One of Elwood's Best
The second book in the Angelwalk series is rather different from the first. Observer, a fallen angel, is commanded by Satan to compile all the things that Satan has caused mankind to do, and to put a twist on it, so that Satan looks like the good guy. Observer is then told to write it all down, and this book will become the new Bible. You may think I have given the book's plot away. Hardly. There are many different stories within this book. I just gave you the centerpiece. I enjoyed this book thoroughly. If you enjoy spiritual warfare, this is for you.

The other side of tomorrow is a collection of short science fiction stories geared toward the reading level of young adults. Stories include the life of youths in a futuristic prison designed for youth traffic offenders who couldn't put away their racing gloves; the prison is designed to let them race until life in the fast lane takes its natural course. Among other stories is the tale of a very Orwellian society where children learn by plugging themselves into a computer. With goverment-controlled media and eyes everywhere, one youth is determined to tear down the goverment's shroud of virtue to reveal the intentions behind it...

Awesome, insightful. Gave daily life in regard to the Bible.
Felt that the book made me know the people of the bible better. How they lived and how like us they are in their daily life. Wished the author hadn't gone so fast through the years with some of the charaters. One of the best books on people in the bible I have read

Great! A very exciting book!
I really liked this book and parts 1-4. It was a great read, that kept me guessing 'till the end. On the downside, bookstores in this area sell it in the children section. I think this book was too harsh and somewhat violent for children to be reading. I would incourage parents to read it first and decide for their children. I would recommend reading the first 4 parts first.

This is a awesome series of books!
To read this book, you would need the knowledge of the other 2 books before it. At first they confused me, but after reading through it carefully it became very clear of what the author's main purpose for writing this book was. I recomend reading this, because this whole series is very intreging and interesting.

so-so ~ not my favorite
I bought this book expecting the same writing style as the preceding books in this series, but I was very wrong. In my opinion, this book read like a series of interviews with brief parts when we get to see "behind the scenes" with Darien and Stedfast. I wish it would have been more "fictionalized" like the others in the series were. Other than that, I enjoyed the book and found myself almost in tears at some parts. I hope Mr. Elwood writes another in this series!

An Interesting Meld of Fact and Fiction
I had heard this Angelwalk novel was a bit different. That's an understatement.

One thing about Roger Elwood -- when he's on, he's on. His best books are full of brilliance, bordering on genius. The others -- well, even books that aren't his best have moments of brilliance and power.

Where does this fall? Definitely in the upper end of the spectrum. I can't say this is the best Angelwalk novel, simply because the others are so good.

"On Holy Ground" recounts events of September 15, 1999, when a man entered a church and opened fire, killing and wounding a number of people. It is told from the POV of two angels from Elwood's Angelwalk series, Darien and Stedfast.

I have to admit I was a little worried when I picked the book up. The book uses a mix of documentary-like fact (pulling quotes straight from interviews) and the setting of the angels, which, however real it may be, must be left up to the imagination of the author because we just don't have the insight to see the actual events in the spiritual realm. At first I thought the mixing of fact and fiction would not work. But it does. Elwood uses the documentary tone to give us a portrait of the victims of this tragedy, a portrait of their life and legacy, and uses the angels as commentary and to recount the Biblical and spiritual truths presented. Their observations do not preach, although they come close to it. (The preaching comes at the end of the book with a well thought essay from a theologian about the nature of God and evil.) I was worried that the fictional angels would cheapen the true story. They do not. They serve to illustrate the spiritual underpinnings of an event like this in our culture.

My only real problem with the book was its length. It was too short. And at some points, Steadfast says some things that it seems to me should come from Darien's mouth . . . but that's just because I've read the originals recently, and is a minor "nit-pick".

I won't say "On Holy Ground" is entertaining, not in the way that Independence Day or Superman are entertaining. It is more like watching Schindlar's List. You know from the beginning that the book is heading into tragic territory. But it offers insight and encouragement, especially for Christians, through the iconography of Elwood's fictional angels.

Good doctrine taught, but needs to allow the reader to think
I read this book within a three day period. I own the Angelwalk trilogy and another great book by Elwood, Wise One, and I was an avid supporter of Roger Elwood's writings in my teenage years.

The way he writes is beautifully unique in itself and his ideas follow the Sound Doctrine of the Bible. Abortion, homosexuality, and other controversial issues always come up in an Elwood book, and he takes the same stand upon these issues parallel to the Bible. He always knows how to create such beautiful imagery that one's mind churns when reading certain passages.

The book, Darien, is mediocre and seems to try to make the reader become emotional, which almost always fails. The first book of the Angelwalk series (appropriately named Angelwalk) and the other book, Wise One, evokes emotion from the simplicity of the circumstances the characters are put through. Darien tries to use the same tools, but they seem like gimmicks, and it seems repetitive. It, however, goes into certain interesting situations not mentioned in any Biblical literature, but it is still interesting to read the author's interpretation and allow him to tell some other stories of Jesus.

In other words, if you are looking for a quick read, read Angelwalk, if you want a good book, read Wise One, and if you want a combination of the two with some water added, read Darien.

Peace and Charity
I am the reviewer from Sacramento.I was a little distressed when I read my review sparked their interest: She agreed with its right wing Christian viewpoint. I am also a devout Christian who reads the Bible with "Heart and Mind" to quote Peter Gomes. God loves all of her children. I felt like my review was used to give aid and comfort to the enemy. I hope another progressive writer will take the theme and show Jesus' and humanity's real enemies: racism, classicsm, poverty, meanspirited, and homophobia. May the Peace of the Lord be always with you!

At risk of being deleted...
As I have never attempted this before, I just now stated that the reader from Sacramentos review was helpful to me. I thought I would then be able to explain my resoning behind this. As I could not then, I will now. I am a Roman Catholic who adores her faith, and as such I follow the Church's teachings. I am pro-life, and do not believe in homosexuality as a valid life choice. This does not mean by any standards that I am "homophobic" or that I consider myself holier than others or more righteous. I follow the belief of "love the sinner, hate the sin." The review I am speaking of has given me cause to read this book, because it sounds like something I will like, rather than the liberal writing I had thought it would be from the synopsis. Thanks and God Bless you!

A breathtaking portrayal of life, death and what lies beyond
The Angelwalk Trilogy is easily the one of the most moving books (or rather, series) I've ever read. Elwood clearly and passionately portrays the greatness that can come out of tragedy, the pervading evil that can hide behind even the most seemingly harmless facets of modern life. He shows us the overwhelming beauty of Heaven and the gut-wrenching horror of hell. And through Elwoods mastery of the written word we are given audience to the workings of the spiritual, unseen in our physical realm. Biting social commentary and powerful, sometimes disturbing imagery usher us into a world in which an elusive Satan and his sometimes reluctant hordes confront the forces of Almighty God for domination... Our own. The Angelwalk Trilogy is nothing short of a work of genius. Both engaging and breathtaking as a novel and peppered with enough spiritual truths to be used as a devotional, Roger Elwood's Angelwalk Trilogy is essential reading for the literary Christian

WAKE UP CALL
THIS BOOK IS TRULY A GREAT PIECE OF CHRISTIAN FICTION. IT ANSWERS THE QUESTION IF SATAN HAS ANY POWER ON THE EARTH.IT ALSO SHOWS THAT GOD IS A FAIR GOD AND TRUE TO GOD'S WORD,HE LEAVES IT UP TO THE PERSON TO DECIDE WHAT THEIR DECISON WILL BE.THERE HAVE BEEN ALOT OF BOOKS THAT TALK ABOUT WHAT THE ANGELS MAY BE THINKING.IN MY OPINION,ANGELWALK MAY BE ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS THAT ADRESSES THE SUJECT.IF YOU LIKED ANGELWALK THEN YOU WOULD LOVE THE BOOK CALLED THE GLIMMERING MASK. IF YOU READ THIS BOOK ,E-MAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THOUGHT ABOUT IT.

Thought Provoking.
I have read the angelwalk series..and I can still remember the feeling of awe...as thoughts and ideas were sparked by Roger Elwoods words and his way of pointing out things in our Culture and in the world around us that I had never thought about before.
He opened My eyes to emotions and led My mind to brainstorming and re-evaluating circumstances and "political" at times; issues that I had once thought I was solute on. He inspired the most sincere inner look at My own christian philosophy..and with such ease..I am a devout christian..and I assure You..that his words opened My eyes..I would recommend this series of books to anyone who wants to take an inner look at themselves.

A Novelized Chick Tract
I read this book because I was stuck in a hospital with nothing else to read. This is the utterly implausible, contrived story of an angel who ushers one cookie-cutter Christian (and their cute little doggies) after another into a Family Circus-style Heaven. There's plenty of unintentional humor, but the funniest part is the essay about why profoundly mentally handicapped people make the best Christians (basically because Jesus hates it when you think for yourself). This is not a surprising philosophy, considering the breathtaking intellectual bankruptcy of Elwood's worldview.

Stedfast: Guardian Angel (Angelwalk saga no. 3)
I read this book in series order and absolutely loved it. Roger Elwoods presentation of the spirit of these angels is a wonderful eye opener. The concept of their struggle with what we humans do casts them in a totally different light. To become an observer with Steadfast watching Christ's walk through His life brings a whole new perspective on what He was like. The concept of Steadfast's ( and the other angels pain)creates a picture of angels being created in Gods image. Roger Elwood uses his imagination wonderfully but never stretches the truth of the Bible. I loved the entire series - it made me laugh, cry and rejoice all the while showing me a new insight into the mysterious world of Angels.
