Scientifically sound and easy to read
I laughed, I cried; two thumbs up! A science-based book, complete with citations of all the current literature, coupled with a readable, flowing style of writing. An important repository of all the scientific knowledge of these species in this region and issues affecting them (e.g., fire, climate change), yet engaging even to younger amateur herpetologists. Or, of interest to anyone who simply loves Yellowstone and the Tetons.

Heroic exploits, tragic figure
One has to look at the vicissitudes of life in the great tragic figures of history, Cortes, Columbus, Napoleon, etc., to find precedents in the relatively obscure life of Charles Edward Stuart, "The Great Young Pretender," Bonnie Prince Charlie.

Although towards the latter part of his life he came to stoop very low, he had, as a young man, decades earlier, reached out very high unto the stars with unwavering courage and determination in his conquest of Scotland and England. His defeat at Culloden in 1746 precipitated tragically what can only be described as the genocide of the Scottish Highlanders.

What a life! The life of Bonnie Prince Charlie is a study of human nature at its extreme. Belatedly, devastatingly, he found out the cruel fact that despite his forceful, determined personality, he was not the master of his own destiny. Be that as it may, he came to be vindicated.

This is a magnificent book of a great, albeit obscure, tragic figure of history.

Interesting even for professional comedians
I got this book out of my library to see if I could get some ideas about what postmodernism might mean to a professional stnad-up comic. The book is itself very funny in places. He accuses the professional philosophers Jacques Derrida and Jaques Lacan of having been Maoist, and claims that Gilles Deleuze and Jean-Francois Lyotard were not. I remember those people from a critical theory class I took from this professor ten years ago when he was saying the same thing.

Olson is always sort of idiosyncratic. He wore a cowboy hat and a paisley shirt to classes.

His boots were pink.

The book he has written here is also idiosyncratic. He mixes weird stuff: like Hegel and Wodehouse in one chapter, and ancient Greek philosophy and modern mystery stories in another chapter. It was fun to see him go in depth.

The basis for humor, as he once pointed out in a class, was that you take two conflicting schemas, two completely opposite ideas, and have them make love. Their boundaries tickle. It's like omparing motorcycles and oranges. There is always a way to do it. Goosebumps, they both roll, they both smell good, and so on, until you get a productive comparison that makes you laugh. Olson keeps working until he gets it.

Olson is doing that through this whole book. It's a hard thing to sustain because it can get so complex that it falls into apostasy. But that's where comedians should be headed. This is sit-down comedy, though. Sit down, and think about it.

I should maybe try to ompare apples and speedboats.

Darwin and the Mysterious Mr. X: New Light on the Evolutionists

New light on the true origin of The Origin of Species
If you thought you knew all there was to know about Charles Darwin and his evolutionary hypothesis, but you haven't read this book, then think again. Eiseley's research is impeccable, but his findings strike to the very heart of the Darwin legend, revealing a deeply flawed and basically dishonest seeker after self-aggrandisement. No wonder it's out of print! Despite his findings Eiseley remained a Darwinist and an evolutionist to his dying day. This book is no slice of creationist propoganda, it is a carefully written, highly readable review of the facts. If you have any interest in the history of evolutionism - pro or con - this book should be very near the top of your reading list.

Everything you wanted to know about missions
Imagine assembling over 300 missionaries, mission leaders and professors of missions to ask them any question you wanted. Now imagine that they addressed over 1400 topics. This new encyclopedic dictionary has done just that. With 700 topical articles, almost 500 short biographical articles, and hundreds of country profiles, the Evangelical Dictionary of World Missions is a veritable goldmine of up-to-date information on missions.

The authors include people from East and West, North and South; practioners and teachers. All have written in non-technical vocabulary and evaluate their assigned topic(s) in light of evangelical thought. The book is decidedly Christian and missiological in tone.

There are short bibliographical notes at the end of many articles and a good indexing system.

Dive in anywhere and enjoy the learning experience.

Fossil Feud is an informative and entertaining book.
Mr. Holmes's love affair with, and possibly his night dreams (hopefully less traumatic than those of Mr. Cope) of dinosaurs reach embodiment in Fossil Feud. A result of over ten years' research, this book is informative and easy to read. The text is not only child-friendly but educational for adults like myself who have had little previous exposure to these fascinating creatures of yore. Mr. Holmes's scientific and historical exploration is detailed without being tedious, leading to a smoothly flowing narrative (as a historical writer, I know how difficult this can be!) I found the use of period photographs and drawings and the illustrations of Mr. Clement to be very engaging.

In addition to explaining the benefits and liabilities of scientific research as lived out by Messrs. Cope and Marsh, the author provides many other useful features within the covers of Fossil Feud. Mr. Holmes gently encourages the reader's further exploration of dinosaur lore by including a list of rules for what makes a dinosaur a dinosaur, diagrams of basic anatomical and physiological features of a dinosaur, a geologic time line, a listing of the 335 genera of dinosaurs in the order in which they were discovered, a reading list, and a listing of North American dinosaur museums.

Fossil Feud is a valuable tool, both educational and entertaining, which leaves no stone unturned, as it were, in its goal of completeness and accessibility. I highly recommend it.

A Blueprint of Life
Are the major oracles of antiquity -- the I"Ching, The Tarot and Astrology -- unrelated in their approach and viewpoints, or do they reflect common, archetypal principles which form "a spiritual blueprint" of creation? The authors suggest the latter and not only elaborate this blueprint, but also create an oracle ideal for our global society. The genius of this book is its appeal to both layman and scholar. Teachers and professors will appreciate "The Global Oracle" as a new subjective discipline of knowledge. Everyone else will enjoy consulting this oracle due to its simple, clear and articulate guidance.
