I learned bridge the way most people probably do-- some friends taught me how in college. After I'd been playing a year or two I bought this book which made the reasoning behind some of the rules I'd been following blindly and altered radically my own approach to teaching the game to others. It's also generally fun to read and one section flows nicely into the next. My one complaint: The edition I have is printed on very cheap paper and I'm not sure how long it will last. Hope it comes back into print soon!

I'm just a beginner learning Bridge by all different means - computer programs, books, and so on, but not with real people and not on-line yet. This book is teaching me more than any other book I've seen or read, and I'm really beginning to understand the game PLUS the reasons behind the bidding and play, thanks to this book. This book was written as an accompanying extract to a British Museum exhibit celebrating the bicentenary of its discovery, and accurately presents the important Rosetta Stone. This is achieved by means of outlining the Stone's history, controversy around its discovery and its deciphering which gave the key to understanding the hieroglyphs. Using this as his starting point, the author continues to explore the role, power and importance of writing in Ancient Egypt as well as its many aspects (such as scribes and the tools used) and its relation to art. Other decipherments (Linear B and Meroitic) are also considered in this book. Readable, enjoyable and very informative, accompanied by black & white illustrations, it is recommended for anyone interested in the Ancient Egyptian language.

For those expecting to receive a high quality catalogue of the British Museum's Rosetta Stone exhibition, you will not be disappointed. But as an added bonus, the essays are not pedantic and dull, but eloquent and informative. They detail not only the finding of the stone and its impact on Egyptology, but also include chapters on the development of the Ancient Egyptian language, the scripts, tools used to write, and the ways in which these reflect the Egyptian world view.

Richard Parkinson's writing style makes this a joy to read! I would recommend it not only to those interested in the exhibit (the photos are of excellent quality), but those interested in Ancient Egyptian language and Egypt in general.

Introduced to this book at National Naval Medical Center, although not the text we use at MUSC, I'm glad I found it, great buy for the cost.

I loved this book. My kids loved this book. It explains fear from the child's point of view so well that I could remember the same feelings from my own childhood 30 years ago. It is a good reminder to adults of how real a child's fear is and how running away doesn't solve the problem.

Toward the end of his life, Montana poet Richard Hugo wrote a detective/mystery novel that features a detective who is the antithesis of the tough, clipped speaking, hard drinking, noir detective so common in the American detective story. Al "Mush Heart" Barnes is a loveable, poetic, common man, a man with an eye for a good looking woman and a skill for solving murders. Barnes has moved to Plains, Montana in his retirement from the Seattle Police Department, and works as a Deputy Sheriff. Suddenly, two men are murdered by axe and Barnes' detective work takes him to Kooskia, Kamiah, and Orofino on Idaho's Clearwater River and then to the Portland metropolitan area, where he uncovers truths about an old murder, new murders, and some of his close friends. If you happen to enjoy Richard Hugo's poetry, his unmistakeable voice drives this novel and his lyrical writing and philosophical observations make this book an aesthetic delight.

Richard D. Fisher's coverage of the earth's canyons is breathtaking. If you are a world traveler, this guidebook is a must have! The first explorer to many of these canyon areas has done an extensive study of the terrain, local peoples, and wildlife. Many of the stories are first-hand accounts of his experiences in the canyons and with the local peoples. Richard's photography pulls you into the magnificent atmosphere of the surroundings. I highly recommend this guidebook for individuals headed to the canyons and for the armchair enthusiast. It doesn't get better than this!

The Fisher King is an excellent film. It stars Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl, and Amanda Plummer. These four bring Richard LaGravanese's script to life. See how it was done with this book, which includes the screenplay, an essay by the author, a short intro by Gilliam (the director), and interviews of Gilliam and Williams by journalist David Morgan. Also included are outtakes of the screenplay, B+W still shots of the film, and a list of the credits.

In the mid 1980s I bought the first edition of this book. It was a much smaller yet still beautiful edition. When the new edition came out in '94 I was quick to pick that one up. This new version is much expanded and elaborated. So what is this book? It is a combination of a travel guide, an ethno-historical book and a book on local botany, Indians and geology sprinkled heavily with gorgeous photographs. Richard Fisher has put decades of his life into making this flawless account of the area. Whether you are visiting the national parks of Mexico by road, off-road or railroad, you will need this book. I have used this book many times to research an area before going there. The book will take you to lost mission churches, huge waterfalls, off-world looking landscapes and everywhere in between.

If you have a child of any age, ignore Horn's review and get this book! Maybe if enough people try to get it used, they'll bring it out of the graveyard and reprint this charming and exceptionally well-written and touchingly illustrated book. This book's message of caring, forgiveness, dedication, and love comes out every time I read this with my children! The fancifulness of the story only reinforces the important message within, and makes the heartbreaking conflict in the middle that much more redemptive in the end! If you want to know what's wrong with our society, it's that books this good don't get read to every kid by their parents! This one ranks among the top stories for kids of all time, and should be given it's due. Do yourself and your kids a favor and GET THIS BOOK!
