This book by an eminent social historian of Germany tells the story of the cholera epidemic in late nineteenth-century Hamburg. Using an excellent mixture of local politics, history of science, traditional political history, and demographics, Evans shows how the attempts of local politicians to resist pressure from Berlin during the years of unification led to thousands of deaths in Hamburg due to an outdated water system, while residents in bordering Altona were spared. The story shows the interaction of politics with the history of science and technology, as rival theories about cholera -- the environmental "miasmic" theory and the infectious disease theory advocated by Robert Koch in the Prussian ministry of health -- were debated. A state-of-the art work of historiography that's also a gripping read, written in the shadow of the AIDS epidemic. It's really too bad that the paperback went out of print

The Journals of Hipolito Ruiz, Spanish Botanist in Peru and Chile, 1777-1788
Published in Hardcover by Timber Pr (1998)
Amazon base price: $44.95
Average review score:

If you like plants and the ethnobotanical uses of them (like I do), along with exploration and adventure, then this book is for you. Hipolito Ruiz was a Spanish botanist in Peru and Chile from 1777-1788. Along with all the many hardships which he encountered back in those days, he observed and recorded the many different kinds of medicinal and non-medicinal plants which the natives used. It truly is a fascinating account of his travels and what it was actually like in the 1700's. Along with being an adventure in ethnobotanical exploration , it is also a cultural portrayal of the peoples who lived there. I also enjoyed the appendix at the end of the book which lists the medicinal plants in alphabetical order which are mentioned in the text. Maybe this book should be required reading for medical students (?). Could be a cure for cancer, aides, etc. down there (!)

This books is excellent. It contains information from respected medical specialists presented in terms the lay person can understand. The surprising success of limited surgery is explained in clear and reassuring terms. Dr. Evans presented some of his research at the World Conference on Breast Cancer in Kingston, Ontario, Canada in July 1997. He concluded, "Promptly treated local recurrence does not spread."

McEnroe, taming the talent
Published in Unknown Binding by Bloomsbury ()
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

This review is with regards to the paperback version of the book. I enjoyed looking at Mc Enroe's year for 1990. Yes he is a SuperBrat at times and brutally honest, but the author, who knows McEnroe, only defended him somewhat and chastised him for his behavior. He pointed out there are people who do worse in sport, but get a lighter punishment. McEnroe uses his mouth, not his fists to do battle, and while his language can be abusive, there are worse things he could be doing. All in all, an enjoyable read. If you're a fan of Mac or not, but you enjoy tennis, I would recommend picking up a copy from a used bookstore if you can't obtain it by other means.

The book is a wonderful biography of one of the finest tennis players of all time. The author has revealed to the reader the real John McEnroe. A person who craved to be perfect snd even a slightest mistake resulted in a tantrum . The book tells us that after all the superbrat is not all that bad that the media makes him to appear to be. His heart is in the right place. He is charitable and most importantly extremely patriotic . His davis cup performance remains unmatched. Some on the incidents narrated in the life of John tells us about the life of a tennis pro and what the players have to go through out there. The pressures, the dissapointments and the injuries that can destroy a career for good. The book arouses your interest and is difficult to put away till you have finished reading it. I will put it down in my list of favourite titles.

This book goes into a visual comparision of the powerful Western World and the rest of the World. It depicts through pictures and statistics the growing gap between the have and the have-nots. Very powerful yet still a coffee table book.
