Charles Finney is often (and wrongly) known as the "great revivalist" of the 19th century. Unfortunately, his "revivals" were based on unorthodox and heretical beliefs. Regardless of how many "converts" he made, Finney deceived many with his unsound theology and may even have caused substantial spiritual harm among those who accepted his message. Those who support Finney should realize that he never held to the essential Reformational doctrines laid out by Martin Luther and John Calvin. He also denied the penal-substitutionary view of the atonement for some legalistic "gospel" that cannot save anyone from the penalty of sin. If one wants a good book on revival and evangelism try J. I. Packer's "Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God".

Another book on how Finney was a "great evangelist". Obviously, those who support Finney and his theology don't have a clue on what is orthodox/Protestant/Reformational theology. Finney was a maverick who had no theological supporters. Obviously, if you deny the cardinal doctrine of the Reformation (justification by faith alone) who would ever want to support your cause unless you believe in self-salvation apart from God's grace and Christ's perfect atonement.
