Just the Necessary Info Please
On my quest for employment I have read many a job search book. This book is nice and compact, offering the necessary info and steps quickly. The book outlines the essential ways everyone should look for work, warm and cold networking, using the internet etc. Farr takes you on a journey of worksheets that, before you know it, leads you to the type of job you want and the skill you have to get it. Other books attempt to do similar things, but don't have the clear/clean path this book does. In short this book covers the entire job search process from resume to interview and everything in between, in a short percise and effective way. I highly recommend it.

If you like structure, this book will help you
This book goes with the Very Quick Job Search: Instructor's Curriculum and the Very Quick Job Search Book. The actual curriculum depend on group dynamics, so if you are an individual, it may not help you. However, if you like structure to your job serch, you may find the worksheets useful. Of particular interest are the worksheets "Jobs of Interest in the Occupational Outlook Handbook," "Information Interview Summary Worksheet," "Telephone Contacts Workseet" and the worksheet for writing a resume. Jobhunters in need of structure could conduct their entire job hunt using these self-explanatory worksheet.

'Quick' - and meant it ...
Although I tend to think of myself as a 'charasmatic' writer, I think that the resume examples used in this book were a little mundane for my taste. Of course, I am a bit on the 'animated' side of the spectrum. So, as usual, I sought to find a page where a person like myself could write a resume that would be dynamic, but not label myself a 'nutcase' to the prospective employer.
I skimmed through the front of the book a couple of times. Information I already knew. But, this book (whether they have a chapter titled "For those of you with Bipolar disorders) will be a very handy refence book. It was the first recommendation given to me by many 'a' source! Tons of different resume examples - as well as cover letter's, 'Thank you' letters, and all the goodies we will most likely forget.

Hey! A new twist on a traditional technique.
Although Farr doesn't address electronic résumés, his improve-upon-your-résumé-in-stages technique is not only effective with traditional résumé development, but it is an excellent technique to use when posting résumés to Web-based job boards and databases. You can provide just enough information to get your résumé posted quickly, with enough flexibility to go back and update it later.

A little too quick for me
My job search wasn't enhanced by this book. I felt that it didn't focus enough on choosing the right career and the right job like Vaultreports.com. Thus, it didn't help me a great deal in choosing what to pursue.

francis bacon is back from the grave
i love that francis bacon is credited in the title above as 'illustrator" in dennis farr's little retrospective. bacon who sought to avoid illustration in his paintings by creating a reality, often relying somewhat on chance, that if inaccurate was in his mind 'greater' than the truth. this taken from a very moving quote from van gogh, whose letters and paintings francis studied closely. the reverse landscape in question is in fact reversed - its like an error card. otherwise the text is intelligent and the body of work is well chosen but there are so many bacon paintings its hard to find a comprehensive publication.

good bacon.
somebody else said the color needed work. i have definitely seen much worse. one of the images might be flipped, maybe there were problems reproducing certain colors - i never saw the originals so how would i know - but overall i have to assume it's fairly accurate; at least, it works. it's nice that the descriptions face the plates, but that's just common sense. overall it's a fairly comprehensive collection. there are only a couple pieces left out here that i miss, but i can find them in practically any other bacon book so it's no big deal.

Magnum Opus
Well, here it all is - the paintings, the analysis of the person, the milieu that aided in the production of this prodigious artist, brilliant essays that go further than predessors into the hows and whys of Francis Bacon - the much anticipated Retrospective book and exhibition. One of the finest aspects of this book is the placement of descriptions of the background and the implications of each painting adjacent to the work. No search party needed here. If only as much attention to detail would have been spent on the four color separations of the works then this would truly have been the definitive work about one of the most exciting painters of the last century...AND chronicler of the disintegration of society and mentality brought about by the dissecting sciences.

Good book for those still in college
The title of this book is a little misleading, this is a great resources for those who are still in college and maybe considering what they would like to do with their post-graduate lives. The book has a good listing of classes that students may want to take to help with a chosen career. The listing of careers is rather limited, focusing on the jobs with the greatest potential growth in the 21st century. In all this was not a very helpful book in finding a job, but worth looking at.

A horizon-expanding jobs/career compendium
With its meticulous descriptions on all aspects of 281 jobs ideal for college graduates throughout a spectrum of employment fields, Michael Farr and LaVerne Ludden's Best Jobs For The 21st Century For College Graduates have created a superbly presented, invaluable, and horizon expanding jobs/career compendium that should be a standard reference for all college and university job center and employment counseling centers.

Old DOT [Dict of Occupational Titles] looks out of dark ages
Far superior to old DOT. This ONE book gives info concisely yet on far more Job Titles and has cross references to legacy Dept. of Labor publications. I eagerly jumped on the internet to follow up some leads. When JIST gets all the info up on their website it will be a fantastic resource. I hope they make full book available to bonifide buyers online - cut & paste beats typing! The 4 star rating was based by overly broad Job Titles seeming to inflate the SVP [Specific Vocational Preparation] and GED [General Educational Developement] requirements. This could skew the perception that the goal is less achievable and cost(s) exorbitant. We specifically researched 31514 Vocational & Education Counselor DOT 187.167-198 Veterans Contact Representative. This gave SVP 7 [>2 years and

NOT GREAT JOBS
I liked the idea the author had of helping people without a bachelor's degree. Unfortunately, some of the jobs listed are, quite frankly, a JOKE. An actor has the potential to be a great occupation, but what are the odds of every reader becoming Tom Hanks ? (reality)Most likely they will starve waiting for there big break. I also don't consider a "Taxi Driver" a fullfillng career. The last time I checked a taxi driver was not one of the most highest paying jobs out there. Which leads me to my most important point. Most of these jobs that are listed here, with a few exceptions, are low paying jobs. Money is not the most imprtant thing in life, but the author seems to beleive that you can become a teacher's aide, make $6.50/hour and live happy !!! Does the author realize that someday I may want to retire, and with a low paying job I can't save that much to retire on.

A good book for those who will learn on the job
An acedemic education can be a help but is not the answer for many who can learn on the job, or can learn a trade through non-academic schools. Our history is full of such individuals who were highly successful without a degree. This book is an excellent guide to all types of jobs available to job seekers regardless of education.

Great Book for a High School Student
I purchased this book for my nephew, who was a HS Senior. Although he likes school, college was not for him. Like many HS Seniors, he did not know what he wanted to do, or what kind of careers he might like. I gave him the book. He read at least some of it. I was surprised to see how excited he was after looking at the book. He decided on a career path and has applied and been accepted in a Drafting program at a Vocational School. The book was well worth the excitement in his eyes. He feels focused and for the momement he has found a career for him. The book gives lots of information about careers and what it is like to be a ... He has showed the book to his friends and they seem just as thrilled with the content as he was. I think every HS junior or senior should look at this book for ideas on how to spend the rest of their life.
