Stunningly brilliant!!!!!!!!!
This is quite simply the most breathtaking performance by a narrator that I've ever heard. This collection of truly great American short stories, most of which were written in the last 75 years, ranges throughout the country...north, south, east and west. It is just unbelievable to me that any single person could sit down and perform all these stories with an all-encompassing depth of comprehension and a complete mastery of accents...and then on top of that to provide absolutely believable voice characterizations that are totally distinct from the voice of the narrator. This guy Griffin can do a completely convincing child or woman, and then in the next breath he's either back to the narrator voice or that of a male character. I teach literature classes at the high school and junior college level and I have received outstanding results in getting my students to listen to these fine stories without complaint where previously I had to beg and cajole them to read. These recordings have engendered many a lively classroom discussion. The music and sound effects are perfect, never intruding...always in the background when you most appreciate them. You'll never hear Faulkner done better than here. Absolutely fabulous work!

apocryphal into the actual
This is a well-researched work that's easy to recommend. Doyle is an excellent historian who is well-versed in Faulkner.
The combination makes this fine book both an interesting history of Faulkner's native "postage stamp of soil" and an excellent introduction to Faulkner's world. It also provides a wonderful example of what a historian actually does (although not without some cautions along the way).

An amazing visual account of the life of Oxford Mississippi
There has been very few times in the past that I have ever considered buying a coffee table book, most in my opinion just collect dust.

This book however is a wonderful pictorial account of Oxford Mississippi during the time when Faulkner still walked our streets. What I think is amazing is that some of the people pictured in this book as children still live in Oxford and are still an active and beautiful part of our local history.

This is an ideal gift for friends or family that have attended the University of Mississippi and have learned to love the small town personality of Oxford.

Glorious
An excellent intro to Faulkner. Beautifully written and one of his most accessible works. See the "Long Hot Summer" with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward which is a filmisation of a novella of the same name in 'The Hamlet'. Great stuff!

About The Sound And The Fury
After reading the Sound And The Fury, one cannot but describe Faulkner's book as a work of genius. It is so full of creativeness and passion that you just go on turning pages without realising. It is a story told from four perspectives, of the disintegration of a Southern family. Indeed the book presents a daunting challenge for all readers.Though difficult to read, the novel left me in awe at the emotions possible from a single string of words. The Sound And The Fury attains heights and depts of expression that are truly breathtaking, it is an unforgettable work that richly rewards the reader's efforts.

Brilliance with a home country feel
Price's greatest achievement here is his ability to so seamlessly weave a complex and substantial narrative with a simple set of plot occurences. The characters are inclusive and inviting, complex and pure. Overall this is one of Price's finest works, surely to be enjoyed by anyone familiar or unfamiliar with his writing. The sights and sounds of the south come off the page and play to all of the reader's senses. An enjoyable read and experience.

Essential Faulkner
This is one of those books that are force on you at school. The basic story is of a Southern belle driven mad by isolation and her ties to the past. If this is your first reading of something representative of Faulkner this is the best example, as it is short and the story is intriguing. You can enjoy reading it for what it is and not have to analyze the thing to death. Even if you do not particularly cotton to Faulkner's style or subject matter, this book will transcend both. In 1982 they made this story into a movie with John Houseman and Anjelica Huston.
