The Social Capital Debate
I am purchasing this book after reading it--I have the libraries copy in front of me, but I need a copy to write in the margins and highlight. As a curious follower of Putnam's work on Social Capital, this book deepens the conversation and ideas surrounding the issue, most importantly asking questions about what do we mean by "social capital."

The book is a gathering of commentary from scholars on social capital and how it relates or may not relate to civil society. It is an academic's book. It is an important book for anyone who wants to consider Social Capital at a deeper level.

A forgotten chapter of the Vietnam story, grippingly told
A friend of mine was in the New England Resistance, but I never understood until now what he was going through in the late 1960s. Foley interviewed hundreds of draft resisters and others involved in their campaign to smash LBJ's "war machine" by filling the jails with young Americans who refused to hide out behind student deferments or CO status or to flee to Canada, and who at great peril to themselves stood up to the Pentagon and the Selective Service Act. Foley's account of the New England Resistance builds like a Greek drama, leading to the famous service in the Arlington Street Church at which hundreds of young men moved to the altar to burn their draft cards while tens of thousands of supporters stood in silence outside. I was in the crowd outside that day -- Foley's account of the Arlington Street Church service moved me to tears -- but I never understood until now that I'd witnessed the moment when the Federal Government lost its nerve. Foley captures the drama of a time of moral heroism that standard accounts of the anti-Vietnam War movement have ignored. After this book, it will never be forgotten again.

dissapointing
Because of the title The Femme Fatale, Famous Beauties Then and Now, I was expecting a sort of photographic history book. I would be very interested in seeing how the image of a Femme Fatale has changed over the years, from the glamourous pencil browed vixens of the 1920's to the much more volupt modern beauties. (Think pulp fiction novel cover vs. Catherine Zeta Jones) I would have liked to read up on how even though what is considered beautiful (and dangerous) has changed, the character of the Femme Fatale predominates our culture, in literature and film.
I really got the wrong book. Instead of what I was expecting, this book features celebrities made over to appear like they would in different time periods, and the photos are high quality, oversized and printed on slick glossy paper. Some of the transformations are very well done (the girl on the front cover is Julia Roberts, believe it or not) So the book is not without merit, but they could have done a lot more.
If I wanted to see pictures of Britney Spears, I'd just read People magazine.

Great Idea, mediocre execution
Much, if not all this material has been published elsewhere, so you may have seen it. However, it has not been presented together organized around the interesting concept that Julia Roberts, Elizabeth Hurley, Susan Sarandon, Britney Spears and a host of beautiful women are paying homage to women of a previous age. (Yes, that Britney Spears).

In an interview with a French magazine, the photographer described himself as awed or intimidated when Susan Sarandon showed up. He only relaxed when she took charge and he just responded to what he saw. The mutual respect shown by the professionals on both sides of the camera is what makes these images good.

This is not just a catalog of beatiful pictures of contemporary icons playing dress up. If it is authentic it makes a convincing statement about the power and stature of these famous modern women and a lot of not so famous all around us.

If you know a young woman who wants to be in the next book like this, show it to her. I have handed it to several young women I've photographed recently. "Oh, my God! Britney Spears is beautiful." "That can't be Claudia Schiffer." "Elizabeth Hurley scares me!" Isabella Rossellini as Betty Page is the show stopper, however.

The photography is as good as it gets, but the material added to hang it all together weakens the book. Some of it is completely contrived and bogus.

Next time let the women and the photographer do their work and let the readers draw the conclusions. Meanwhile a lot of wannabe photographers and young models have some catching up to do.

I just HAD to have it!
I have been a fetish model for almost two years, and a close photographer friend and myself are kicking off a new project which showcases high end fetish photographs. While my husband was searching for a poetry book in a Barnes and Nobles store, I snuck to the photography section to see if I could be inspired for this new peoject. My eye fell on this book immediately. I looked at no other book! The photographs are simply too beautiful for words, and I was heartbroken by the cover price... Reluctantly, I put it back on the shelf. When I came home however, I searched your site immediately and found a used copy in mint condition .... Obviously, I was nothing less than thrilled!

This book is based on the photography of hair, and showcases original photographs from the 1800's as samples. Serge Normant then re-creates these by using well known models and celebraties of today, dressing them in period clothing, changing their looks dramatically.

If you are a hairdresser, model, or photographer, you MUST own this book!

Natural means bleak?
This is another book I purchased from amazon.com, based on client's reviews. I hoped to get something exciting, but, was disappointed. This book presents a "natural home" as bleak and colorless. The dominating colors are white and green. I don't think nature has only these colors in store. What about the riches of spring, summer and fall colors, the reds, blues, violets, oranges to name a few? The author has an aesthetic eye for displaying pictures. But all in all, I am returning this book for a full refund. I am disappointed because I did not get my money's worth.

Look at the real picture
Colors/pigments originate from toxic heavy metals such as lead being red; purples or violets may contain both mercury and lead; yellow and orange may contain cadmium. You've heard of cadmium yellow with artists pigments. Additionally, darker, deeper as well as more fluorescent colors contain the more volatile organic compounds --VOC's.

Some of us have been poisoned with VOC's. I, for one. Carpets made of synthetic fibers and vibrant colors in the USA may contain lots of toxic nerve poisons which are volatile and off gas into the air in our homes, schools, and businesses.

On the other hand, the Natural Home is made up of white and greens because these colors contains less VOC's and hence, are better for our brain and nervous system. They bring us peace and tranquility. They keep our brains sharp and focused. We are not in a brain fog, as we may be with more toxic colors.

BTW, organic solvents, like those in pigments, are also amongst the misnamed inert ingredients in economic poisons that kill or cause harm to pests be they weeds; insects (including ants, roaches and mosquitoes; fungi, bacteria or other pesticides; fragrances, perfumes and colognes; natural gas, gasoline, and plastics, plus numerous other products with which we are being poisoned every day. No wonder white and green bring us peace and tranquility.

I salute The Natural Home by Tricia Foley, et al and encourage more people to read this book.

Serenity Now!
I too have moved often (26 times in 25 years). I am also a collector of old things, so I have accumulated a lot. I am also a Virgo which means I must have a connection with organic things. I am also originally from New Orleans which means I have a passion for the old, patinated, historical and verdant. Therefore, I loved Tricia Foley's philosophies. I have always loved color, but now I find myself wanting to unclutter and live simply. I've begun with my bed linens and clothing. Soon, my husband and I are relocating (another move!) and I want to incorporate much of the Natural Home in my new environment. While I will be unable to live with quite the sparcity of the homes pictured, the concept can certainly be modified to fit anyone's lifestyle. More? Less?, it's up to you. The book is a great starting place. Now I'm ordering Linens and Lace because I have chests full of antique linens,(my passion!), acquired thru family or collecting.

Example codes have too many errors
I wonder if the authors have actually compiled and run the codes. It simply won't work. Take Chapter 20 (RMI) as an example: 1. In class StockMarket, the line Quote q = (Quote)Naming.lookup("HelloServer"); should be Quote q = (Quote)Naming.lookup("///QuoteServer");

2. Class StockMarket should belong to package examples.ch20.bean, not package examples.chap20.bean;

Very intense yet easy to understand and use.
Here is a book that is designed to allow the reader to begin immediately programming JavaBeans. The combination of examples and source code in the text, as well as the accompanying CD allow the reader to develop sophisticated JavaBean applications quickly and easily. This book does an excellent job of explaining design concepts, methodologies, and uses for JavaBeans, as well as providing useful and appropriate tips and ideas for applications. The book explains the relationship of JavaBeans to different component Architectures, and problems associated possibly encountered within these environments. Some basic programming skills are required to adequately use this book, so it should be considered for an intermediate to advanced user level.

Written in a rush?
This piece of work is a terrible example of a book written with the main purpose of being first in the market and making the most money as fast as possible.

The JFC 1.2 platform was available from Sun early December 1998, and this 1400 page book was released in January 1999. The number of simple typos and pure errors are enourmous. Also, most internal references to the system uses the term "JDK 1.1" suggesting that the book is just a copy-paste operation from an earlier edition.

But the worst is this: One of the most important elements of the entire JFC is the very general GridBagLayout manager that is used to arrange UI components within windows and dialogs. Even if every aspect of the JFC claims to be covered in the book, this maybe most important part is not mentioned with a single word. An the reason is simple. THE AUTHOR DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT! In the reference part of the book the following explanaition is given. Quote: "GridBagLayout is, without a doubt the most powerful layout manager in the JDK 1.1. It allows for very specific customization of the screens look han feel. However, it is also very hard to use. Having worked with Java since December of 1995, I have only begun to understand GridBagLayout, and still find tools like Visual Cafe invaluable when building screens using this class."

I was tempted to take the book back to the store and ask for my money back.

WHY?
WASTE YOUR MONEY ELSEWHER

Thorough. Exhaustive.
Excellent source for gaining an understanding of the JFC. Covers the Swing, MVC, and other JFC concepts such as design patterns.
