Edith Wharton's Orientalism
Fans of Edith Wharton who are hoping to see her usual insightful wit will be disappointed with this book. Likewise will those hoping to learn something about the real Morocco. Instead, what this book provides is a fascinatingly nauseating example of racist, orientalist cliches: the eroticization, the emphasis on mystery, decreptitude, etc. One classic bit is the description of the souks full of "savages" "consumptive Jews" and "lusty slave girls." But my favorite is when a windstorm in the Djmaa el Fnaa suddenly appears, "stripping to the waist the slave girls scudding home to the souks." There are some peculiar twists to her vision of Morocco, but I won't go further because I'm hoping to publish my paper on this subject sometime in the near future. Buy this book if you are interested in such things. But first read Said's Orientalism, if this stuff is new to you. If you are planning to travel to Morocco, buy the Rough Guide and Culture Shock: Morocco.

Haunting Rachel

I'm not sure why I liked it...
Kay Hooper's writing style is stilted, almost juvenile, but somehow the fairly simple plot kept me reading through to the end. This is the first book of hers that I read, and it interested me just enough to read "After Caroline." The style is the same (unfortunately), and the plot is what I now believe is the Kay Hooper Formula. I'm not sure I would call it a thriller, but both books do have eerie /moments/ that prickle the back of the neck. Perhaps that's why she rates with me at all.

Within the first few pages you guess who did it!!!!
I will not repeat what is any many of the reviews. The "bad" guy in this one is so obvious that you guess who it is right off and think; no there will be all sorts of twists and turns. NOPE! He sticks out like a sore thumb. The author is terrible at conversations. They are so bad that you can finish the sentences like bad B movies. He is a line from the HERO "Jesus Christ on a Pony" Give me a break. The sad thing is that she creates likeable, interesting characters that you want to get to know. No originality to the story that was even slightly believable

Great Read
This being the first book that I have read by Kay Hooper, I was impressed! I am not one who like the "romance/mysteries" but this one definately caught my attention. The book had characters which in some ways you could relate to especially the Mercy & Nick relationship. The Rachel/Adam/Tom relationship was almost eerie. To have someone who could be your dead fiance's twin come into you life is most uimaginable but Kay Hooper found a way to make you believe. I found this book a great read and would recommend it to all!

Flash

This hurt me
Terrible dialogue. Everybody speaks in full sentences and is careful to tell each other everything the reader needs to know. Annoying hero and heroine. I did NOT fall in love with either of them. And the worst: a villian who explains the whole plot at the end of the book while stalking his victims.

Ouch!

Disappointed with FLASH
I have been a Jayne Ann Krentz fan for many years and have always enjoyed her Northwest U.S. locales the chemistry she creates between her main characters. However,FLASH was somewhat of a disappointment in one way - I figured out "who done it" very early in the book (and I usually do not). To me, that spoils some of the enjoyment. However, the book is still worth the read, but it will not be on my list of favorite Krentz books.

Entertaining,Funny and Heartwarming
I have read almost all of this author's stories, and this one is my favorite. It looks like I am in the minority here, but I was totally enthralled with Flash and I think it is one on the best stories by Jayne Ann Krentz.

Since many reviewers have sumarized the plot, I'll just say what I liked. Olivia is a great heroine. Smart, sarcastic and dedicated to her family. Jasper is one of the most endearing heroes I have read about. An all-around nice guy with some quirks to his character that make him very human to me. He is very neat and methodical, and he doesn't relate to Olivia's disorganized unmethodical tendencies. It was great reading about these two clashing, then working together to uncover a blackmailer, and realizing they are in love. I loved this story and must have read it at least ten times. My ablulute favorite book by Krentz.
