Sensitive exploration of a child's saddness and grief
This book tells three separate stories about children's experiences with death. The first tells how a boy deals with the death of his uncle. The second, how students deal with the sudden death of a classmate. The third tells of a girl who is at the bedside with her family when her grandmother dies. Each one deals with the sad feelings surrounding death, but also celebrates the life of the deceased individual. Each story ends with how the children cope and come to terms with loss. Before and after each story are poems that connect death with the celebration of life. These explain that endings and beginnings are all connected. I was particularly impressed with the sensitive way that the author deals with a child's sadness and gently shows ways of coping. She notes that the sadness may never completely go away, but that eventually it is outweighed by understanding and new forms of mastery.

The Saddest Time
The Saddest Time is a great resource to use with children that are dealing with both the potential and eventual loss of someone they care about. There are three short stories in this book. The first one deals with the loss of what appears to be a middle aged uncle, the second the unexpected and accidental death of a young child, and the third the dying and death of an older person, in this case the grandmother. The first story includes the anticipatory grief phase that the child experiences. Trying to make conversation with someone who is terminally ill. It addresses the fear associated with the possibility of losing parents. It also addresses the grief after the death, and attempts to help and comfort the family. The second story is about an accidental death of a classmate. The children in the classroom are given the opportunity to remember and discuss their feelings. They are also encouraged to send the family cards and letters, writing about special times they shared with their friend that died. The third story is about a child's grandmother who is dying and actually dies when the family is present. It discusses the feelings of sadness and anger that the child feels. It further discusses in simple terms, the funeral and the support provided to the grandfather. It also encourages the child to reminisce. Overall, this book really encorporates death as a normal part of life. The emotions experienced because of death are normalized and expected. It addresses feeling experienced. Discusses feelings and common funeral rituals as well as the support that is shared with friends and families after a loss. People, including children experience grief in their own way. This is an excellent book,as it encorporates anticipatory grief as well as the grief experienced after the death of a loved one. It also addresses three different experiences that are common in life. I feel it could help adults and children alike. This book would be great a great resource for the community and should be included in school system, public libraries. We are including this in our hospice library for our community to use.

Woof!
Filled with large color plates, most with a detail added to show stitching on a particularly lovely band. These are remarkable samplers, mostly English, all very old and THE GOOD STUFF. The examples of whitework, especially, just don't seem like anything human hands could do. What a great book to dream through!

Absolutely stunning!
If you have an interest in samplers this book is a MUST! The photography is incredible. There are over 100 color plates of a wide range of samplers from the museum. Every plate has a picture of the sampler in its entirety and many have a close-up of a section of the work which allows you to see the individual stitches in great detail.

There are samplers from a wide range of techniques and subject matter. Techniques include cross stitch, blackwork, drawn thread, cutwork, crewel, specialty stitches, and Berlin work. There are band samplers, spot samplers, and darning samplers. There are samplers depicting maps, almanacks, and the solar system. There are samplers from England, Germany, Turkey, Morocco, America, Scandinavia, and West Africa.

This is a book you will come back to again and again.

Fascinating
I have read many books about Indian wars on the plains. None has the same effect, the same riveting quality, that Scalp Dance has. Rather than an author's version of what happened, this author simply guides us through a chronological trail of bloodshed - narrating where need be, but letting the actual written accounts of those who took part tell the real story. Army men, their wives, settlers, and others tell their tales as they experienced them first hand. I have to say that these first-hand accounts paint a picture more violent, brutal and ruthless than any other book I've read. This is not a watered down version of what happened, or someone's interpretation. This is real. Indian wars have been glorified so much after all these years. It's good, though disturbing, to be reminded that the participants were not always the noble beings we've been imagining. It's hard to picture a culture so vicious in these modern days. Scalp Dance tells it like it was, rather; the accounts of those unlucky enough to take part do the telling.

Indian Wars through Contemporary Eyes
The account of the events is vivid and memorable. The emphasis is on the words of those people who experienced life on the Great Plains at the time, both military and private citizens, men and women. The Indians did not write memoirs ordinarily, but their attitude comes through in their recorded encounters with the whites. Also, these days we know much more about how they were treated. Why contemporary whites felt as they did about the Indians is a strong point of this book.

Another fine point of this book is that the author has avoided skewing the story with political correctness. The history is neither "noble savage" nor "the only Indian is a bad Indian." It is a clash of cultures seen by walking in the shoes of contemporaries.

In addition, there is a very informative view of General George Custer and Mrs. Custer, one enhancing our knowledge of his military ability and their humanity. Custer's relationship to the Indians is especially revealing,

Favorite Childhood Book
I loved this book as a child and still have the gift to read and share with my own children. Every story is very charming and extremely fun to read. My favorite is The Diamond D and the Dreadful Dragon!! Those of you who have had the pleasure of reading this particular story, and have a wry sense of humor fully understands why. This book is a classic and a "must have for all children."

The Seseame Street Storybook
What a wonderful book! Full of emotions, life lessons and fun familiar friends. The story of the Princess and the teeny tiny cookie has stayed with me all my life and I have so enjoyed sharing it with my own daughter.

Experience vs Hypothesis
This is the first book of I have read in which Einstein wrote directly rather than the many reiterations of his works. Sidelights on Relativity is a two part book of lectures in which he gave in 1920 and 1921. The first titled "Ether and the Theory of Relativity." Einstein explores the concepts given by Newton, Maxwell and Lorentz of the ether arguing the universe is not mechanical in nature. The other argument is the purely physical aspect in which the mechanical perspective seems to propose what is seen is that exists, and/or can be measured and proven to exist. That "space without ether is unthinkable," that is, the effects of spce/time gives credence to ethers existence just as "the undulatory surface forming the boundary between water and air alters the course of time." This, then, creates the contradiction. The second lecture is titled "Geometry and Experience" in which Einstein argues Euclidean geometry by noting the difference of experiencing and proposing laws of earth-measurement. He demonstrates this through the plane and the globe asking the reader to imagine the globe and a plane. While the plane is infinite in all directions, similarly one can fill the plane up infinately. This is not an all together accurate picture of our universe. Rather if we imagine a sphere and fill that up, we realize only a finite amount can fill up the space.

At this point, I will say that my understanding stands at a finite point in which it would be only arrogant for me to claim I understood the entirety of the book. Nonetheless, I found this book completely readable, mostly due to the fact that there are no formulas to follow. My knowledge of relativity is limited and I have given you what I believe I understand. Its a short book with the writing clear and concise and logical; which surprised me hearing stories about Einsteins genius in which he is unable to explain in laymans terms. Highly reccomended!

Professor Einstein

Snake's Daughter: The Roads in and Out of War (Singular Lives)

SUPERB READ
Without self-pity nor malice Gilberg writes of a challenging childhood with two dysfunctional parents. This is far more than a retelling of this family's painful history; it's a book that encourages any reader to look into the deeper reality of the events in their family's life enabling reconciliation and healing to result. Gilberg's honest sharing, laced with love and respect for her father, left this reader glad to have "met" this
man. I like him. And it's a book that will bring some understanding and peace regarding our involvement in Vietnam which I also found helpful.

An Affecting Memoir-- Beautifully written
This is a terrific book, one that works into the memory from a series of photos and a set of fixed memories of a difficult man and a difficult childhood. it's so much more than a tale of dysfunction though. Its the elegant tale of a survivor, of a little girl and a nation.

This book is not getting the attention it deserves!

A wonderful social work treasure
An impressive, professionally prepared practice guide was born in 2002 for social workers. Professors Roberts and Greene include 146 topics that are relevant to social work practice in this desk reference. This exciting guide, that is divided into sixteen parts, not only provides the essential components for social work practice, but also presents the most informative discussions about how to enhance knowledge, skills and values for use in social work education. This book is also an encyclopedia for social work practitioners. It provides a clear picture of how skills are applied in different situations with contents and describes the use of case studies that are devoted to vulnerable populations, as well as to children and families with special needs. It addresses the technological, ethical and cultural issues of skill applications in direct practice and research. It also analyzes past issues, current state of practice principles, and future of social work development. Its comprehensiveness makes this guide book a social work treasure.

The only complete CCD text / resource book.
This book could have been better. But considering how many books on CCDs are actually available - this book is too good to be true. It is fairly in-depth and deals with a broad array of topics. Processing (eg. doping levels etc) perspective should have been better.

A very comprehansive one of its kind book.
A good book which has all the info regarding imaging applications of CCDs.
