The series is the most enjoyable reading I've ever done.
I bought the series some years ago and have lost one and would like to replace it. I would also like to have my books autographed by Mr. Eckert.

I have recommended this writer to many friends and have bought the soft cover prints for several.

The best book I have ever read!
Like many of the others in this space, The Frontiersman was required reading in an Ohio History course I was taking in college several years ago! I am not an avid reader by any means but this book, as well as the other Winning of America series books was one I couldn't put down! I am fortunate to have been born in Chillicothe Ohio and currently live near Circleville Ohio in Pickaway County. This area is the main focus of the Frontiersman book where Simon Kenton and Tecumseh once roamed. This book gave me goose-bumps when I read of some of the atrocities that occurred so close to home. I also had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Eckart. I was visiting the Outdoor Drama at Sugarloaf Mountain, near Chillicothe. Tecumseh was being portrayed on the outdoor stage there. For a truly exciting experience, read this book, then see many of the stories acted out, on or very near the actual spot. You feel like you living it all over again!

The Unsoma
I first read this book the first year it was published. Then, it brought to life the history of a place where I grew up, near the Little Miami River. Recently, I read, "A Sorrow in His Heart". Finishing that book was like a phoenix rising. I now understand more about my native state and its history, I can feel the draw of the land and can now better understand the reasons for the violence. It also brought me back to "The Frontiersmen". Allan Eckert's writing is like a painter who uses broad, sweeping strokes on his canvas. He explains why Kentucky and Ohio became a hallowed ground. He weaves together geography, culture, history and sociology. The reader clearly understands the duality of good and evil to be found among men of both races. Eckert also portrays two uncommon men, leaders who placed the needs of others above themselves. Kenton and Tecumseh truly represent the finest qualities desired in a leader and Tecumseh, comes to the forefront as one of America's greatest heroes. Too many modern Americans sadly do not know the depth of genius that presided in this Kispokotha Shawnee (even though whites of just one generation after his death still honored his greatness (exemplified by the naming of the Sherman baby, William Tecumseh Sherman). Here is a leader for any age and time. As he had his own unsoma (guardian spirit in Shawnee), may his example become as an unsoma for us all today. This is a powerful book about a great episodic history along the Ohio River. I loved it!

One of my top ten favorite books.
I remember well the first time I picked up a copy of The Frontiersman and started reading. I was mesmerized, that's the only way to describe it. Before that time I wasn't much interested in history, but I had read a couple of Eckert's outdoor-type books and liked his style, so I decided to give The Frontiersmen a try. I've never looked back. Not only have I collected and read every one of Eckert's Narratives of America, I've become an avid reader of American frontier history and now, twenty-plus years later, have a collection of well over three hundred volumes of Americana. The Frontiersman is the one that got me started, and it will always hold a prominent place on my book shelf. Thank you Mr. Eckert for all your years of research and labor in bringing us these excellent books!

Tecumseh: An American Hero
Having read Wilderness Empire, Blue Jacket and The Frontiersmen, A Sorrow in the Heart, ranks as the author's finest contribution in helping modern Americans come to an understanding of the geography, historical context and people - both common and uncommon, who shaped the history of the Old Northwest. In my youth I canoed long stretches of the Little Miami River, had hiked from Old Town to the George Rogers Clark Memorial and had bicycled the warriors trail. I am going back to Ohio this Spring, with my copy of this book, to trace the life of a man whom I knew in the most general of terms but now, as an adult, place in my pantheon of true heroes. I credit this book for my rediscovery of these men of uncommon courage and my deep admiration for this Kispokotha Shawnee. Eckert paints sweeping portraits of events and men in a manner that celebrates their strengths, exposes their foibles and always, treating them as the men they were. A must read!

The definitive Tecumseh biography
This is an outstanding book about the greatest leader (white, black, or Native American) to ever step foot on the North American continent. The author uses an incredible amount of research to trace Tecumseh's life from birth to death. Eckert's narrative style of writing makes the book very enjoyable to read. I have read many biographies of Tecumseh and this is by far the most detailed and probably the most accurate. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Native Americans and their history especially if you live in the Ohio valley. The fact that I now know the history of the area makes me proud to live there. I also recommend any of Eckert's other books. He is an amazing author.

ALLAN ECKERT MAKES FICTIONAL HISTORY A JOY TO READ!!!!!
GROWING UP ON THE BANKS OF THE OHIO, I'VE HEARD EVERY LEGEND THERE IS CONCERNING TECUMSEH. I USED TO WALK TO THE SHAWNEE BURIAL MOUNDS WHICH ARE AN ARROW SHOT FROM MY PARENT'S HOME IN SILOAM, KY. I OFTEN TRIED TO IMAGINE WHAT IT WOULD HAVE BEEN LIKE TO LIVE BACK THEN. WHILE NO HISTORIAN WILL EVER BE ABLE TO DECIFER WHAT IS TRUTH AND WHAT IS FOLKLORE. ALLAN W. ECKERT IS ABLE TO SEND YOU BACK IN TIME AND PLACE YOU AMONGST THESE HISTORICAL FIGURES. AND WHILE THIS WORK IS FICTIONAL IT IS ALSO BASED ON REAL CHARACTERS. ALLAN W. ECKERT IS TRULY AN ARTIST. WITH THE PAGE AS HIS CANVAS AND FACTS, MYTHS, AND LEGENDS, AS HIS INKS. HE PAINTS AN EXCELLENT PORTRAIT OF THIS LEGENDARY SHAWNEE'S LIFE.EXCELLENTLY WRITTEN AND RESEARCHED.

Best French and Indian War novel ever
While not as well known as "The Frontiersmen" and "A Sorrow in Our Heart", this is another of Eckert's best. This tells the story of the French and Indian War in North America, in particular, it follows the life and times of Sir William Johnson, the British Superintendent of Indian Affairs who nearly singlehandedly kept the majority of the Iroquois Confederacy allied to the Crown during a time of great crisis as they clashed with the French and their Indian allies for control not only of the Ohio Country, but the whole of the Continent. This is good history and it makes for great reading. What is really great about this book is that it captures the feel of a long forgotten time and brings to life events like the dramatic capture of Fort Niagara and the valiant struggle of the eastern woodland Indians to preserve their race in the face of two warring white factions. Great stuff.

Painless History with the verve of a novel
Eckert is indeed a master story-teller. He recounts in a lively and readable fashion the complex history and personalities of the French and Indian war period, from Montreal and Quebec to Detroit, Pittsburg and Albany. As with his other books, he weaves the lives and actions of well-known figures with those who are less known, but no less important, in this case from Pontiac, Montcalm, and Benjamin Franklin to Sir William Johnson and many lesser chiefs of the Iroquois. Eckert's books are thoroughly enjoyable and highly accurate, an unbeatable combination.

Engrossing history of the French and Indian War.
Mr. Eckert is a master story teller. His incisive, detailed accounting of the great battle for North America between Native Americans and European empires is pure American History. Yet, his book reads as an action novel! Eckert focuses on a few central characters and then broadens the canvass to create a poignant telling of the early American frontier. Eckert favors neither native or newcomer but instead presents in graphic detail, the pain, joy, privation, and glory of the struggle to change America. I strongly recommend this book to all with an appreciation of frontier history, but I especially refer it to those who normally would not consider historical accounts.

I agree...it's great
By far the best and most engaging chronicle of the border wars of the Ohio River Valley, Dark and Bloody River takes us back to the time and place first encountered in Eckert's other great book, The Frontiersmen. This was the first Eckert novel I read and it hooked me from the start. It begins with a description of the ancient Indians to first settle the land that would later become known to some as Kentucky and the Ohio Valley, and to others as "That Dark and Bloody Ground". It ends with the closing of the eastern frontier in Ohio in the early 19th century and the twilight of the Indian way of life. What comes in between is a classic tale of historic adventure and horror. Eckert is known for his great historical novels and this is one of the best. Here we again encounter some familiar characters like Daniel Boone, Simon kenton, and Simon Girty. Eckert gives one of the most sympathetic interpretations of the white renegade Girty to date, portraying him here as a troubled frontiersman who was more a victim of years of character assasination than the satanic monster he was remembered as. Here we also meet Lewis Wetzel and Eckert makes clear that Wetzel, though hailed as a frontier hero in his time and for decades to come, was most surely a cold-hearted killer, intent upon exterminating the Indian race from the face of North America. This is really a great book and despite being some 600 pages, has often been reread.

That Dark And Bloody River
Hey! Great reading. I never knew how many people lay at the bottom of the Ohio. Both early settlers and Indians alike. This is an excellent book for early history. Mr. Eckert must be congradulated for his insight and manner of writing. It is a must read.

My hometown
This book brought the Ohio River alive for me. I grew up near the banks of the Ohio, near Wheeling, and I saw every detail along the river banks in the struggle to maintain (in native eyes) and to settle (in white eyes). This series of narratives from Allan Eckert are the best resourse available for truly learning about our collective heritage....native and conquerer. The style lends itself to bringing the history to life. I cannot rave enough about this series of books. I encourage anyone interested in settlement history to read this book and the others in the series. Thank you, Mr. Eckert, for writing about my home and history.

The Court Martial of Daniel Boone

Fascinating
For most of us, our knowledge of Daniel Boone begins and ends with Fess Parker's t.v. shows in the 1960's. Allan Eckert's book, The Court Martial of Daniel Boone, is based on actual facts, but is written in a captivating novel style. I found the book to be fascinating. In modern times Daniel Boone is thought of as a frontier hero. In his day, however, there were many people who were suspicious and resentful of him. Boone's court martial is an example of how an honest man, doing the right thing, can be "bushwacked" by not-so-honest rivals. If you like true stories about American frontiersmen, this book is for you.

Excellent Account of the Little-Known Trial of Daniel Boone
This is Allan Eckert's novelization of the little-known incident of the military court-martial of that famous Kentucky frontiersman, Daniel Boone. Boone was a legend in his own time, a well respected hunter and frontier soldier and was said to be as able in the woods as any Indian.

In February 1778, Boone has been leading a party of 27 men from Fort Boonesboro who were captured by Shawnee Indians while making salt at the Blue Licks. Boone was adopted into the tribe and given the Shawnee name Sheltowee (Big Turtle) and spent several months living and hunting among the Indians before finally escaping back to Booneboro just in time to help fend off a siege of the isolated fort by the British and Indians. After the battle, Boone was accused of treason and complicity with the enemy by several of his enemies, especially Col. John Bowman, who served as prosecutor in the court martial proceedings against him. Boone shows that he can be as sly and sharp in the courtroom as he is in the wilderness.

Most people know only the myths and legends about Daniel Boone and this book does a great service by providing insight into the reality of the man, as well as presenting an intersting and riveting true story.

Return to Hawk's Hill
I chose to read this book.... I was looking for a novel that seemed interesting. I also wanted to read a book with a different genre from most of the other books I've read...
The main character in this story is a young boy named Ben Mac Donald. Ben Mac Donald has two older sisters,... . and one older brother. Ben is the youngest of the four and also the quietest. He seems to be on the reserved side and it seems like he enjoys being home alone, and keeping to himself. Ben is also fascinated with nature, and loves to go and frolic with the wildlife on the prairie. At one point in the story, Ben even stays with a mother badger in her den...
I really enjoyed this book and I found it very interesting. I love the adventures that he goes on. Sometimes the adventures he goes on are to save the lives of others, other times it's to get away with his own. I give this book a score of 4+/5-; because the book just pulled me in I couldn't put it down. I really enjoy adventures both in books and in real life, and this book had plenty of adventures to keep me reading. I hope to read the next volume of this book series titled Incident at Hawk's Hill and experience more heart racing adventures that Ben Mac Donald goes on. Hopefully, none too dangerous though.

A GOOD BOOK!
This sequal to Incident at Hawk's Hill was a great book. It was nice to find out that Ben MacDonold did well in school. When the familie's adventure starts, they didn't know that it would lead to a friendship with indians. This book was full of incredible suspense and action.

Ben's Great Adventure
This book is about a six- year- old boy named Ben. Ben lives back in the days were the people ride horses. He is very small for his age.One day he was playing outside and he started chasing a prairie chicken. Then he got lost in the prairie called Hawk's Hill. Ben knew a storm was going to hit. The shelter that he found was a badger den. I like the book because it is very exciting; one very exciting part is when Ben sees a badger. This book is a very exciting book to read for all ages especially animal lovers everywhere!

The World of Opals
A fascinating, well concieved and presented tome on opals. It is both a good read and a good reference. However, I find it extremely vexing when the text directs me to a photo of a colorful opal only to discover that photos accompanying the text are in black and white. How asinine on the part of the publisher to effect such economies on a book that cost over $90.00. The photos might just have well been of anthracite coal lumps.

Both the author and the reading public would have been much better served if the publisher had eliminated entirely these black and white photos which proved such a source of frustration.

I'm aware there is a 16 page signature of color. It would not have cost much more to have made this a 32 page sig amalgamating the text pictures. If this book goes into subsequent printings I hope what I perceive as a glaring error is corrected.

Again, let me stress that I enjoyed the book immensely, but what could have been an A+ tome is a B-.

An extensive history of opal mining with special finds noted
For the last 10 years, opals have mystified me with their uniqueness. I wanted to know more!!. Boy did I get an eye full. This book is full of history(before the time of Christ), science(but not overwhelming), locations(general), and special finds that have been made since recorded history. If I found a person looking for more information about the opal, I would surely recommend this book. I was hoping that it would have contained more information concerning the lapidary side of the industry. Even though I was disappointed in this area, I was extremely pleased in the information that the book shared.

The definitive guide to opals!
This is an Amazing Book! If you like opals, gemstones, or jewelry, you will love all the information provided in this extremely thorough, and well written book. The book takes you through the way opals are really formed. (Satisfying the scientist in us all). Then it takes you into the history of all the amazing opal finds around the world and where to find your own opals. (satisfying anyone who wants to know how the opal trade works). It also wonderfully describes the worlds most magnificent opals ever found. Including one of the largest solid opals ever found, The Bonanza found by Keith Hodson. (capturing the jewelry lovers).
If you want to know anything about opals, you've got to get this book!
