This is a WONDERFUL book!
I was first drawn to this book because of the gorgeous cover, but I soon learned that the inside is as good as the outside. The author uses lush descriptions so you feel like you are in the book with the characters. When you read this book you will be transported to a magical island where the tropical trees are lush and green and the air is hot, wet, heavy, and full of exotic scents. The sun always beats down and the ocean is a vivid turquoise. The plot is certainly fresh with twists and turns and a wonderful ending! What characters will you meet? You'll just have to read it! I read this book for the first time several years ago, and I still love to read it, even though I am now 16.

This is my favourite book!
Even though I am 15 years old, this has to be my absolute favourite book. It is filled with great imagination and adventure. I recommend it to anyone who needs something happy and adventurous to read.

Katie and her Dad liked this book a lot.
We think Tashi is a excellent book for all ages. Katie is nine and her younger sister is four, and they both liked the book a lot, as did their parents. The stories are not too spooky but exciting. We liked the charming "old country" that Tashi was from, created mostly by the pictures. Tashi has pointy hair and earings and wears a really cool jacket and boots. The houses in the "old country" look Japanese? Chinese? It's hard to say. It looked like a really nice place to live except for the warlords, baron, giants, flying houses, pirates and demons. We got swept up in the magical ride of "The Big Big Big Book of Tashi". We definetly plan to read "Tashi and the Dancing Shoes".

I only wish there were more.
I bought this book to read to my 4 year old son, who is ready for stories with more meat on the bones (a higher word-to-picture ratio and stronger plot) than most picture books. He loved it -- he was so sad the last night when he said "Dad, you forgot to put the bookmark in!" and my husband told him they had read the last story. We'll read it again and again, if his 6 year old sister (who reads at a 3rd grade level) hasn't run off with it -- again! It is great for kids ready for stories with real plot, but not for too-mature themes. Particularly good for boys, just because there are so few for them at this stage; a lot of the other stories in this niche are kind of princessy -- which my daughter loved, but which wasn't right for my son.

Undiscovered Treasure
Tashi is a really funny book about a little boy who has adventures like Lord of the Rings, but not as scary. He tells the stories to his best friend Jack, who then tells them to his parents. I really like that at the end of each book, when Jack thinks everyone is safe and happy, Tashi always says, Until the Giant (or Bandit, or Dragon, or Ghost or witch...) comes! I recommend this book to everyone- it's a really good book to read out loud- I read it to my parents and even my bad brother liked it!

Borrowed Light by Anna Fienberg
Being a Christian and a human being with morals,I greatly disagree with the author's obvious choice to take abortion so lightly. In the book 'Borrowed Light' sixteen year old Callisto May finds herself pregnant with seemingly no one to turn to. She does not for one second consider letting her baby live and give it up for adoption. Her excuse: "Oh I'm just a timid little girl,I can barely take care of myself I can't possibly go through the trouble to have a baby, I just need a second chance! did her baby have a second chance? No, it didn't even have a first chance. This book was also VERY unrealistic. It appears that the author did very little research on the matter of abortion, or "termination" as she says. Even in this day and age it's difficult for a sixteen year old girl to just prance into an abortion clinic, without parental or guardian consent. In the end of the book, Callisto shows no remorse for the life she has terminated, she's just 'So happy to have another chance!'I thought this book was written in very childish manner I advise all who read this review not to read this book. Pass it on.

Borrowed Light
This is a truly excellent book. Anna Fienberg deals with the 'problem' of teenage pregnancy sensitively and her wonderful description of Callisto's life is great to relate to. Overall, a great read.

Wow! You should read it.
This book was one of those books that you just can't put down. It's clever, interesting and amazing. I really loved it. It has to be one of my favourite books I have read. Me and my friends talk about what would happen if we got pregnant, well this book is about a girl who has to face this reality, and what she is going to do about it, have an abortion or have the baby. Its sometimes sad, scary and frightening but true to life. The feelings and emotions that the characters feel are so real. The writing is wonderful and sometimes confronting. I could even feel them myself. I recommend this to everyone, teenagers, adults, young and old, women and men. I love this book and you should definately read it.

Misleading for children
This book is about how a group of Vikings comes to accept a too-hot-to-touch young boy. However, their acceptance isn't due to a change for the better in themselves, but is rather learning to take advantage of the boy for their own benefit. The story also implies that one's own self-worth is dependent on acceptance by others.

It could also be very misleading for children for several other reasons. First of all, the Vikings in the story don't know about fire! Thus the author creates an artificial need for the boy. Also, the boy somehow floats in a short period of time from a tropical island to the Viking village. Thus geography is also abused. Finally, the boy is born out of a volcano and is hot enough to boil water. You decide about that one. While fantasy is certainly a common part of fiction, using a real group - Vikings - demands a certain amount of historical accuracy, especially as this will be the first time many children have heard of them.

The pictures are fairly nicely done, though, and the bizarre sequence of events is certainly captivating for youngsters. The question is, what are they learning?

A wonderful book about getting along with others.
Poor Hector! He's so lonely, but finds a friend in the end. My preschoolers in my class ask to read this story over and over, they love it! It's a nice story and addresses tolerance of differences and friendship.
