A Fairy Tale of a Lazy Little Girl Who Becomes a Princess
This is the story of a little girl who refuses to do any work - she would rather be catered to by her hard working mother. Lo and behold she manages to get in the queen's good graces with the help of a big old lie and needs the help of 3 fairies to get out of her predicament. The story is a twist on several familiar fairy tales - with a somewhat happy ending, although the little girl wouldn't say so. The moral? Those who work hard will be rewarded in the end, and the work itself can be its own reward. Lisa Campbell Ernst always has first rate illustrations which I love, and my daughter is always drawn to stories about princesses and fairies - so this book was an instant hit.

good for teaching ESL
The text is written of a pattern of numbers followed by plural nouns. This makes it easy for students of English as a second language to understand.

If you are teaching Asian students, who usually have trouble with the plural form, you might like this book.

A Funny Bunny Book
This book is about two long-time neighbors of forty-eight years, Miss Penny and Mr. Grubbs. Miss Penny is a nice lady that is an excellent gardener with a green thumb. She has won numerous prizes for her excellent vegetables. However, Mr. Grubbs is grumpy old man who doesn't share Miss Penny's talent of growing vegetables, and his vegetables are no where near her level. But like I said, he's a grumpy guy, so he plots revenge against Miss Penny by putting bunny rabbits in her backyard. I won't tell you the outcome of this story but it's a good book to read so you'll just have to find out for yourself!

MISS PENNY AND MR. GRUBBS
The book starts with Mr. Grubb being mad at Mrs. Penny becasue her garden grew huge vegetables and his did not. He said that this year it would be different. He said that he was going to do every thing he could do to make his garden better then hers. He put rabbits in her garden. When she put up a fence Mr. Grubbs cut it and put more rabbits in her garden. While he was trying to destroy Mrs. Penny's garden he forgot to water and take care of his own garden. Now that all of the rabbits had eaten her vegetables she had no vegetable to enter in the fair. So instead of a vegetable she took the rabbits and ended up winning first prize.
A great book for teaching a lesson on doing bad things to others. Nothing good comes out of it.

A must have for all young children!
This is a priceless story not only about being making lemonade but sharing it with the very person who was handing out the lemons! A great lesson for readers of all ages! Our six year old loves to read it and our six month old is captivated by the beautiful illustrations.

The Tale of a Cow
When Bluebell Sang is a touching story about an ugly cow named Bluebell who has a stunning voice. She is an excellent musician and can sing with the best of them. However her odd appearance is what catches the attention of Big Eddy. Bid Eddy is a talent agent who thinks that Bluebell is just what everybody's looking for...and he end up being right. Before long, Bluebell is a huge star. However, she grows homesick and yearns to return to her farm of old. So she plans to escape...

A good group read aloud for older elementary children
This is an appealing book about a singing cow with an unexpected ending. Children can sympathize with the cow and her understanding farmer. The story tells of this cow's talent and her exploitation by a greedy talent agent. The illustrations are big and uncluttered and well illustrate the story's events and emotions. Delightful!

The synopsis is wrong.
Don't pay any attention to the synopsis given for this book, it is wrong. This book has nothing to do with rabbits. It is about a cow.

This is a wonderful book, a great story to tell or read to children, by a wonderful author. Answers the question "Why do cows gather under trees in the summer?"

The Sequel to a Famous Story
Goldilocks Returns explains the story of what happened after that curious curly-haired girl had trespassed onto the property of the three bears. Of course, she grew up and ended up pinning her curls and opening up a lock shop for a living. However, despite all she has done to try and put it behind her, Goldi can still never forgive herself for going into the bears house all of those years ago. So, fifty years later, Goldi has a plan to try and make things right. Find out what happens in this sequel to one of the most well-known stories ever.

Good idea, but grown-up Goldi is less satisfying
The idea of telling "the rest of the story" of what happened to Goldilocks and the three bears is a good one, and I picked up the book with high expectations. I'm not saying the book is bad, but I felt sorry for the three bears, I didn't particularly like Goldi after what she did in the three bears' home, and I wished the bears had had a chance to speak up to Goldi to help resolve the issues that began when Goldilocks was a mischievous little girl... Goldilocks as a child was endearing; her antics in the three bears' house was not purposefully selfish or self-centered. Goldi as an adult is rather a disappointment - her attempts to "make it up" to the bears would have been more endearing, if not more amusing, if she had tried to think of what the bears would like, not what she wanted. I liked the story's ending, but felt disappointed in how Goldi and the three bears separated without so much as a word fit in edgewise from the bears. I'm sure kids who enjoyed the original Goldilocks will enjoy this, but I think it would be a good idea to discuss with the kids the idea that making up your mistakes to someone else doesn't always mean doing what you want, but it means trying to communicate with the other person and give something that the person would love - not be miserable with.

Clever Sequel
This is a clever sequel to the Goldilocks & the 3 Bears fairy tale. It is as much fun for the adult to read as for the children to hear. Goldilocks is now a middle aged woman who runs a store called "Goldie's Locks and Keys". She is racked with guilt for the trouble she caused the 3 bears so long ago and sets out to repair the damage she had caused. The bears aren't so enthusiastic about her return this time either. I enjoyed reading it and the illustrations are great. My 3 1/2 yr old daughter didn't catch all the inside jokes, but a 4 to 5 year old probably would.

Runaway story---cumulative tale grates on nerves
I'm not trying to be mean-spirited but I think that writing a cumulative story, where all the characters trail along in a parade and the main character gets to ask variations of the same question over and over and over and over and over and over must be more fun than actually reading such a story.

The first read is fine, but by the second, third, or fourth, you may start, as I do, editing the text, cutting through the morass of redundancy, gritting your teeth. There is simply little joy to be had from reciting names from an ever-growing list.

Moreover, the irresponsible way many of the characters treat a library book ought to strike a chord to the book lovers out there. Who would really leave a book lying on the counter of a diner, grab a book from someone's porch, put it on a park bench?

OK, I know this is a children's book, but the cascading series of incidents wears thin---especially after repeated readings.

The illustrations are engaging and well done, and the message that books are important is certainly a good one. Having each member of the parade of characters check out library books is a positive message. But all of the repetition finally just wears me out. I really hope I don't have to read this book aloud again.

A Delightful "Mystery" for Children and Librarians Alike!
I've read this fun book to several primary classes in our elementary school library, to the great delight of the children. It's a cumulative story in the sense that more and more people join Stella in the search for her missing library book, because "it's due today by five o'clock."

But another fun aspect of this story is the mystery behind the title of the runaway book. As Stella and her entourage meet each new person who has seen the book, another clue is given about the title, although it is never given. However by the time children have finished hearing "Stella Louella," they know that she had checked out "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." My students were thrilled and proud of uncovering the mystery before we finished the book!

As a librarian, my favorite part of the book is when Mrs. Graham, the librarian in the story, says her favorite part of the book is the same as with every book, "when someone READS it!"

Great fun for both children and adults
It's always a treat to find a children's book that combines good writing, wonderful illustrations, and an entertaining story. So often, the books children go for are lacking in both plot and writing quality. Children will never grow up to read good books if they're not exposed to good writing early on!! On the other hand, visually beautiful books that parents love often leave kids cold. This book combines all the best qualities in children's books. My 6-year-old daughter and I both loved Stella Louella. It is sure to become a family favorite. This book would make a great gift, especially if there is a librarian in the family!

We had to buy it......
I took this book out of the library.... over and over and over again for my 16 month old - so I had to buy it! She especially loves the last two pages right before she goes to bed - we have to read those pages over and over and over..... ! It is a very sweet book and one of my daughter's favorites.

Very sweet
This is a very sweet book, with simple illustrations and short, easy rhymes. (For example, "books to read" "stringing beads.") It's a great book for the end of the day because it's got a nice, quiet feel to it. Although they're virtually identical, I prefer Cat's Play, perhaps because we own a cat and my baby is crazy for him.

Short and sweet
This is one of my daughter's favorites, at four months old. It is short enough to hold her attention and she seems to focus very intently on the pictures. It's also very durable, which is great when she wants to grab the book and try to put it in her mouth.
