A Kind and Gentle Leader
The first book I read by Mr. Holton was a similar book, just about U. S. Grant. I liked that one a lot (I have a review here also), so much so that I went ahead and got this one too. I figured that I'd give both sides a fair chance...

Well, I was not disappointed in the least. The style is the same as the Grant volume, and the format is the same. None the less, it reads very well and is very informative, although not as entertaining as I would have liked, thus the 4 stars. One thing for sure, you'll get to know Lee very well reading this book. And there are many lessons to be had from the reading, possibly one on every page, if you feel so inclined.

As with the Grant volume, Mr. Holton takes one area of leadership and reports how Lee acted in regards to that item (Patriot Voice, Duty are 2 examples). Each discussion is contained on one page! A very good use of words by the writer makes this work. Then it's on to the next, then the next, the next, and so on. One can read one page and think about it, or take a couple of hours and polish off the whole book!! I perferred the slower method.

However you choose to read this bbok, make sure that you do read it, and the Grant volume also. You'll get a good look at 2 very important military minds of our short history. You'll also learn some important lessons on how to deal with people and situations, in both business and personal life. Well done Mr. Holton. Thank you!

A Different Look at Birthdays
Birthdays are intensely personal events, some happy, others bittersweet. This book provides insights into how celebrities reacted to, celebrated, mulled over and contemplated their own birthdays or those of relatives and friends. Among the little-known tales: What Bob Dylan did on his 30th, Marilyn Monroe's "steamy" rendition of "Happy Birthday" to her "friend," JFK, the gift sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov bought for himself and the birthday poem Anne Frank's father wrote her while the family was hiding from the Nazis. It's a gift book that both entertains and puts perspective into birthdays.

The Soul of Growing
Dr. Hoffman has brought together a myriad of highly articulated statements offering insight into the heart and soul of graduating. The hallmark of every entry is a love of life, a call to the unselfish creative life, the conquest of fear, and of the goodness and nobility of serving others.

When one reads a Hoffman book one must be prepared to think deeply and to consider the well spring of your life. Every selection offers a taste of wisdom. Practicality is clearly stated and spirituality too. The Creative Spirit of Life can be seen hidden deeply in the words and pages of this splendid gift book.

If one wants to turn "Graduation Day" into a spiritual event that addresses the inmost heat and soul of a person,,,then this book is a true gift to the soul of the graduate.

It would be a wise "graduate" that considered the meaning of this marvelous little book and it would be a wise SOUL that offered this treasure as a gift to a graduate. I recomend it.

Beautiful Missouri Pictorials
This book has some very beautiful pictures of Missouri. It shows Missouri's versatilty through some of the great cities and vast country and farmland scenes. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is interested in, or loves Missouri.

Showing Missouri
This book is just a beautiful pictoral of Missouri and I'm using it to show people outside of the USA where I live and how beautiful our state is. The book purchased was great - shipping seemed a little high - so not much benefit from getting it at the bookstore.

good book for understanding the fretboard
This book is a good sequel to FL it goes more in depth into how the fretboard works with patterns and teaches different types of chords, arpeggios, and scales.I would say don't get this book if you didn't get the first book unless you have a decent amount of knowledge in music theory;I doubt you will undertand everything; maybe you could with time but, if you got FLI,FLII will be much easier to understand.Don't get this book and only this book if you want to actually learn how to play music this is only a good book if you want to understand the fretboard like a maniac very useful for understanding the fretboard though.

A great book!
Quite simply the best guitar book I have ever held in my hands

Fairly nice book...with a few flaws
The color pictures are numerous and nice....the price guide in the back is a pain...it would be much better if the prices were on the same page as the picture. I think the price paid for this book was more than fair.

Colorful Pictures Do Not Make A Great Book
Granted, the color pictures do make for a nice book, however, I found many of the pictures to not show the pattern clearly. Sometimes it was the item they chose to show that caused the difficulty--patterns on cups, candlesticks, and vases do not give me what I need to see to verify the pattern on a bowl. I believe a bit more variety of pictures is need for many of the patterns. I would rather see a picture of a collection with a clear detail of the pattern. As far as the price guide goes, at first I found it inconvenient to flip to the back of the book to check the prices, but I got used to it and put up with it. Carnival glass resources are few, so this book is out there, but in my opinion, it's not a great book or a good value.

An Excellent Reference On Carnival Glass
This Edwards & Carwile Encyclopedia is an excellent reference book for the "Carnival Glass" enthusiast. It has clear color photos, large print, is alphabetically listed, has informative descriptions, and a detailed price list. I never go shopping for carnival glass without taking this book; it's a necessary shopping guide. I always find the piece shown, described, and priced in this book. SM

YOU may encounter a vampire or even wake up in a coffin!
Learning that "you" are a nerdy-looking kid with glasses isn't exactly an auspicious way to begin a story. For some of us, that's quite enough of a nightmare. But in BITING FOR BLOOD, that's just the beginning. As the protagonist of several possible adventures, you may encounter blood-drinking neighbors, drugged cookies, a vanishing journalist ... you might even wake up in a coffin! And then again, you might not. It all depends on your own choices in this book that starts with a strange-looking new neighbor, missing persons, and a deer found drained of blood.

BITING FOR BLOOD is nicely, if not too generously, illustrated with bats, pointy-toothed vampires, and, yes, "you": You at the soda shop with friends; you fleeing an attacking bat; you asleep in bed with a vampire whetting her fangs over you. The possible endings range from chilling to silly, with most falling somewhere between. Before you arrive at one, you may be chased by a real vampire, cornered by a growling dog, or scared silly by ... something ... pounding at the window. Quick, get the garlic!

Most of the endings have an inconclusive flavor, maybe to encourage readers to see if another set of choices will yield something more satisfying. The stories themselves are too short to build a very high level of suspense, but for the book's intended audience -- younger readers -- there's enough action and mystery to keep the pages turning until all possibilities have been explored.

Caution: Vampires!
An amazing book, the sort that attracts your eye in a libary or bookstore. And its as good on the inside as it is on the outside! Whether your a vampire fan, choose-your-own-adveture-stlye-book fan, or even just looking for something to read, read this and you will be mesmerised! I was! the night I read this I was clutching a cross I made from sticks (I'm allergic to garlic!).

Should be called "The Tea Cookbook"
The book contains only very basic information about tea itself, on the first few pages. Then the author presents a lot of recipes for flavoured teas, iced teas, and desserts.

I book isn't practical even for beginning tea connoiseurs, but is rather recommended to people who don't know anything about tea and only want or need to learn the very basics and a few recipes for sweets.

There are a few nice photos in the book (but then again most of them display the desserts or iced teas...)

Vegetarians beware: very few of the recipes are vegetarian.

Best I have
I have many tea books and yet I keep going back to this one. It is easy to read, informative, and the recipes are great. I have tried many of them. The photography is wonderful. I love it

OPEN SOME NEW DOORS IN YOUR LIFE
Having spent the past seven years volunteer travelling around the world for my vacations, I can honestly attest to the fact that this extremely helpful reference book was my starting point for research into the culturally-enriching, service-oriented travel experiences which have changed my life. Provided inside this handy book are the names of the volunteer organizations which arrange and organize the travel, listings of the type of volunteer work and skills required and all of the necessary logistics. (Actually the only skill often required is a desire to serve and to learn.)

The second half of the book contains numerous brief volunteer journals where the reader can obtain a clearer picture of how this type of travel impacts the recipients of the service work and more importantly perhaps how these deeply moving and life-altering experiences greatly enhance the life of the volunteer.

I have met people of all ages and from all walks of life on these incredible journeys. If you have a bit of adventure in your blood and a desire to serve and especially to learn from another culture's experience...investigate this book...it may open some brand new doors in your life.

A great resource for anyone who wants to be a volunteer.
This book covers all kinds of volunteerism, from ecologic to medical. From the USA to the far corners of the world. Not only does it contain volumes of information on agencies seeking volunteers, it also has a great cross-referenced index, so that you can easily choose a "volunteer vacation" to fit your interests, schedule, and your wallet.

Won't teach you how to code it..but a good reference book
This book is horrible if you want to learn how to code JINI. The good points are the wonderful RMI primer in the Appendix, and nice explanations of what is actually going on for each aspect of a JINI network, chapter by chapter.
This book can serve as a nice conceptual reference when trying to understand JINI.
The wrox book on JINI is also very good, and good to learn the coding.

Also, don't expect any email to this author to be answered...

Well formulated, thorough and still easily accessible.
This is just the book I have been looking for! It explains Jini in all needed details, starting from the assumption that you know Java. It leads you the way through what exists prior to Jini, including Corba and DCOM, and what key issues they don't handle. It explains what Java makes possible, and what is needed on top of that.

One of the many strong points of the book, is that it looks at each topic from several angles. And it explains and stresses all the small, seemingly unimportant aspects that really make a big difference. "What is the big deal" type of questions, with corresponding informative answers.

The five key elements of Jini is explained at several levels of detail. In the introductory chapter they are listed with a one liner each, followed by a paragraph or two on each of them. In later chapters they are looked at in all needed detail.

Edwards is very conscious about each word and description used. There is never any misunderstanding what he wants to explain, and what each term that is used means. In this kind of a book that is one of the most important aspects.

This book is highly recommended!

Best and most comprehensive JINI Book
As a distributed computing evangelist, I found this book the most complete reference with live and clean examples.

This book also has tons of sample code and assures that the reader understands JINI concepts - as a developer.

The book is ofcourse suitable for developers who are conversant and comfortable with atleast intermediate Java concepts and have a basic network knowledge.

I would further say that the book covers both specs and implementation and has helped our research facilities with considerable exposure to the subject and we have included it in out Advanced and Distributed Java Computing curriculum.

a very useful reference on pattern glass
There is good general information on glass terminology and on some of the important glass makers of the era. Examples are of many different pieces and there is a very informative paragraph on each piece. Most of the photos are clear. However, my one complaint is that some of the photos, in particular of the clear glass, are not clear enough to show the details of the patterns. This makes identification nearly impossible in these cases. I still find this a helpful reference that is also readable and attractive.

The best general pressed glass guide for the period
One runs into a lot of pressed and pattern glass that isn't depression or carnival glass. Many examples aren't marked in any way and one has no way of knowing what they are or when they are made. This book comes to the rescue. Its format is picture after picture, most in color, with brief descriptions. So, one can peruse the pages looking for a match even if one knows absolutely nothing about a given piece. This has helped me a lot. At the end of the book are value estimates for all the patterns shown in the book. Great quality paper and good binding, so this book will last a long time with heavy use. Buy it and carry it with you so you can find out about those neat looking glass items you find but don't recognize.

Standard Encyclopedia of Pressed Glass
This book is a God send! As a new antique Glass seller and collector, I find this book to be Heavenly! It's not only packed full of Beautiful Colored Photos, but also states current values and some of the history behind these pieces of wonderful Old Pressed Glass! You Can't go wrong Buying this book! It will pay for it's self in no time!
