical event long shrouded in mystery. The reader is swept along by the unfolding drama as well as the vivid descriptions. This is no ordinary children's book. The quality of the story, the fine writing, and the beauty of the book itself will make Little Fox's Secret a childhood possession to treasure a lifetime.

Schaaf's Fox Talbot
Larry Schaaf has put together an absolute benchmark of a book. To all of you who sat in the "college survey of art history," saw the 2" by 2" Fox Talbot image "The Soliloquy of the Broom" and wondered what the fuss was about; see this book. To all of you photographers who secretly wonder if photography is really art; see this book. One hundred images are reproduced with (no kidding) breathtaking quality and nuance. Each image is accompanied by a very readable account of how the image was produced and enough descriptive detail about the original image to satisfy an archeologist.

If you are a photo researcher or archivist; read Schaaf's notes on "The photographic artifact as historical map" (p. 22). It is clear, it is complete, it is definitive. I wish all histories and text books could read like this.

Beautifully Illustrated, Delicious, Easy Recipes
Risotto is a wonderful, filling, nutritious meal and can be simple or sophisticated, served at family meals or dinner parties. (It also makes great left-overs!) Whether you're browsing or planning a menu, this book will fulfill your appetite. Each recipe is beautifully illustrated and presented on a separate page with easy-to-follow instructions. Several of the recipes I've tried have become family favorites. Just serve with a fresh baguette, and some can be considered one-dish meals.

Southern Fried
Published in Hardcover by AMS Press (1962)
Author: William P. Fox
Amazon base price: $24.00
Average review score:

Should be 6 stars
OK they don't have a six star rated but this one really should BECAUSE the newer edition (SOUTHERN FRIED PLUS SIX) doesn't have the Jack Davis (from mad magazine) as the illustrator. That alone is worth another star! But the stories are super and I feel sorry for someone whose life hasn't been enriched by this book. BUT WHY BE DOWN WHEN YOU CAN MAKE YOUR LIFE HAPPY (MUCH HAPPIER THAN ANYTHING YOU CAN BUY ON TV) BY PURCHASING THIS BOOK!

Three Little Pigs and the Fox

Beautiful and cultural
I've read and reviewed most of the basic tellings of "The Three Little Pigs", as well as most of the variants. Here's my take on it.

This excellent little variant has that great Appalacian voice and elegant watercolor illustrations to go with it, just the tiniest bit cartoony (the pigs have cute heart-shaped noses). It is a gem: alone among all the tellings, it gives each pig a distinct personality! But the surprising thing is that this isn't really a "Three Little Pigs" story in the traditional sense. Its plot is original and intriguing, following how the first two pigs are caught by the "mean, tricky old drooly-mouth fox", and how the little runt, Hamlet, finally outwits him.

The Reader's Digest Children Songbook
This book is a wonderful compilation of many unavailable
children's songs and now makes my collection complete. My only
reservation is the lack of a CD or cassette as accompaniment to the book. This would be a fantastic aid for those of us who don't read music, but would like to use the book as a classroom teaching tool.

A quiet masterpiece about deserts
In this book William Fox writes about maps, the Great Basin desert, Native American Rock Art, ecology, ranchers, the many dimensions of water in the desert, Michael Heizer's landscape projects and history. The book is unique for the tone he strikes and the desert that he writes about. This is a detailed and articulate book that never bogs down.

He writes with a naturalist's eye and a poet's heart. The blurb on the dust jacket compares his writing to Barry Lopez. The comparison is apt and Fox has put together something here I will remember and re-read for a long time to come. He examines why deserts charm us and explores the Great Basin on foot and with eloquence. I loved it from the Introduction to the detailed Bibliography at the end. Read it!
