A Calculus Textbook for the Average College Student
Calculus with Applications is a great textbook for college students from which to learn calculus. It's difficult to write a review on a textbook, especially one that covers mathematics, but as textbooks go, this one is damn good. As a college student pursuing a degree in Business, I have been exposed to materiel covering numerous disciplines. In each instance, I either grasped the subject matter immediately or struggled greatly through the rest of the semester. When taking my calculus class last Fall, I had no qualms once I bought and read through this book.

I found this textbook to be a nice approach to a sterile subject I once learned in high school. The strength of this textbook lies in its presentation of "real-life" examples, such as how calculus is used to compute both periodic and continuous compound interest. When most people hear of calculus, it might conjure up images of long algebraic computations only scientists use to find the meaning of the universe or what engineers require to build the latest nuclear reactor. What this book does is to allay those misconceptions and presents a practical approach to "real world" calculus applications. One does not need to understand astrophysics or financial reports to learn calculus. This book covers calculus theory, and as the title suggests, its application. When covering topics such as differentiation, this book will not ask dull questions such as "find the slope of the tangent at the given point on the curve...." Every math textbook is prone to these types of questions, but this text presents those types of examples only when necessary. This book is not going to make you enjoy math or make you want to run to college's Registrar's office to change your major. It will demonstrate where and how calculus is used outside of the heavy sciences. It presents material clearly, provides an applicable scenario, solves the problem, and explains the answer. And like any other math textbook, follow-up questions are included to reaffirm concepts and odd-numbered answers are provided in the back of the book to solidify understanding.

I want to stress these points: this book is focused in its approach, practical in its application, and geared toward the average college student. This text is ideal for college students who need to learn college-level mathematics and don't want to be bored by finding the volume of a cube or the area under a curve. This is not to say these subjects aren't approached and outlined, however the nature of this book is teach calculus theory without driving students into an intellectual stupor. Calculus with Applications is not a coloring book either. It requires a fundamental understanding of linear algebra, graphing theory, and logarithmic computation, to name a few. My point is: one does not need be Einstein, a Math major, or an engineer to grasp and use the concepts presented in this text or a regular basis. Whether its how to calculate mortgage costs, earnings on a savings account, the percentage of sales increase in a given year, or dare I say it, the growth rate of bacteria, any college student will find this textbook and its concepts helpful in either their academic pursuits or real-life trials.

A very interesting read...
This book is very informative and well written. It describes all of the killings, the trials, and the outcome of the trials of both Caril Ann Fugate and Charles Raymond Starkweather. It begins by giving you a reporters view of the crimes and the manhunt for the murderous couple. It also has one chapter just about the confessions of Charles Starkweather. A very good read. I would highly reccommend this book to anyone who is interested in this story about a couple on a rampage.

Overall a Fine Physics Text
I thought this book explained physics concepts in a way that was clear and understandable. I liked the fact that there were numerous examples throughout the text, a generous use of helpful illustrations and also a wide variety of problems (some very challenging) that helped me to prepare for exams. I also found the Student Solutions Manual (which works through selected problems) to be a great help. I think it is safe to say that physics is one of the most difficult subjects to learn (it made my Calculus II class seem like a walk in the park) and that succeeding in a physics class requires many, many hours of dedication and hard work. There is no shortcut to mastering this subject, and unfortunately, there is also no such thing as a text (no matter how excellent) that can make physics "easy" to learn. Of course, there were times when certain concepts in the text were not clear to me, and that's when I saw my instructor for help. Overall, I thought that this was a fine text that helped me to see that while learning physics is rigorous, it can also be a lot of fun!

BORING.
As a freshman nutrition major, this book was required for my English 101 class. I found it to be boring, unhelpful, and plodding. The author's instructions for activities leave you depressed and annoyed, and teachers have to jump around a lot to instruct properly.

This might be a good reference book, and perhaps even a book for secondary/high schools, but not for a college English class.

Flexible and comprehensive!
I also teach "post-secondary English" but I have found the St. Martin's Guide to Writing to be a very useful resource because it gives students (and me) much support for the writing process, interesting readings for writing models and discussion, and, given the current high cost of college textbooks, its comprehensiveness means I don't have to require students to purchase more than one book! St. Martin's includes a writing handbook to review foundational writing skills. Chapters on taking tests and building a portfolio are also helpful, but what I like best about this book is its careful attention to supporting how we write with step-by-step explanations and examples. This care to detail is very useful for my students who are entirely online!

Good instruction
I consider this book to be one of the best how-to-write books I've read. I'm not a college student, but a writer who wants to sharpen skills, and I have found many sections of the book to be extremely helpful--the section on writing profiles, for example, and the one on writing autobiographical essays, just to name two. I've also found the information contained in other sections--such as Narrating, Illustrating, Comparing and Contrasting, Field Research--to be invaluable. I'm so glad I came across this book! I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a detailed plan for learning to be an excellent writer.

Nothing New Here
On the plus side, this book has nicely artistic erotic sketches and a few tasteful photos, but on the whole, unless you know nothing about sex and are starting off from scratch, you won't find much new in this book. The book was considered hot stuff when it first came out, but let's not forget it was also still taboo to have a good heart to heart about S-E-X. This is a nice book to page through in a book store, but don't waste your money buying it.

More writing and talking about sex, than how to do it
I picked up this highly priced book for my collection of "sexual techniques" books. I wont go as far as saying that its terrible, or that its wonderful.

I thought that it had way to much writing in it, just random talking about history of sex and other stuff like that. It needs to have more about how to go about doing the possisions etc.

The pictures are all drawings, other than a few in the beginning, but the drawings are old looking and a little dull.

One good thing that I found about the book is the slang that they used in it though. It is hard to find a book that uses slang terms rather than the correct way. I have quite a few sex books, and this is the only one that goes far enough to use the terms "pussy" and "dick", rather than, "vagina" and "penis". I mean, come on, we all know that most people in bed dont use the term "vagina".

If you are looking for more of a history on sex, get it. If you want detail, pass it up.

not bad
seller had said that the book was almost new. but, it had a tear in the back cover. however, the transaction was good.

A workable text but nothing special
As a college writing instructor, I've used several texts for freshman composition, including this one. While Axelrod and Cooper cover the bases from pre-writing through revision and include a variety of interesting essays for analysis, this is just another composition text. Visually, it is unexciting, and the impact of technology on writing today is not addressed as it should be. Also overlooked are the needs of international students and students for whom English is a second language. Bottom line: it's easy to find other texts that are better than this one.

Blech
This book totally failed to explain the concept of torque to me, I spent one hour reading the torque chapter twice and it failed to show me. Then I asked my friend online and he was able to explain it to me in less than a minute. This book is only good for the problem sets, which occasionally have a cameo from a Warner Brothers cartoon and one picture of Raymond Serway on a bed of nails. You will not be able to teach yourself physics concepts if you use this book, so if your professor assigns it, I recommend you go to class. Maybe that's why he or she assigned it in the first place.

A High School Student's Perspective
I used this book for physics my sophomore year, and I have mixed feelings regarding the book. On one hand, the text does not clearly and concisely explain concepts, but on the other hand, the end-of-chapter summaries and the practice problems were great preparation for tests. I doubt you will find more difficult problems than those this author gives, and your teacher would have to be a sadist to test you with problems harder than these. As another reviewer stated, you must couple this book with the lessons of a teacher - it would be very difficult to attain a firm grasp of the concepts based on this book alone. But if you're looking for concise lists of equations and challenging applications, this book will serve you well.

Excellent Book
Excellent Book... the book is easy to read and does and great job of explaining concepts and problem. I used it for my AP Physics B class because the book we were using was horrible. I got a five (out of five) on my exam.

Error filled text.
I had used an earlier edition of this book in one of my courses years ago and found it to be full of errors. I should have examined this 5th edition more carefully before I chose it as the text for a course this year. I looked at the early chapters, and they seemed to be okay. Since I didn't have many other options at the time and the coverage was at the right level for my undergraduate polymer chemistry course, I went with it. The problem I have found is that the book is full of errors, poorly written, and very poorly edited.

For example, the mechanisms given in section 7.16 would not pass muster in any sophomore organic chemistry course. They omit steps, leave out electron pairs, have arrows pointing in the wrong direction, and show electron pairs moving to atoms that already have a full complement of electrons.

As an example of poor editing in section 7.6, aramids are defined in one paragraph and then defined again in the very next paragraph and then still again a few paragraphs later. It's a though these paragraphs were cut and pasted from someplace, but never read together. Kevlar is also called "Kevlor" in this section.

Some other errors include calling an alkoxide ion a "carbanion", making references to data in a table when the data isn't there, referencing the wrong table in an earlier chapter, and even referencing the wrong early chapter.

I cannot recommend this book for use in a classroom. Students tend to take what is written as the gospel, or they don't have the confidence to question something that looks wrong to them. There are other books that are much better for use in an undergraduate course in polymer chemistry.

Seymour/Carraher's Polymer Chemistry is carelessly written
This nominally comprehensive textbook on polymer chemistry is filled with information, but appears to be carelessly edited. Since this is the fifth edition, it may be that material added throughout the editions have been tacked on to existing material without trying to integrate it into the previous material. Many times, the same information is repeated in subsequent paragraphs with different words. I have found many typo, spelling and chemical formula errors in the text.

Unorthodox and unbiblical revival methods and message
Another book on how Finney was a "great evangelist". Obviously, those who support Finney and his theology don't have a clue on what is orthodox/Protestant/Reformational theology. Finney was a maverick who had no theological supporters. Obviously, if you deny the cardinal doctrine of the Reformation (justification by faith alone) who would ever want to support your cause unless you believe in self-salvation apart from God's grace and Christ's perfect atonement.
