Locating the Energy for Change: an Introduction to Appreciative Inquiry

Rich, well-written, multi-discipline, multi-sector treatment
An excellent treatment of this important participative change methodology, ranging from theoretical underpinnings to case examples to a walk-through of the process. Well-written, but also quite dense. No bullets, no matrices, no simplifying diagrams. Don't expect to pick it up and immediately use it as a practical guide. But it's a great resource for building your own guide.

The best investigative adventure ever published
I am a longtime gamer who probably has spent more on rolegaming then I can afford since the late 1980's. My shelves are filled with books for dozens of game-systems but Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP) remains one of my personal favourites.

This superlative product was originally published by Games Workshop as two separate books: Power Behind the Throne and Warhammer City - Middenheim. This Hogshead version has the full material from both books in one handy volume. The first section of the book, Power Behind the Throne details an extremely intricate conspiracy by the forces of Chaos in the city Middenheim.

A distinct contrast to the wimpy plots so prevalent in the fantasy roleplaying industry, this is a grade-A, master-level investigative scenario for the veteran player. The huge cast of characters each playing a part in the adventure, yet having motivations and plans of their own, make this adventure a real challenge for players and gamemasters.

This book should be on every gamer's shelf, regardless of which game system you play as an example of how it should be done. Be warned though, the deep roleplaying and many conversations required will bore the combat-oriented player to tears. Real roleplayers who fancy themselves as the fantasy equivalent of Poirot or Holmes will have the case of their lives to unravel.

The best book on evolution that I've ever read (and i've
read quite a few!) Just a great, plain-language explanation of the rise of life on Earth. How bacteria evolved, how fish evolved, how we evolved. The illustrations really make the book too, with gorgeous scenes of prehistoric life. Mr. Reader weaves the last 3.5 billion years into a smooth flowing narrative that really made me want to continue reading. I've never had that effect from a "scientific" book before! I can't believe it's out of print. Get this book back in print for the next generation!

How to be the parent we want to be........
In Why Can't I Be the Parent I Want to Be?, the authors assure parents that they already know what to do, but oftentimes fail to do what they know is right. This is usually due to some emotional obstacle that prevents parents from following through on their good intentions. The authors do a great job in explaining why parents get caught up in these emotional struggles, how to recognize problems and learn to be the parent they want to be.

Though written by psychologists (and with a foreword written by psychologist John Rosemond), the book - while scholarly - is quite easily understood and is an enjoyable read. They use the stories of three families to teach the various principles, which is one thing that makes the book so enjoyable. While the stories of the three families may not be identical to our own, there is much we can all relate to in them.

This book is for any parent who welcomes a common-sense approach to parenting. It also helps parents to assess their parenting style and then gives practical suggestions for change when needed, how to set parenting goals, and specific ways of getting there. The authors use the word "schema" quite a bit. They say that schemas are what we all use to make sense of the world, and that schemas help people create meaning about who they are. Schemas categorize and organize information. Knowing what schemas are is helpful to parents, they say, so parents won't have to struggle to be the parent they want to be. It was fascinating to learn what schemas are, how they are formed, and how the knowledge of schemas can be of help in parenting.

I especially found Chapter Five helpful and interesting. Entitled "Beyond Insight, Preparing for Action," it tells how to take action after we've gained the insight we need as parents, and these actions help us to make meaningful changes in our parenting. There are more exercises in this chapter to do which are fun, and helps us to understand further what our goals are and what we need to do to reach them. I found it quite helpful and enlightening and definitely recommend others try it, too.

I enjoyed reading, and learning from, this book very much, and I know others will, too. It is thoughtfully, creatively written and useful for all parents.

Recommended for anyone seeking to improve parenting skills.
Charles Elliott and Laura Smith collaborate to teach about parenting through the use of stories as the employ three families to take the reader on a journey toward improving themselves to become better, more effective parents. Each family present specific parenting problems: Debra and Quinton (the overprotective mother who blames her son's behavior problems on others and the son who constantly gets into trouble at school); Jennifer and Jerod (the mother who can't say no to her son and blames herself for his problems, and the son who faces a possible second stay in the detention center); Kenneth, Sally, Lindsey and Nick (Ken loves his wife and kids but is driving them away with his constant criticism and control, while Sally is ready to give up on their marriage, and their kids, Lindsey and Nick, retaliate with silence or sarcasm). Why Can't I Be The Parent I Want To Be? enables the readers to discover their own "schemas", their repetitive nature, and the power they wield as parents as its guides them toward self-understanding, self-acceptance, and innovative ways of changing both thought and behavior. By the time the last page is read and the book set down, the readers will have discovered how to be the parents that already exist in their hearts and hopes.

An Amazing Helpful Book!
This was a very helpful book for me! I am the parent of 4 very energetic kids and I have gone to many parenting classes and read lots of parenting books, all gave advice but I could never follow the advice. This book was written for the everyday parent in a language that even I can understand. They gave me advice and solutions to help control my temper and help me with some parenting advice that I really needed! My kids are more under control and listen to what I say! Thanks alot to the writers of this book! Me and my kids are doing alot better!

The Audubon Society Nature Guides - Deserts
A must have book for anyone hiking in the desert and anyone even just interested in the desert. Packed full of info about "everything" you will find in the desert .

Best designed guide
A most comfortable-to-use guide with a great layout & excellent quality in illustrations. Too bad it is out-of-print. Waterproof covers and sturdy cloth backstrip, made for prolonged use, we love it.

Excellent pictures and comprehensive
First you'll want to browse the beutiful photos, then read through the naratives. The book is comprehensive, covering plants, trees, insects, frogs, birds, even mammals. The photo section has a photo, a drawing, common and latin names, and area found for each entry. Photos are great and not too small. The book has narratives for the entries plus lots of general information about each of America's deserts. Good reference for desert lovers.

An excellent mystery and a wonderful read
This ranks as one of P.D. James' finer achievements. One of her longest novels both in scope and number of pages, A TASTE FOR DEATH once more proves James' talent for devising an intricate detective story and filling it with well-crafted characters and some of the most beautiful prose ever written. The story revolves around Commander Adam Dalgliesh's investigations into the murders of two men who have been found, their throats slit, in the vestry of a church. The plot is complex and, in addition to the intrigue of the mystery, explores questions of politics, society, and morality. This is a wonderful novel with an explosive climax, certain to be a treat for both Dalgliesh fans and lovers of contemporary literature.

P.D.James fans- 6 Stars! Kate Miskin up close enhances plot
-6 Stars! Superb, intricately plotted and riveting story.

...If you havent read P.D. James....it might be better to start with "Death of an Expert Witness". However, for a taste of P.D. James- this is an excellent choice!
Newcomers would still enjoy it, but may miss a little of the depth of character of the key players: Adam Dagliesh, a Scotland yard Detective with his own tragic past, who is also a published poet; and Sgt Kate Miskin, newly assigned to replace Dalgliesh's previous longtime assistant, wanting to make an impression, but plagued with problems in her personal life.

As a dedicated P.D. James fan, I would say this is even a step above her usual fascinating, exquisitely crafted stories!
Beautifully written and carefully plotted as usual.
This book is notable for the wonderful glimpses into the life of Dalgliesh's Sgt.: Kate Miskin. These personal moments dont distract, but further the story, and converge with the mystery plot to create a moving and exciting climax.

James always creates characters who are complex and beautifully described, but in this book she outdoes herself. She has created a rainbow of personalities ranging from the most endearing to the most odious characters.
In brief, a well-crafted, imaginative, wonderfully absorbing mystery. Only caveat would be a fairly bloody crime scene encountered by the detectives. Hopefully this wont put you off, as James never throws in gratuitous gore or violence. This was my absolute favorite P.D. James novel. If youve heard the authors name, and want to see if you like her without starting "at the beginning": This is a great choice.
In short: If you love mysteries, and dont own this book- RUN, dont walk to the "add to shopping cart" link!

For P.D. James fans- this one gets 6 stars!
If you havent read P.D. James....it might be better to start with "Death of an Expert Witness". However, as a P.D. James fan, I give it ***6 stars***! Beautifully written and carefully plotted as usual. This book is notable for the wonderful glimpses into the life of Dalgliesh's Sgt, Kate Miskin. These personal moments don't distract the reader, but add to and advance the story's plot. James always creates characters who are complex and beautifully described, but in this book she outdoes herself. We encounter the full range of personalities from the most endearing to the most odious characters she has ever created. This was (nearly) my absolute favorite P.D. James novel. Very good
This is a very good introduction to American grasslands. If it has any flaws, it's that it tries to do too much with the result that it doesn't do enough. In other words, from a scientific point of view, there may be many similarities between the grasslands east and west of the continental divide. But from a visitors point of view, the short, mixed, and tall grass prairie east of the divide stands alone.

Therefore, this guide would have been more useful to me if it had concentrated on one side of the divide or the other, and devoted more text to the grasses on that side.

Still, as far as I know, there is no other guide of this kind, so I'm glad to have it.

great reference !
This is an excellent resource -- great photo sections for mammals, trees, flowers, etc found in grasslands. Easy to cross-reference and find information quickly.

crayfish?
This is a very beautiful field guide, but where are the crayfish?

A beautiful, helpful gudebook!
This is the 3rd book in the "Audubon Society Nature Guides" series that I've purchased, and they continue to be a pleasure to read and use. For anyone who lives near, will be travelling to, or has a general interest in Wetlands, this book is an essential. Not only is it beautifully illustrated and easy to use, but it's also a great general guide to Wetlands in the US. I am in the Chicagoland region, and almost all of the book applies to our area. Highly reccomeded for anyone from the novice to Wetland professional.

It was just like the book, the talking eggs
It was just like the book the talking eggs. But I liked it. I liked the part when Myrtle plays the trick on the Prince Harold. I didn't like the way the people took advantage of rosella. she should have taken all her jewels back from prince Harold and given all the jewels to the poor people like she wanted instead of having the palace built. She should have taken charge of the situation! Inspite of how similar the story was to the talking eggs, I found it a fun, enjoyable read. Also, like in the book Ella Enchanted I felt empathy for the main character Rosella or Ella. With Ella you felt sorry for her how she always had to tell the truth, and with Rosella how people were using her for her jewels that came out of her mouth.

A Book You Will Regret Not Reading
Do you never read? I think that if you read "The Fairy's Mistake" you'll see reading in a whole new light. For all you people who do read it's also an amazing fantasy book. To find out the gist of the book read on.
In "The Fairy's Mistake" the Fairy Ethelinda rewards one of the Widow Pickering's daughters, Rosella so that whenever she speaks jewels come out. Her twin sister, Myrtle is punished so that whenever she talks slimy bugs, snakes, and spiders come out. When Rosella marries a greedy prince and Myrtle uses her voice to buy things they have to work together to make the prince listen.
I hope that you purchase (or read) this book because the plot and the authors writing style really drew me in. If you like fantasy books this book is a must-have. I hope that you have great sucess with this book. I know I did.

The Fairy's Mistake
Rosella is a girl that has a twin sister named Myrtle who makes Rosella do all the work. One day while Rosella is getting some water, a fairy spots her and decides to tranform herself into an old woman. When Rosella saw her, she gave the woman some water to drink. When the fairy discovers the kindness of Rosella she decides to cast a spell on her. The spell makes jewels come out of Rosella's mouth when she talks. This spell soon creates a few conflits. I thought this was a great book because there are lots of funny parts and I was really surprised at the end.
