Awesome
I loved this novel for many reasons. One is that I have met and worked for Charles Evans and another is the fact that the writing is fluid and weel done. john waters did a good job of captruing the personality of Charles and the way he acts. I'm just glad I had the chance to read this nove;l.

Wow, and this is a true story!
As in all things, there is "one bad apple that spoils the whole bunch." That is a way to view the CIA and other branches of our government. There is always someone or something that is rotten.

John Waters does a fine job of presenting the story of Juan Rubio. Charles Evans is such an all-round great character. We are able to view a human side to these characters.

Now we wait with anticipation the sequel. Please, John, let there be a sequel!

Intense...riviting...outstanding work.
Scarily shocking, true-to life documentary of the widespread, unchecked corruption of our Government. Makes you think our liberties in a whole new light. Am I really free? John Waters and Charles Evans have risked their lives in exposing a woven tale of deceit and lies so that others can be freed from the long arm of tyranny and injustice. You both deserve a heros welcome and thank you!

Balloons and the Civil War
I just finished reading the War of the Aeronauts and I found it a real delight. I never knew how important balloons were during the war and Evans really writes both a good story and packs in a lot of info. It's a real shame that the balloons were discontinued as early as they were. It seems as if they might have been able to play a significant role in ending the war soon. Oh well, alternate scenarios. But the War of the Aeronatus is a great book.

A "must read" book on Civil War balloons
I am just estatic over this new book on Civil War balloons written by Charles M. Evans. Number one, he is an extremely engaging writer who can balance telling a good story along with the the necessary historical data to back up what he writes about (this book is voluminously footnoted!).

War of the Aeronauts really does add a new and hitherto unexplored facet of the Civil War. Literally thousands of books have been written about land battles, general and leaders, and even naval situations--but few have even mentioned America's first air force. Thaddeus Lowe should go down in history as one of the great innovators of the 19th century. Evans' fascinating writing style captures the essence of how Lowe persevered in his quest to prove how aeronautics could be used on the battlefield despite the artillery fire from the Confederates and the infighting and technical indifference displayed by Union military leaders.

This book is definitely a must read for anyone who thinks they have read everything there is to read on Civil War history.

A Great Civil War book about Balloons!
The War of the Aeronauts is a superbly written book by a very talented author. Who knew that balloons were actually used as extensively as they were during the Civil War? I didn't, that's for sure, and that is where this book does something that few books on the subject of Civil War history have done for me lately--it tells me something that is absolutely new about the subject of the Civil War.

If you think you have read all there is to read about the Civil War, think again. This book fills in one of the last missing chapters about the Civil War--the war from the air. Well done.

Spicer and Pegler's Book-Keeping and Accounts

Spicer and Pegler's Book-Keeping and Accounts
It's is a fascinating book on accounting, especially on the part of consolidation, where the author's is direct, approachable, explicit and easy to understand. But there is hard to find a book to suit all kinds of students and needs. Say, there is not enough discussion on FRS1 Cashflow Statements. On the other hand, it would be good if the writer can issue a workbook, which he had done before, with questions set on all levels. Overall, this is a good book to keep and refer.

Thumbs Up!
Paul Gee carries on a generation of one of the best accounting titles available which was first started by Spicer and Pegler more then 90 years ago. Written in the context of UK accounting framework, this book covers all the latest introductions in the world of accounting. Recommended by most teachers due to the excellent explanation and coverage of Consolidation Accounting, Paul Gee will not disappoint you on the rest of the accounting areas. Recommended for 'Power Users'!

This book is wonderful, full of common sense & warmth.
This is THE book to read if you own a Cav. or are thinking of buying one. The author writes with warmth and a sound knowledge of the breed, gained through years of successful showing and breeding of these lovely dogs. The chapters on breeding and puppy raising are a must for anyone contemplating this avenue. Of particular appeal is the chapter on natural remedies for just about any ailment your dog may suffer from. Whether your Cav. is a pet or a show dog, I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it's wonderful.

Comments on the author by Gary E.J. Smith
Evans is a fascinating man to listen to. He is a decorated veteran, but shuns the recognition he rightly deserves. He admits that some of his actions during the heat of combat "might have been foolhardy." Evans was not interested in medals, only in trying to keep his men alive. As Evans' Third Army Com mander, General George S. Patton remarked, "No one ever won a war by dying for his country. He won by making the other poor bastard die for his country."

Evans met several truly historical figures. First and foremost was Patton. After the first day of the Battle of Arracourt, Patton visited Evans' command post to commend him on a job well done. That was just the first of many encounters with General Patton. After hostilities ceased in 1945, Evans was assigned to a Prisoner of War camp near Landshut, Germany. There, while interrogating prisoners, he briefly met General Vlasov, another larger-than-life individual. Vlasov was a former White Russian officer who was convinced (some say coerced) to help the Nazis against the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front. Later, in Switzerland, Evans was able to get a glimpse of a compound full of Nazi war criminals, most notable of whom was Herman Goering.

Evans was also fortunate to have been able to participate in the design, testing and eventual combat deployment of the M18 "Hellcat" tank destroyer. The United States Army found that its antitank capabilities were woefully inadequate against the masses of German armor, so a new tank destroyer was desired. Evans, along with a handful of other armor officers from various posts around the US, was invited to Detroit to the Buick Division of General Motors, to offer suggestions for the design of this new vehicle. There are precious few times in a soldier's career that he is given the opportunity to impact upon the equipment he will use in the performance of his duty. Evans and these other officers seized the moment and helped to design one of the most effective combat vehicles ever. In ju! st a few short months the M18 went from the drawing board to the maneuver field and then the European Theater of Opera tions.

Gorgeous and well-written--recommended
The photographs by Lisa Watson are the first thing to catch your eye about this beautifully produced book. The majority are of museum specimens, which oddly is what makes the pictures so attractive: we're used to seeing high quality pictures of wildlife, but the displays here juxtapose many different beetles and have more impact than wildlife shots would.

The pictures are beautiful but the text is high-quality too. The authors start by reciting some statistics on the number of beetle species. Linnaeus, two hundred and fifty years ago, described 654 species; and Fabricius added another 4,112 species between 1775 and 1801. By 1876 Gemminger and von Harold's catalog contained nearly 77,000 species; and when Junk and Schenkling's catalogue was completed, in 1940, it listed nearly 221,500 species. It's now estimated that there are 350,000 described beetle species. However, recent work by Terry Erwin, extrapolating from detailed studies of a small area, suggests that there are more than eight *million* species of beetle just in the tropics!

The rest of the book is a fairly detailed survey of beetles in all their aspects. The authors are enthusiasts as well as experts, and it shows in their writing, which is crisp, clear and engaging. They cover beetle anatomy, fossilized beetles, habitats and niches, the beetle life cycle, and mimicry. There is also substantial coverage of beetles and humans: naming, appearance in mythology, use as jewels (really!), a discussion of pest control, and use in education. The book has more scientific depth than is usual for a coffee table book, without sacrificing interest value.

There is a website that appears to be maintained by one of the authors (Evans) that contains some material from the book; I recommend you take a look if you are hesitating about buying this. I found it by searching for the book title using a standard search engine; when I looked it was on the Lorquin Entomological Society's website, but it may have moved.

Recommended.

Jaw-dropping beauty
This is one of the most gorgeous books I own. I look at these pictures, and I think that human beings could not dream up jewelry that touches the beauty of these creatures. It is utterly unbelievable! Every time I page through this book my jaw is open in disbelief. They are so breathtaking they almost bring tears to my eyes. Okay. Confession time. They HAVE brought tears to my eyes.

This book is stunning!
Not only does this book have absolutely gorgeous photographs of many species of beatles, the factual content of the book is also very good. Not dumbed down, yet not inaccesible by the general public. Overall Excellent!

A must read!
Doc Evans not only tells it like it was, he makes his fellow grunts, like L. J. Henderson, and their heroism come alive in your mind. After reading Dr. Evans' book you won't want of miss two other books about the 4/39th during this same period; ...

A Hands-Down Awesome Battle Memoir
I am a military physician and was serving in Afghanistan when I read Platoon Medic. I read the whole thing, cover-to-cover in a day and a half. It's simply a great book. It is a well-written, action-packed, gut-wrenching rocket ride through the hellish world of the combat medic in Vietnam. I felt like I was there in the rice paddies, watching Doc Evans patch up his bloddy, dying comrades while the bullets were flying over his head. Dan Evans tells an astonishingly honest, important and poignant personal story. This book should be required reading for all Army medics and physicians. A great and important read.

It was like reliving the past
As a Squad Leader of 2nd Squad, 1st Platoon, reading Dan's book years after experiencing it brough back a floor of memories. We lost some good men in our battles, but we'ed lost a hell of a lot more if it hadn't been for him and the other medic's. I was honored to proof read his story before it was published and when I did, it was hard to hold back the tear's from the memories it brough. I'am honored to know him and to be part of his story.
