The author deserves credit for publishing these secret files! Any Elvis fan will find this new book well worth buying.

This is more like a series of linked vignettes centered on the free-wheeling vagrant (with a home) communal that lives above Monterey. The Paisanos', headed up by Danny, lives are irrevocably altered once Danny is bequeathed two broken down homes from his recently deceased Viejo. Steinbeck's writing here is direct and the life lessons the characters stumble upon haphazardly seem profound. One of the most unique aspects of the work is how seeming dishonest thieving lifestyles are justified by the amoral moral code developed by the Paisano's. The whole story has a deep sense of place, with the run down Tortilla Flat sitting above Monterey coming alive bit by bit. I read the whole book on a 5-day backpacking trip, so it's a short quick read but one worthwhile. The only other thing that I've read by Steinbeck is "Travels With Charley" which I thought was fairly phenomenal. The writing style deserves a 5, but since the shortness of the book didn't allow it time to delve too deep beyond linked short stories I'm reserving my 5's for possibly some of Steinbeck's books yet to be read by me.

This was the first of John Steinbeck's books that I ever read and is still my favorite. The sweet humor that comes through is more a result of the book's wonderful writing style and wording than from the plot itself; although the combined character traits of the paisanos work perfectly together-from the genius and comedy of Pilon to the morality of Danny the story that emerges is charming but not sentimental. The reader from Boston seems either too young or perhaps just not astute enough to realize these subtle shadings of character. Also in regards to his review, nowhere in the book does it say that the paisanos were Mexican immigrants, only of Mexican heritage. I highly recommend Tortilla Flat to anyone who appreciates Steinbeck's writing.

Tortilla Flat stays true to John Steinbeck's simple sentence and plot structure. Tortilla Flat is a short novel that exploits the "paisanos" of Tortilla Flat. "Paisonos" are people of mixed hispanic, indian, and caucasion blood. Steinbeck is a master of writing about social injustices and human nature. Although he doesn't come and out and tell you his opinions, he subconciously reveals his thoughts in his novels. Tortilla Flat is a little slow at times, but has its good moments. I like how the group of friends spend their time just drinking and chasing women. Its a nice change from just reading about suffering people who work all day to survive. I enjoyed reading this novel and I suggest you read it to if you are a Steinbeck fan.

The book kept me interested but it wasnt edge of the seat action but i would definately recommend it

Amateurish. Littered with typos and grammatical errors this book reads like a high school research report, which is a shame because Mr. Geisel deserves a more professional effort. The only worthwhile material in the book are the excerpts lifted from other sources of which there are plenty. Indeed, the book is more of a cut and paste collection of other journalist's reviews and analyses along with some of Geisel's own thoughts. Also, it's terribly overpriced.

The book contains useful information about Theodor Geisel, but I found the writing to be amateurish and choppy. "Littered with typos" is also an understatement. This book is more like a landfill of errors, with a count of over 25 blatant mistakes and sentence-structuring problems in just the first few chapters. Save yourself the money and find another biography.

This is a wonderful, warm, charming book -- true to the spirit of Dr. Seuss. The author's love of Seuss is evident on every page. Quotations from reviews of Dr. Seuss books through the years are also very interesting and helpful. A must for all Dr. Seuss fans.
