Surprise!
Who doesn't love those Little People? Your favorite Little Person will be screaming and laughing in anticipation of what is under the next flap in this book. Fisher Price, as usual, had Little People in mind when they made these sturdy lift flaps - they will last much longer than your average lift the flap book. This book is a terrific springboard to a shopping trip with your little one - or playtime with Little People toys. It is a steal at less than $4.00!

A Little People book perfect for little people
For those of you already familiar with the Fisher-Price Little People, this adorable book will fit right in to your little person's world. Its small size, colorful illustrations and flaps to lift on each page will delight any little one, and the rhyming text makes it fun to read for the caregiver. The horse, pig, cow, sheep, chicken and farmer are mirror images of the characters from the Little People Red Barn toy (Fisher-Price), and under each flap is printed the sound that each animal makes. So it is a fun book to teach or re-enforce animal sounds to your infant or toddler. I highly recommend this cute little book.

Sensory Integration: Theory and Practice
This was one of the few books available at the time my son was diagonosed with SI. The book was invaluable to me at the time. Understand the book is a theory and practice text, and is not written with the layman in mind. However, I did gain more insight into SI with the book. It helped me understand a lot of the reasons behind my son's behaviors. It also helped me better understand the need for the therapy he was receiving, and why things affected him the way they did. I would recommend this book to other parents who are as perplexed as I was. It helps with a few more pieces of the puzzle.

Understanding physiologic function
I am a music therapist specializing in work with Autistic and other diagnosed children. I have just completed a book titled:
Music Therapy, Sensory Integration and The Autistic Child, currently in publication at Jessica Kingsley Publishers. It is filled with physiologic information as that relates to the work of music therapy. I have used the Fisher book as a reference and found it accurate, concise, and well presented, and it is one of the physiologic references in my own bibliography. Any therapist working with sensory integration issues must investigate the physiologic implications in coordinated hearing, seeing, sensing. For that information, I found this book clear and direct in helping lay readers and professionals alike to understand physiology. My own book follows similar progressions from presenting physiologic information to demonstrating, through case examples, how sensory integration implicates the work of music therapy. I recommend this book for clinicians, educators, caregivers. My own book will be available in late 2001.

Sensory Integration:Theory and Practice
Even with forty years of experience in the field, I found this book insightful. It is written to enlarge existing understanding of sensory integration without intimidating the reader. The wealth of knowledge can help not only the new graduate, but also the more experienced practitioner.

Common Sense
This book is a good start if you have no idea how to go about writing a professional paper. If you have written long term papers in the past and have an academic advisor, this book may not be the one for you, but if you are on your own and have no idea what you are supposed to do... why not.

A practical book for the sciences
As someone who works privately with students, helping them with dissertations and theses, I highly recommend this book. When students in the various fields of science contact me in regard to assistance with their dissertation or thesis, I recommend that they use this book as a reference. As stated in the title, this book provides a step-by-step guide and anticipates and answers the questions that students have about the dissertation or thesis in science.

the thesis writing bible
This book covers all aspects of writing a thesis or dissertation. The author is an experienced scientist and her PhD students are reknowned for their well written work. There are even tips on those lessons at school that you always fell asleep in - grammar! I don't know how I would ever have got through things without this book. An ironic sense of humour makes it all most readable.

Stern Men
Published in Hardcover by Houghton Mifflin Co (22 May, 2000)
Author: Elizabeth Gilbert
Amazon base price: $24.00
Average review score:

Clever Author
Elizabeth Gilbert has written an unusual and readable book. She embellishes a simple tale of feuding Maine islanders with eccentric characters who, improbably but successfully, strive to get along (or not) in their peculiar social system.

Ruth, the protagonist in the story, is a blunt-spoken,independent, sometimes foul-mouthed young woman who has no trouble speaking her mind to the various fogies and other adults who all seem to know what is best for her. Her fresh, sarcastic, and witty responses make her come alive to the reader and provide plenty of laughs.

The novel does drag at about midpoint and delivers a fast and implausible ending that seems to have been thrown together without any preparation for the reader. Still, this is a refreshing story and a thoroughly enjoyable summer read. And the lobster facts at the beginning of each chapter are interesting as well as tied to the behavior of the book's characters. This one is worth your time and $$$.

A Wonderful Delight
Stern Men is just a great read, a highly enjoyable novel. Elizabeth Gilbert gives us a wonderful, well told story. She starts by describing the known history of two small islands off the coast of Maine: Courne Haven and Fort Niles. She quickly focuses in on the difficult birth of a baby girl, Ruth Thomas, in the late 1950s on Fort Niles. A few pages later, we meet her as an 18 year old returning home to Fort Niles after graduating from boarding school in Delaware. The story of Stern Men mainly concerns itself with what Ruth does that summer--she spends time with her idiosyncratic friends, is reuinted with her mother, who lives off the island, and finally, falls in love. While this is not a fast paced novel, I still felt compelled to read it because the story is so engaging. Ruth and her friends were in my thoughts when I was not reading the book and I couldn't wait to return to Stern Men. The book is enjoyable, the story is funny and the characters are nutty, yet still believable. I highly recommend this book.

Solid, Engrossing, Excellent
A really fine new novel which I picked up after reading a favorable review in the NYT---and I've enjoyed the read. It's the story of an island off the coast of Maine (a fictionalized Vinalhaven, I think), mostly about the coming-of-age of Ruth Thomas, tenously-descended from the granite-quarry-owning rich family which once ran the island. It reminds me somewhat of the Bennett's Island novels by Elisabeth Ogilvie, but Stern Men has a much more modern setting and feeling. We certainly hear enough about the history of the island, its rivalry with its neighbors, and the ongoing "lobster wars" of its fishermen, but the characters are so intriguing and eccentric, the storytelling so solid, that it certainly never feels like an historical novel--nor does it feel like a romanticizing of a "vanishing way of life" and all that bushwah. These folks are grittily involved in making a buck and getting on with their lives.

I liked it as well as The Beans of Egypt, Maine or The Funeral Makers or Strong for Potatoes, all fine novels dealing with middle-to-lower-class Maine characters. A welcome addition to the genre.

The negotiaton explained
Very decent book, with loads of good cases. It helps you understand the other side's position and options, and guides you to 'reasonable' negotiation.

Conquering Conflict
How many times we have been in a conflict with others may it be of a personal or business in nature. I find this text extremely useful in punctuating the loopholes and pitfalls to avoid in a conflict and means to manage it. When in a conflict we are always trying to send a message to the other party suggesting them that there is something else they should be doing. The text will help in the appropriate way to transfer this message across.

To identify the root cause of a conflict Fisher suggests that one must not be responsive but purposive. As an example when two children are fighting the adult who breaks them apart may ask "why" they hit each other. To this the most likely response may be "because he hit me first". But that response only explains the cause of the fight not its root cause.

Another key ingredient suggested by Fisher is keeping in perspective the situation and mind set the other side is facing. In a ball game it may be easy to not agree with a team change decision a coach has made. But understanding the dynamics and pressure faced by him, we are then in a better position to critique if the decision made was correct. If we had a chance him our opinion this added perspective can aid us to be sensitive to his situation.

Fisher believes that understanding how others view a conflict is knowledge that gives us strength. It enhances our ability to influence them. Through exploring and motivations leading up to a conflict we can increase our understanding of where their perceptions comes from.

No matter how much we disagree with someone we need influenced. It is extremely important that we maintain a level of dialogue; so that we may not push the party away and be faced with a situation we never wish to face. After the overthrow of the shah of Iran in 1979, the U.S unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the government for a hundred executions conducted by the new government. Ironically the U.S had overlooked the thousands of executions of political opponents done during the Shahs regime. It was in the best interest of the U.S to keep Iran engaged and maintain some working relationship to avoid Iran being driven to the Soviet block and preventing the hostage crisis.

This is not a book of answers and solutions to conflicts. The tools suggested in this book are intended to ask or simulate better questions. Better questions are not about who is right or who is wrong, or about one-hot solutions, but the process of dealing with conflicting views about right and wrong and for dealing with the inevitable changes that lie ahead. For e.g. Fisher suggests that instead of starting with the question "What shall I do?" you might want to start with such questions as "What would I like someone else to do?" and "What could I do that would make it easier for them to do it?".

If You Liked Getting to Yes....
If you liked Getting to Yes, you'll appreciate this one too. To me, this book is really about how to think clearly about complex situations. As the authors demonstrate, too often we don't think through the long term consequences of our actions. We react to the past without thinking how our actions will then be interpreted by those we seek to influence. Great book.
