Did any other readers of this poetically written daydream notice that while the white people in it sometimes pushed the borders of eccentricity, the black people were straight out of Margaret Mitchell fantasy land? They don't quite chuckle and shuffle, but darned near. The climax is reached in that never-never train ride. Which is more unbelievable--that although the train was segregated, this brave young woman was allowed to escort her quivering protege unchallenged into the dining car, or that the daughter of a doctor was as fawningly grateful as Ms. Landon recalls? Ms. Landon writes a well-turned sentence. And I suppose one must envy her her memory, for its golden, if bogus, glow.

This is a lovely little book that makes you long for days gone by. I am an avid cookbook collector and currently intrigued with evertything Southern from the food to the mannerisms to the hospitality, so naturally this book appealed to me. After reading a breif excerpt about Miss Lady in "Southern Living" magazine, I ordered the book immedeately. The only dissapointment was the breifness of the book, I finished it in one afternoon. That could be because Ms. Landon had wonderful characters to write about and she is an enchanting storyteller. Her recollections of her upscale Southern upbringing are as priceless as the recipies that Henretta passed on. I have tried several of them; the Grapefruit Salad with Roquefort Dressing and the Creamed Spinach and Artichoke Hearts are both especially good. The recipies are fine, however, Ms. Landon's graceful prose is what makes this book a worthwhile read.

Ms. Landon's book is wonderful. I am a Georgian who likesto write, read and cook. This book inspired me and brought back memories and stories from my now-deceased granny! I read it in one day and I hated to see it end. I hope Ms. Landon writes another, and another. It's a keepsake and i can't wait to recreate these recipes. I plan to give it to some of my friends for Christmas,

Painting Dreams: Minnie Evans, Visionary Artist is an excellent book for children - not to be sterotyped because of its place in the African-American artisan series. I would love to have the book contain more of Evans art but would not give up the text. Mary Lyons has conveyed the social difficulties of being African-American in the early twentieth century not by "preaching" but by letting the story speak for itself. The result is a book that is appealing both for its art and for its social conscience.

This book was a good text book, the quality of my professor helped a great deal, lots of good pictures to compliment the text. For me it was easy to read because I love biology, and anatomy. Further more the book was laid out in a fashion such that learning was easy.

Too wordy for such a young targeted audience. Illustrations are not flattering to the First Families. According to the book jacket the artist has yet to tour the White House.

A short poem best describes my review of this book: "In this time of White House stress, When "The West Wing" is the best, It is nice to see a work of art, Showing 1600 has a heart!" THE BOOK IS AS CUTE AS THIS POEM! The author and the illustrator are both world class!

A wonderful book for children to see how the First Familes celebrate Christmas at the White House. I love how the author has woven true events of each First Family at Christmas into the text. The color illustrations are absolutely beautiful. The additional information in the back of the book for parents, grandparents, and teachers is a real plus. It is really hard to find a non-fiction Children's book of this caliber. Of course, I think the author's first book "Season's Greeting's from the White House" is a classic !

This novel is a fascinating read. But, in comparison to "Three Blind Mice" it is anticlimatic. And one is left wondering exactly why Mary's twin sister decided to show up at Matthew's house and attack his daughter after the verdict was announced when all she had to do was disappear.

This book never really seems to get going. There is too much time spent in the courtroom while basic questions about the crime and the suspect/defendant are left unasked.

After 200 pages, I realized that this book wasn't going to pick up or reveal any crucial information to make sense out of things until the very end.

As a result, the whole story rapped up very quickly in an unbelievable way and you are left wondering why no one could figure anything out earlier. Based on the ending, the detectives and attorneys appear rather incompetent.

I did enjoy parts of the book, however, and I think the plot needs to be unfolded at a different rate (not so slow in the beginning and not so fast at the end). I am a McBain fan and think that some of his other books are better written.

Mary, Mary is a fascinating courtroom drama....except for the ending. The ending is contrived and just plain silly. But then, if one must run out of gas, I suppose it is better to do it near the end rather than the beginning.
