Edible Wild Plants of the Prairie: An Ethnobotanical Guide

Excellent book;entirely usable in the field.
I think this is an excellent book; well-written, with excellent translations of Indigenous People's names for these plants. (I am both D-/Lakota, speak, read, and write my languages; and forage for plants.) IF I have a criticism, it is (1) that the book should have a sequel with another 130 or so plants including both food and medicinal uses, and (2) I would wish for GOOD, SHARP color photographs of the plants as harvested AND as you would see them if you were looking closely for them where they usually grow. The sketches are extremely well done but there is nothing like color to show the differences between plants that appear similar (at least until your eye is honed). Tinpsila, for example, has a near look-alike that grows in the same area where I hunt, and it is hard to teach novices the difference in person, harder from a book with B/W sketches. I like the facts that (1) she includes the medicinal uses of at least some of the plants in the book; (2) she notes the spiritual/cultural perspectives of us Indigenous People, and (3) she doesn't make any majority-culture or "Christianity Way" comments on our Traditional perspectives when she does this, nor does she refer to our Traditional beliefs in the past tense. Our Traditional Ways and beliefs are still very much alive and being lived; even if the number of us practicing them is not all of our People at the present time. If I could have only one book to take with me if I were to be "lost" somewhere, I think it would be this one.

A Guide to Wildflowers in Winter: Herbaceous Plants of Northeastern North America

Beautifully organized and illustrated
This book is very intelligently organized. Ms. Levine chose to order the identification keys in a manner that would be most helpful, rather than strictly by botanical taxonomy. This makes sense given that the winter remains of plants do not track their taxonomy. The illustrations are also a joy just to look at.

Classy cards, cakes and gifts
This isn't a book for kids parties or cards. This has projects for the ladies you love and also men. Imaginative cards, and I love the mosiac look of a cake with hard candy on top. I think the painted desk accessories would be more for a teenager. The cupcakes decorated with rolled gumdrops (bees etc OR fruits) are my favorite! A little bit of everything: from card to cake making to a smattering of gifts. Fun book.

Superb Christmas Stocking book for the expert stitcher
I have made 5 or 6 of these stockings and always get rave reviews about them. I did the sewing room stocking for myself and the little girls room for my daughter. I wish that BH & G would also do one with easier stockings. I know the the original folder patterns for these have another stocking with them and they are much easier for a beginner. It would be nice if they put those in a book.

Definitely Some Pretty Stitching Going On With This Book!!
I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but I had to for this BH&G gem, especially since one hasn't been written as of yet. SOMEone has to let cross stitch fanatics know what they're missing! :)

This book is chock full of gorgeous charts for a variety of topics such as nuptials, love, home, samplers, florals, and hearts, just to name a few. Each one is printed in color and accompanied by clear instructions, as well as a materials and supplies list. In addition, each project has been beautifully stitched and photographed for inspiration.

There's a particular project I consider just one my many favorites, as well as probably the most challenging, called "THE FLOWER SHOP," in which the design is worked on two pieces of fabric and utilizes a combination of several different stitches (besides those of cross stitch) to arrive at a pretty spectacular piece of work. I was both excited, and I must admit, a tad intimidated to try it. If a cross stitch book can arouse this type of reaction out of me, I consider it a definite "keeper" for my library.

"...STITCHING PRETTY..." also contains patterns with instructions for the use of metallic and silk threads, a variety of beads, ribbon, etc. Speaking for myself, I love it when cross stitch books include patterns which call for the use of these items as part of the design, for they only enhance what I am capable of creating with just thread alone.

I happen to adore books with projects dedicated to the different skill levels of counted cross-stitch, especially those geared toward the more experienced stitchers. Very rarely do I see cross stitch books containing patterns for intermediate/advanced stitchers and in my opinion, there should be a lot more of them.

If you're brand new to cross stitching and are just learning the basics, though it DOES include "how-to" illustrations for all of the stitches required to do each project, this book will still probably be a bit too advanced for you. However, if you plan on sticking with it, please purchase the book because I'm sure it will serve as nothing less than an inspiration for you to continue with the craft.

If you're already an intermediate to advanced stitcher, purchasing this book will result in smiles and excitement, as the most troublesome thought you might have is trying to figure out which design you'd like to stitch first!

P.S. Merely just a suggestion...with each chosen pattern, you may want to copy it on a photo copier prior to stitching. It's a very nice quality book and I'm sure you won't want to "age" it prematurely with constant handling. Happy Stitching!! :)

A Terrific Handy, Water Resistant Field Guide!
This pocketsize beginner's spiral-bound field guide is both useful, utilitarian, and beautiful. The cardstock paper is coated to protect against the omni-present NW drizzle, so you can take it with you when doing plant searches. Her 3 1/2" by 5" photos are some of the best I have seen. They are clear and plainly show important identifying details of the plants. She also lists the Tlingit names for some of the plants, and has a personable, straighforward writing style. She has both Volume 1 and 2. Both are excellent. ...

Nice book, but not *just right* for all stitchers

Small designs on every subject and for every occassion. The designs can be used well on household items, to decorate clothing, for ornaments, bookmarks and small gift bags and tags. Color charts. Chapters include:

Florals; For Little Ones (children); Symbols of Love; Christmas Fun; Santas and Snowmen; Borders and Patterns; Country Patterns; Americana; Year-Round Holidays; Nature Designs; Animals; Alphabets and Numbers; Sports, Professions and Pastimes; Cross-Stitch Basics; From Start to Finish (tips and techniques); Specialty Stitches; Patterns & Instructions; Extensive Index

This book is perfect for the stitcher that likes to take various motifs, and put them together in her own way rather than for the stitcher that likes to have a complete project to stitch and finish "just like the picture." I like the myriad of designs, but find that when I use the book, I need to make a working copy that I enlarge to make reading the charts easier. I've used some of the Borders and Patterns for creating bookmarks. There are lots of great idea starters here.

If you're like me . . . you'll love it!
From reading the other reviews here, I guess I'm what you'd call a "beginning stitcher"! I haven't got a huge cross-stitch library, and this book (a gift from my Mom) is GREAT for me! The number of the designs is terrific, and the varied topics, too (flowers, kids' motifs, alphabets, holidays, etc.) really make it useful. I love flipping through and finding something to go on a baby bib, hand towel, or other gift (the designs, being small, are a great fit!). But the main reason I like this book is that the actual designs are REALLY NICE--meaning classy! How many times have you dismissed a cross stitch book because the designs were just too tacky or choppy? Why do so many designers "countrify" everything, or make the same blocky-looking bunnies and ducks over and over? I'm so picky, but this book satisfies my tastes--good stuff here! For example, the flower section is so pretty, they've got me stitching flowers all over (and I'm not a real flowery type!). So, if this sounds like you--GET this book NOW!

A must have for every cross stitcher
I found this book while looking for some holiday gift ideas and bought it because it has everything! Most of the charts are perfect for small gifts like ornaments, gift bags and bookmarks. The borders, flower patterns and fun alphabet patterns are easy to combine for larger projects as well. All you need is a little imagination and some graph paper and you can create your own fun projects based on the designs in this book.

The Career Guide for Creative and Unconventional People

Wonderful book for conventional people with small ambitions
If the thought of spending the rest of your life working for somebody else doesn't horrify you, then this is the book you need to improve the way you're making your living. It can give you some amazing insight to who you are and what you need, tens of job ideas and general encouragement for finding your own way in the life.

If you aim higher than simply finding a more attractive job, forget the book. It's not for you.

Now, let me tell you about the book itself. Carol Eikleberry obviously worked hard on it. She has given her best to make the book as appealing and interesting as possible. However, every time I open and read it, I just can't help the feeling that the career advisor Eikleberry is much, much better than the writer Eikleberry. If you have a chance to talk to her in person, I advise you to do it. Besides of the obvious point that the author pays very little attention to the possibility of being one's own boss, she also concentrates too much on her own type of unconventionality. I fell in a pretty different category in her personality test and there's hardly any advice for my type in the book. That's what I meant by saying that the book is for conventional people with small ambitions.

Now, I can well understand that Carol Eikleberry had the largest possible audience in mind while writing the book. Surely, she knows from her solid professional experience which types are more frequent. Probably I'm just too different from an average unhappy American. I really can't blame her. But I can return the book - in fact, I did, for it was useless for me.

The two good things in this book are a very interesting personality test - a kind you probably haven't seen before, and tens of job ideas, some of which might be pretty surprising for you. Otherwise, it's just plain mediocre. It well deserves three stars.

Insight into and Understanding of the Creative Job World
I highly recommend this book to any person who has even a sliver of creativity and feels that there must be something else out there besides the typical 9 to 5 drugery. Good news, there is! Carol Eikleberry's book is not a "Follow these 5 steps to obtain your perfect job" guidebook. What is does offer, however, is an overwhelming amount of promising insight, advice, and support for creative people uncertain of their career future. From an analysis of the creative personality in the workplace to real life examples of those who have made it, this book delivers hope to the weary and gives us the tools to begin on our career journey. It is The Career "Bible" for unconventional people!

The Parachute for Artists and Other Creative Types
After reading this book people are better equipped for the career search, and they feel better about doing it. This book not only provides ideas and resources for the career hunter, it goes a step further and explains the whys behind the challenges ahead. The listing of careers suitable for artistic types is interesting and helpful. This book fills a needed gap and would be excellent reading for high school students and their parents, or any other person seeking meaningful employment.
