Barbara McClintock Alone in Her Field
This is a terrific book! I read it with my 9 year old daughter and 7 year old son. The story describes the personal integrity and strength of Dr. McClintock, both as a child and as a adult. It describes the difficulty of a girl in the 1920's who doesn't aspire to be a docile, married, domestic woman. As an adult, she is intellectually brilliant but has difficulty getting recognition for her discoveries. Thirty years after her most significant discovery, she receives a Nobel Prize for it. The books reads well, lets the reader feel the emotion of McClintock's difficulties AND gives an indepth enough explanation of her genetic research so my 9 year old could understand it and want to know more about it. It was not condescending - didn't oversimplify the concepts.

An informative, fun, but sometimes scary pop-up/action book.
If your kids like pop-up/action books, this one is full of things to play with and see. There are lots of flaps to look under, things to move, and creatures popping out of the pages. However, some of the content includes animals hunting other animals, and some of the animals in this book can be scary. (A big tarantula, bats, coyotes, a scorpion, a rattle snake, etc.) I was a little nervous when I first looked through the book, but my son (2 1/2) loves it and was not afraid of it. He reads it over and over, and shows me what is behind every rock, bush, and cactus. I would recommend it with the caution that it could be scary for some kids.

If you love wildflowers and live in the D.C. area get it!
This book is a neccesity for anyone looking for fantastic wild flower sites within driving distance of the D.C./Baltimore area. It is co-written by Chris Fleming, field botanist with the Maryland Natural Heritage Program and popular teacher of Wild Flower I.D. at the Audubon Naturalist Society in Chevy Chase, MD. Each site is described by the wildflowers you can expect to see in every season and directions are given as well as any info needed about gaining access to the site. Learn where to see one of the largest stands of Giant-flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) you will ever see or visit the only known site in Maryland to observe the beautiful Fringed Gentian (Gentiana crinita). This book will keep you busy for many weekends of wild flower exploration.

Highly recommended as an addition to your birding library
The new "Guide to Birds of the Anza-Borrego Desert" by Barbara Massey, et al, is now available for $17.95. A lot of dedication and hard work went into the making of this book, which resulted in an excellent birder's guide. There is a lot of information about the status of birds of Anza-Borrego. There is an extensive species accounts section that lists the abundance and location information of all birds seen in the State Park and gives locations on where the rarities were found. There is a section on Species of Special Interest, a plant list, census and count data, and a table of monthly occurence. The Site Guides are very thorough, giving a short introduction to the site, directions, user tips, trail descriptions and the vegetation to be found there, and tells what birds can be seen in what seasons and their occurence, and gives nesting data. Highly recommended as a great addition to any birding or desert natural history library.

Art & Horses
This is one of my most treasured books. Anyone that is passionate about art and horses will thoroughly enjoy having this book in their library. The artwork is predominantly watercolour sketches accompanied with the writings of a young Englishwoman. I highly recommend this book; buy it and enjoy it, over and over again.

A must read for serious students of the American Civil War.
There are seemingly as many books on the American Civil War as there are stars in the sky, and one would think that every conceivable topic has been covered adnauseam and in truth, many have been. However, in Slavery on the Middle Ground, Professor Fields has written on a subject which, regrettably, heretofore has gone practically ignored. We need more history books like this one, for of all the many tomes I've read on the Civil War this ranks among the most revealing and interesting. I am not trying to appear politically correct by saying this. I must admit that I picked up this book with some trepidation. My only previous knowledge of Professor Fields was what I saw of her in Ken Burns famous documentary and to be quite frank, my perception was that, while being obviously very knowledgable, her perspective was a bit too narrow. But to my delight, I found this book, while at times justifiably pointed, to be quite balanced in its perspective.

Like all too many, I have viewed slavery in the border states, most particularly in my native State of Maryland, as having been almost benign. After all, nearly half of all blacks living in the state were already free before the first shot was fired. Therefore, I assumed that Marylanders must have held a more enlightened view of chattle slavery than their fellow southerners, hence the ratification of the State Constitution of 1864 that emancipated the remaining slaves. Reading this book has taught me how wrong that impression was and has also given me a great deal of insight into the special, though no less horrible, realities of slavery as it existed in Maryland before and during the Civil War. For instance, I found the attempt by southern and eastern shore slaveholders to re-enslave free blacks living within the state's borders prior to the outbreak of hostilities particularly enlightening. I never would have learned about it had I not read this book since, not surprisingly, it was not covered in any other history book that I've read. Nor, for that matter, was the virtual re-enslavement of free blacks through the use of what was euphemistically called apprenticeship laws.

Thank you Professor Fields for shedding much needed light on a very difficult subject!

Upon Their Shoulders
She watched through teary eyes, past the flowers, and beyond the coffin. What am I to do without him to help me, she thought. The words of the minister were hollow and echoed past her ears. She prayed, "Oh God, please help me just to take my next breath."

"How awful," they said, "to be left with four little boys. Surely she will remarry."

I can't remarry. I love only him. I must do this thing that has been placed upon my shoulders.

The above story, was my mother's story. She raised me, and my three older brothers, alone. She had no mate to help her. I have admired and will forever admire her strength and courage.

As I have read "Trailblazing American Women, First in Their Field," I have come to an admiration for the great women in American history. I admire their compassion and better wisdom. Such accomplishments as Jane Addam's, Hull-House, and Jeannette Rankin's, iron clad stance against war, have caused me to reflect, and in some cases even weep. I weep, for their's was the greater insight and they were not recognized for it, until, after many trials and hardships.

Barbara Kramer, has given us a treasure with her book "Trailblazing American Women." Whether you are an adult or a young person, this book will teach and bring you to a remembrance of those wonderful women who gladly carried our burdens upon their shoulders.

An excellent Sourcebook in the Art of Auric Healing
This book is a must for anyone interested in laying on hands and in understanding the human energy field in general. Barbara Brennan gives substantial background information concerning the disease process and how disturbances and imbalances in the aura manifest in the physical body. She then gives in-depth techniques for correcting these problems on a holistic level, including lucid examples of the ongoing process of healing.

My only complaint about this book is that it fails to address the highly subjective nature of higher perception, but those who are aware of auras should be able to relate her way of seeing with their own.

Although it may not be the best introduction for the beginning healer, overall, this book is an excellent addition to the shelves of intermediate to advanced healers, and it will serve them for years as their practice of the healing arts continues.

Essential reading for Lightworkers
This incredible book is probably the most amazing thing you will ever read, whether you're experienced in energy work, or just starting out. It's one of those books that, as you read it, you watch various aspects of your life simply slot into place. It gives you access to the bigger picture.

I have bought copies for many friends of mine, all of whom agree that the content is mind-blowing and life-changing. Barbara Ann Brennan is truly an angel sent to lead us gently and compassionately to the Light, and yet she seems so, well, human! and normal. The book will teach you so much about yourself, the Way Things Are, and guides you in your personal growth, allowing you to discover your true purpose. Yet it avoids that nasty pious, patronising tone that so many self-development books tend to have.

I believe this is essential reading for all Lightworkers, and will motivate and inspire you to learn more.

A Classic & Essential Reference Book
I consider HANDS OF LIGHT to be an essential reference book for anyone who is seriously interested in exploring energy healing. I am impressed with the way author Barbara Ann Brennan describes her early childhood experiences of sensing energy fields around trees and all living things, and even more impressed that after many years of training in physics and western ways of scientism, she never lost her inner sense of knowing.

HANDS OF LIGHT includes many pictures of auras and chakras, which serve to illustrate her points about how to identify common personality types and relationship types based on her in-depth personal healing experiences. Brennan also proceeds to explain how to help improve one's health by working on one's energy field.

Full enjoyment of HANDS OF LIGHT requires that the reader either have an open mind regarding the fact that many people can see auras and chakras, or the ability to see these things oneself. Brennan provides exercises to help people learn how to see energy fields, so any reader with a sincere interest in the subject of energy healing will most likely be very satisfied with this classic book.
