A nicely written tale of true horsemanship
This is a story which I felt is best suited to the younger reader. It tells the tale of a horse, from birth, through dressage training to the olympic arena. The writing style is quite inspirational and aimed at promoting good sportsmanlike conduct and horsemanship.

Very inspirational!
I have read this book many times and learn more each time. You don't have to own a horse or even ride horses to enjoy and learn from this book. This is a book for readers of all ages and interests.

Wonderful Book!
This was a wonderful book! I'm only 13, but I just love names and this is my favorite name book out of the 6 I own. Thanks for making it wonderful, Kate Hanley!

Thank you Parent Soup!
Parent Soup - you have done it! What a great "tool" to help with finding the perfect name! The category lists were a marvelous idea - everything from the standard lists (boy or girl names) to unisex names, ethnic names, and even how many syllables a name contains.

My favorite parts of the book were the tips given by parents like me, who have been through it all - from how to handle giving your child a name that has been passed down in the family to which spelling to use for a certain name. These parents offer up their best advice to help you make the big name decision.

We had so much fun with this book as a family! My children really enjoyed looking up the meanings of their names, and even talked about what they might name their own children someday. I got the chance to tell each of my children again why we had chosen their names, giving them a little more insight into who they are.

I am giving a copy to an expecting friend as a shower gift. I think she and her husband will have a great time trying to find just the "right" name for their new baby. Thank you Parent Soup for putting this together with the help of your members!

I Wish This Book Had Been Available To Me Long Ago!
Parent Soup's Baby Name Finder is much more than lists of name possibilities. This book deals with the real issues that many parents face when considering names for their bundles of joy. Real parents from Parent Soup's online parenting community give tips on how to handle such issues as "dealing with flak from family and friends" and how to determine if you have a "keeper". The tips are not preachy; they only offer several opinions that all parents will want to consider.

And those lists are fabulous! This book offers 42 lists in which to categorize names. If you want a Welsh name that has three syllables, you can find several here! You can even find out how your child's name ranks on a popularity scale. Did you know that Tatiana is one of the 50 most popular girls' names of the 90's?

My children thoroughly enjoyed looking their names up and learning about the ethnic origin associated with those names. Some were thrilled to find out that they had popular names, while others thought it was cool that their names were more "unique".

This book should be in every family's personal library. What a great resource for children when they have to do that inevitable report on the history of their names. And what a wondeful gift for soon-to-be parents. This book is just plain fun to read. It offers down-to-earth advice from "real" parents just like all of us.

Combating Fear of a Green Planet & Changing Our Habits
Although the phone numbers have changed and the contact names are probably different, this 374 page information packed tome still deserves to be in libraries, schools, and environmentalists' homes.

Why? Because so many of the environmental issues, and surrounding philosophical questions, remain the same almost a decade later. The Green Pages stands out as an excellent primer on environmental issues with 39 indepth articles by leading experts and focuses on what each individual can do to live a greener lifestyle. (Yes, there are some real extreme back to nature Greenies here, but there are many more sensible suggestions for average California consumer.)
"We can no longer depend on government or industry to save us," writes Rick Luskin of the Malibu-based Environment Now foundation. "We must enlist consumers to produce a cleaner, safer environment. We all make hundreds of decisions every day in the marketplace, and each decision has consequences."
That "the world is on your shoulders" theme continues. Noting that reforming government and lobbying for greener laws can take time, many writers emphasize personal responsibility.
The Green Pages underscores the essential fact that elected representatives and corporate decision makers would be far more likely to "bite the bullet" and suggest environmental alternatives if more American consumers were willing to recharge electric batteries, ride the bus, take shorter showers, and pay "sin taxes" on products like gasoline and wood.
Perhaps this manual for green, frugal living will find a larger audience in the post 9/11 world. Stranger things have certainly happened.

greater los angeles green pages
the greater los angeles green pages provides environmental vendors as well as organizations dedicated to educating society. the book lists many opportunities to 'do your part' in saving the earth. dozens of recycling opportunities are available that you never knew existed. there are also many tips to improve your ecological awareness around the house and on the job.

Massive book, extensive information.
You'll need a library table to properly read or simply refer to particulars about specific chairs or makers, or even regional characteristics. It is the standard reference on the subject. But for a subject that often shines with the beauty that so many people appreciate about American decorative arts, the book is a bit stiff in its appearance, particularly if you're familiar with Charles Santore's two books on the same subject. Where his is a visual feast, hers is a compendium of the most up-to-date knowledge on the subject.
Together, they provide all you'll need to know and appreciate about American windsor chairs.

Loving Therapy for the Chronic Thumb Sucker
As a childhood thumb sucker, and now mother of two chronic thumb suckers, I know how hard it can be to break this pesky habit. Desperate for a gentle solution I found Nancy Evans Cooney's tale! This story loving tells of a boy named Donald and his love of his thumb. My four-year old son could easily relate to this young boy's life: his dog, his baby sister, how he was growing up and learning to do things all on his own, and of course his love of his thumb. After reading this story my son began to walk around the house saying, "Conner says, 'Thumbs down!" It certainly hasn't made the thumb sucking stop but it is a getle reminder that when he is ready, Conner like Donald will find many other wonderful things to replace his beloved thumb. I highly recommend this book!

Interesting book. Very informative!
This book offers a look at ancient civilizations like no other I've read. What the author writes about Mayan civilization is facinating! Anyone interested in history would enjoy the book and learn a lot. Also, the price is hard to beat being paperback.

Great Layout, Good Details - Even a Dad Can Use It
I may be one of the few, if only fathers to add in a review of this book, but as my wife thought the book was a good overview I picked it up myself. Once we found out that my wife was pregnant we went out and got an arm full of books in an effort to compete with the library of Congress. This book was one of the better buys. This book was one of my wife's and my favorites of all the child care books we bought. We both thought it was full of very helpful and interesting information that we wanted or needed. You really understand what is going on with each new issue as it comes up.

The book has a good deal of important advice and survival tips that may not be in more straight-laced books on the topic. The book is very easy to use with the topics in an easily found layout. The book is laid out A - Z and in bold across top of page with the topics cross referenced to help you find what you are looking for more easily. The writing is clear and to the point, no working through page after page of Dr speak. The book was unique in that if offered advice from parents, pediatricians and the La Leche League.

I found that I liked reading what other parents had to say about the different topics. It was nice to see what worked and did not work for other parents. The Doctors comments were also very helpful and well written - not dry and dull. Not only are there tips on your new born, but there is also advice for the parents as well. As expecting parents moving into full-blown parenting, this has been a great book. THe one item of caustion I would add is that this is not the only book you will need, it does not go into the detail that a Dr Sears book does. I think expecting and new parents should all get a copy of this book.

A definite must-have, especially for new moms.
All those questions that new moms (like me) have, now have a answer. Not only is there advice from parents but it also gives you the pediatrician's and La Leche League's viewpoints on subjects. You even learn how and where you can safely pinch pennies!

Not the best
Having loved Betty's first book "Love, Ellen" I was surprised to be a little disappointed by this one. Still full of love and support, Betty does have good points to make; however, it gets to sounding like a broken record after a time. I think Betty's problem lies in the fact that society can sound a lot like a broken record on this subject, and feeling passionate about her own side, Betty states her points over and over again to compensate. Her style in this book is a bit more rushed and choppy. But, as it is a quick read, and has more specific advice spelled out for parents of gay children, I would still recommend the book to anyone interested in gay rights and coming out (from both sides of the fence--those doing it, and those hearing it).

Definitely More Than "Just A Mom"
For any gay child, reading more from Betty DeGeneres confirms that we want to adopt her as our own Mom. More personal disclosure than her first effort. The unfortunate breakup between Ellen and Anne makes the timing of this release a bit awkward though. For any parent who is struggling to deal with their child's sexual orientation, this is a must-read book.

A wonderful book filled with excellent advice
"Just a Mom" was a tremendous help to me when I was struggling to overcome my ignorance about my daughter's homosexuality. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a gay loved one.
