along with the works of cesare pavese, la malora (the ruin) is one of the great novels of the country to the east of turin. a must for anyone who loves italian literature of the 20th century.

I just rate 4 stars, because I read (in original, of course) another Fenoglio's work which deserves 5... In this one the "private matter" is completely absorbed by the war. Fenoglio is great, and very able to make you feel the hunger, the cold, the fear for a situation like the Italian Resistance. It's far away from rethoric, everything is described as it really had to be for a 20 year old boy, too quickly grown up.Milton's story is easy and difficult as love can be. I don't know if there is any translation of "Il Partigiano Johnny"; if yes, please, check it and read it. He is the best representative author of one of the most important pages of Italian history.

This book is outstanding. It's sharp, brief yet it doesn't lose the appeal of a novel, while looking similar to poetry.

It speaks about fighting, love, war, loneliness and the vanity of all, while letting in the action of a resque mission taken up by a rebel fighter in World War II.

A must read, and a very good work of action too. Read it then write me!
