Finding applicants through newspaper advertising will be with us for a while, for some jobs. Even some of those jobs are now offered through major job boards. For the positions beyond low-skilled welders, fast-food burger flippers, and convenience store clerks, employers will increasingly use the internet to recruit. This shift shatters the myth that hiring is local; the web is world-wide. Recruiting is global.
OK, with this historical and future-focused concept in mind, how do we do this on-line recruiting? Foster's book tells us-step by step at a strategic level and at a tactical level. It is not a book for webmasters, recruiting site developers, or code programmers. This book delivers on the higher levels, providing company owners, executives, and managers a valuable insight into what needs to be done and why. Human resource executives will find this volume very helpful. Some HR managers will find it a great tool to open deeper discussion with their superiors; others will find it more valuable in their efforts to understand where their leaders are trying to go.
The book begins, appropriately, with some of the "big picture" of recruiting, then turns to the use of the internet. In Chapter 1, there is a list of stages to the process of e-recruiting: recruit your friends, create or enhance your organization's recruiting web site, attract the best candidates, find passive candidates, and assess your applicants. The organization of the book is different, which may throw off a reader expecting an expansion of the five stages. Foster explores various aspects of the recruiting website in Part Two, but Part Three is titled Advertise Your Job Openings. Part Four is Searching for Passive Candidates, but there is not a separate section on assessing applicants-which will be an increasingly important aspect of e-recruiting. You'll find a tremendous amount of valuable insight in these pages.
The book is seasoned with a wide range of resources, mostly presented (understandably) as website addresses. Some I recognized, others I'd heard of, and there were still some the author missed (like www.....com for recruiting communities); but, this is a rapidly-changing field. Many readers will find themselves a bit overwhelmed and confused as they read this book. So much information all at once! Yes, that's the reality; and it's a good lesson. Read the book cover to cover, then go back with a highlighter and a pad (or note-taking computer file) to design the right strategy for your company. You'll be reading about cutting-edge ideas and resources, so don't expect to grasp it all right away. Commentary on trends and processes is well interwoven with things to do. Expect to be inspired, stimulated, and fully-loaded with work to do.

the sole author of this book (as well as innumerable papers on this
subject in the scientific literature). While his prior book on
schizophrenia was clearly aimed at a professional audience, this
current one is eminently suitable for both lay and medical audiences.
It is up-to-the-minute in explaining this complex disease in cause,
diagnostic testing, and treatment. Physicians will find many useful
clues in making this difficult diagnosis and in how to structure
therapy. Of even greater value, this is the first down-to-earth, very
readable (and humorous) book to explain to families why this has
happened to loved ones. It is a very good book, and very well
written.

That's why I was so pleasantly suprised with this book. The writing is entertaining, intelligent and always realistic. That is EXACTLY how a person in their late teens, early twenties writes (I know, I'm a letter writer in that age group) and it is so refreshing to read an author who knows what she is talking about on the subject.
Judy Abbott is most certainly not a Pollyanna, she teases, gets angry and argues but she has a nice nature and always manages to patch things up. She is an orphan who writes to her mysterious benefactor whom she dubs "Daddy-Long-Legs". Because he is her fairy godmother for all purposes, she confides in him even though she knows he will never answer. The ending is marvelous with a great little twist. I think this book is great for girls 8-80 and am sorry I did not read it sooner
The protagonist, Jerusha (Judy) Abbot, an orphan whose name is picked off a tombstone and surname from the telephone directory,...remains one of the most believable and beautiful character portrayals in literature. Her sense of humour in the face of all odds, (a product of Webster's brilliant imagination and adept pen) kept me coming back to this book a countless number of times.
The superb narrative style, the book being a compilation of letters from a cheeky, unique woman growing up in the early part of this century to her benefactor who never replies, is stunning in it's currency to this day. It is hard to believe that a book, written almost over 90 years ago should still find an adoring audience. It deals with issues like women's independence, happiness, indentity and that old demon, 'love'! It is most definitely a "Classic". Rather like old wine it seems to have aged perfectly! I could go on forever, but will end by saying this is a MUST for every library and anyone who knows how good it is to be alive.
I am surprised that some people found a "twist" at the end of the book, I could guess the ending pretty early on. Anyway, its not the ending, but the individual letters that are the true gems in the book. I highly recommend this book for people that like character portrayals.
