Wynken, Blynken, & Nod is an enchanting, magical tale
that is as captivating as it is beautiful. It's a wonderful bedtime tradition, for both children and parents. This amazing poem is a timeless classic; there's always something new to discover from the entrancing journey of our trio of fishermen! It's perfect for people of all ages. Come along, and bring somebody you love on the voyage on Wynken, Blynken, and Nod; you won't regret it!

A Classic Must Have for Every Child
I was not introduced to this poem until I was 18. We were performing it in concert as a part of Midge of Gold which is a collection of children's tales set to music. I fell in love with it and when I found out it was an actual book, it became one of the first gifts I give to parents and children. The melody is one that stays with me and it's a great lulaby. This book is worth more than what you will pay for it. I have not met one person who read it as a child and didn't love it. The poem and illustrations are wonderful. Buying this book for your child, or any child, is a great investment.

An incredible and beautiful book, always to be remembered
This is a book that my father grew up on, and after having kids of his own, read it to us. As we grew up, this book had somehow disappered, and, having missed it so much, set upon looking for it on the internet. This is a beutiful children story, but not only for children... Don't miss it!

Plants and Animals of the Pacific Northwest by E.N. Kozloff
This is the best PNW plant and animal identification book on the market (and I have lot of such i.d. books). Lots of really good color pictures and detailed b/w's. Informative text on life history/cycles. Good index and well-organized. Great for helping children get going on school projects (the Latin names are there, but the text is plain English, flows well, and provides information that interests ordinary persons of all ages who enjoy the out-of-doors). Would make a nice gift for someone new to the area or otherwise interested in the topic.

What a beautiful book!
I fell in love with wild plants at the tender age of 11 when I went to camp with my 5th grade class. We did plant identification and I became intrigued by all the wonderful plants in the NW. WHen I got home I poured through my mom's copy of this book. I had been seeing it on our coffee table since I was like a tot! I fell in love with plants. This book has beautiful color pics of all kinds of wonderful plants and animals. It's awesome!

A key step to understanding the dynamics of clonning
The cellular relationship between vegetable and animal is explained by the research Marais did in the wilds of Africa in the first part of the last century. It links creation of all multi cellular life and allows us to understand why clonning is possible. The presentation of the material is keen and incisive and will be one of those books that will remain as a beacon of revelation along any readers path. I cannot understand why this book is not compulsory reading in every education programme.

Continues and finishes where Darwin left off.
Continues and finishes where Darwin left off. An absolutely fabulous book! Why this book is out of print is a mystery - it should be compulsory reading for every member of the human race interested in why we're on the planet and how we've managed to stay on it... and what to do next.

I could envision myself in each scenario!
Whit has portrayed his adventures with herps with amazing wit. Each chapter begins with a narrative about an episode that his zest for "research" placed him in. I read a couple of different chapters to a friend over the phone (imagine an alligator in the cab of your truck!) and we both laughed so hard we were in tears. At the end of each tale is a lesson in sound zoology. Most field biologists will recognize themselves in this book.

Great book. Who'd think an herpatologist could be so funny?
Whit Gibbons gives a truly funny account of his time as a graduate student and professor, chasing reptiles through the southern US and abroad. It's funny, it's informative. This is no textbook, but rather tales of life and animal research.

Sailing Off to Dreamland
This beautiful classic nursery rhyme by Eugene Field has comforted children off to sleep for generations and has endured as a favorite for good reason. The lovely, peaceful verse sings to us of a river of crystal light, a sea of dew, twinkling foam, nets of silver and gold, a moon that laughs and a wind that ruffles the waves. The illustrations that Johanna Westerman has supplied are the perfect compliment to this treasured story and are executed in watercolors using mostly sea green, blue and torquoise to create a moonlit vision of dreamland as the three children, Wynken, Blynken and Nod, set sail with their cat in a charming boat shaped like a wooden shoe. This is a soothing and gentle bedtime story and I highly recommend it.

A comfort book
My father used to recite this poem to my sister and I all the time. It's truly a beautiful poem that can still bring a sense of tranquility. This version is beautifully illustrated. I bought it for my nephew when he was a baby and since he was about 6 months, he was enthralled by the pictures.

The Best Possible For Profit Enterprise
"The Best Possible Sawmill" was published in 1996. I regret that it took me until 2001 to discover this book, which could have been titled "The Best Possible For Profit Enterprise" as the book is a gold mine for any businessperson with P&L responsibility. Using the sawmill as a metaphor, the book explains The Profit Gap (the difference between a company's current and potential earnings) and how to narrow this gap and increase profit by using Linear Programming technology to guide a manager's decision making about what markets to compete in, what products to make and sell, and what vendors and business partners to use. I recommend this book to any person with P&L responsibility.

Actor lauds poet
This is a sweet and charming and humorous book, privately printed, written by a famous actor (founding president of Actors Equity) to his dear friend, the poet. There is much amusing correspondence between the two over the years. I have several copies, because Francis Wilson was my grandfather.

ID only
Do not expect more than ID from the book. It is excellent at ID but that is all you will get for sure. I bought it for ID and it serves the purpose very well. One must also question the range maps since as explained in the text of the book they are compromised.

Finishing the Trilogy
It might interest the reader of this review (since your looking at the book) to know that while fresh water only represents about 1% of the available aquatic habitat on earth over half of the known species of fish live in it. I'll leave it up to you to find out why. Peterson Field Guides have a winning formula, find an expert, set them up with a good illustrator and see what comes out. This book finishes the trio that covers all of the fishes likely to be encountered by a North American fisherman, diver or naturalist. Like the Fishes of the Atlantic Coast and the Fishes of the Pacific Coast it is well organized, well written, all inclusive (of species) and as informative as space will allow. If you are curious about fishes in general or encounter fresh water fish with any kind of regularity you owe it to yourself to find out what they are. And, if you live in North America you should have this book.

A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes
This book has informed me on the many fishes I catch ranging from California to New York. Every year when I go down to Arkansas I alwyas bring it with me on my fishing journeys so that I no whati am catching. It has over 700 illistrations and over 300 maps. In all of my searching for book this has been the most helpful book I have used. I recamend buying it for yourself. It will help you alot.

Poems of Childhood

Touching and memorable.
Some of these poems are for children. Some are merely about children. Some are for grown ups who love children. Some are for children who have no idea how dear they are to the grown ups in their lives.

Despite having had my copy of 'Poems of Childhood' for ten years, I know absolutely nothing about Eugene Field save what I can infer from the poems in this collection. From their recurring themes, and the order in which they appear, I can guess that Field lost a child who was very precious to him . . . was slowly healed of his grief by the love and presence of other children . . . and was given a second chance with the birth of a new baby.

There are about 15 poems that hint of that lost child and a handful that juxtapose sleep and death, making me wonder if the baby died in its sleep. Other sad poems are merely wistful about beloved children who have grown up. Thankfully, there are just as many happy poems as sad ones: cheery verses about toys, imaginary creatures, and playground games. Field also wrote several 'lullabies' that are perfect for rocking children to sleep, whether or not they are put to music.

I don't know any other poet who has brought such dignity to "babytalk." Toddlers in his poems are called names like Pittypat, Tippytoe, Googly-Goo and Luddy-Dud. His imaginary fairies include Amberglee, Daisybright and Pilfercurds. Moreover, I'm sure that no other collection of children's poems has this many terms for "dreamland"--Blinkiwink garden, Shut-Eye town, and Hushaby street, to name a few.

Though Field could be accused of writing the same poems over and over again, most of his verses have such distinctive _personalities_ that this is not entirely true. What they _all_ have in common is his delicate touch--yes, even the ones in which his voice turns rustic and homey--that has endeared him to children and grown ups alike.

Imaginative and memorable poetry for all
This was a book from my childhood and which I have searched for many years. So happy to find it at Amazon's. Maxfield Parrish, the illustrator , with his imagination was the right choice for this book of poetry. Eugene Field's love of children and the sadness which was part of his life makes the poetry memorable.

A beloved classic
I received this book as a gift when I was about 8 or 10, and it was one of my favorite all time books. The poems are dear and the illustrations are simply magical. This volume had poems I had heard before, like "Winken, Blinken, and Nod", and many that were new to me. Over the years, when I had to memorize a poem for school, it was always one of these I chose -- "Jest 'Fore Christmas", "The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat", and "the Dickey bird is singing in the Amphalula tree."
