So-so
This was a mediocre book relying on the success of the other two books to boost sales. I don't think it would have gone very far on its own. The writing was much more shallow than most of Clarke's other books, and the characters were even more uninteresting.

One thing I really love about Clarke's books, especially 2001 and 2010, is the description. 2061 didn't have much of that; there was a sense that we had already seen these things before so they didn't need to be described again.

The book wasn't all bad. The redeeming feature is the premise. In the beginning Dr. Heywood Floyd (who I was glad to see again) was on a ship that landed on Halley's comet, which was an interesting twist. I've never read a SF book about landing on Halley's comet before. In the meantime, another ship is hijacked and ends up stranded on Europa, a moon of Jupiter that mankind has been forbidden to land on. The ship that Floyd is on is sent to rescue the other ship. It was an intriguing plot line and more could have been done with it. As usual the characters are uninteresting, and there seem to have been more useless characters in this book than in most of Clarke's books.

I certainly wouldn't call this a must-read for anybody. It's a fast book to read and somewhat entertaining while it's being read, but I doubt I'll remember it very long.

Good adventure, but not much added to the trilogy
It was a bit odd that the first trip to the Halley comet (the reason why the story is in 2061) was in a space ship full of tourits instead of astronauts, but it was interesting anyway. The depiction of the new melted Europa were good as well, and the adventures happened there fun as well.
But as a continuation of 2001 and 2010, it is a bit disappointing. It lacks the uncanny riddles of 2001 and simply repeats part of the ideas of 2010. The end of 2010 made buy 2061 in the following week, but 2061 didn't make me buy 3001 that fast.

Another Great One
I think Clarke's 2061 stacks up well with the two preceding odysseys. I believe the plot was well-developed with its two separate, yet inevitably linked parts. The famous Dr. Heywood Floyd relaxes while on his way to rendezvous with Halley's Comet while his grandson sets his sights with Galaxy on his way to the forbidden landing satellite of Europa. With the beautiful twist of the force landing on the Jovian (now Luciferian) moon and the rescue mission that the Universe is then sentenced to, the suspense becomes great and the awe plentiful. Clarke's lucid description of the planets, moons, and new-found life are real, stunning, and exciting. The recurrence of the 'spirit' of Dave Bowman and the secret of the mysterious Monolith in a more subtle manner simply add to the essence of the well-formed plot. The characters come alive about their realistic struggles in the Space Age. Clarke is a remarkable author, and has proved once again his superiority with the wonders of Space in his third odyssey.

Good but not good enough
The Stories taken from the "Tales of Terror and Mystery"tion are good but the others are quite horrible. Also the version I have has 1 story missing "The Confession" and a fantastic tale from "T&M" is not part of this collection. Production values average. Buy that collection instead. A much better deal.

Gems of their time
Writing in the early part of this century, Doyle (best known for creating Sherlock Holmes) created a series of horror stories with a bent towards spiritualism and mystery. The selection is a good range of work with some very strong entries. "The Case of Lady Sannox" and "The Leather Funnel" are particular stand-outs. Some of Doyle's is more dated than others, but still definitely worth a read.

Junior OBGYN student
Please do NOT buy this book. Unfortunately, it _still is_ the recommended text for our school's OBGYN rotation, like most schools...but that's b/c the ACOG recommends recommends it...I used it anyway - and it's poorly written, contains about only 1/2 (the really cursory, simple 1/2) of what you will be asked, is woefully short on many OB subjects, and very old on gyn-onc Tx and procedures. It _is_ readable in a 6 wk rotation - but most students will buy this in the 2nd year to go with their pre-clinical courses - to which it is not at ALL suited. The only good point is that it has some 1500 multiple-guess questions in the back which are usefull for step 2... but it doesn't make it worth it, since you can buy the PreTest book, which is much better for exam prep. I would recommend the Lange Basic OBGYN book by Cunningham instead. I'm not even going into OB - but I got ALOT more out of that book than out of the Beckmann text - which I have grown to despise after seeing the other books available. I can't believe so many students are encouraged to waste their money - and worse, their time - on this thing...

A Good First Look
This was the recomended text for my Ob/Gyn clerkship in medical school. It was pretty comprehensive yet chapters were short enough that a busy student can manage two or three per call night. It was good preparation for our exam, which at the University of Iowa, was the S.H.E.L.F. exam. This text tackles topics from hydatidiform mole and vestibulitis to hypertension and depression. The scope of this book encompasses not only all subspecialties in Ob/Gyn but also primary care, ethics and anatomy. Because of the nonintimidating conciseness of the many chapters in this book, I was able to overlook the initial lack of interest in OB/Gyn that I took with me the first day of that rotation. I was also able to excel on this clerkship. I still refer to this text on occasion, even as a second year Ob/Gyn resident. Third year medical students would be doing themselves a favor by checking out this easily afforded text. Not only is it an excellent resource, study guide and starter book for me, it changed my life.

computer simulation of dynamic models
It is a brief review based on my past memory when I saw the book on the desk of a professor, a colleague at University of Tenessee, Knoxville. The book, Dynamic Models in Physics is a good reference book to improve upon similiar courses in physics departments, particularly for second year physics undergraduates who have completed two semesters of a calculus based introductory physics, and are about to start in a year or two an instruction in Goldstein level of mechanics. I can use the book gainfully even in my own course of a 300 level mechanics course, and if book can be seamlessly adopted to excell spreadsheet, can seve as a companion textbook.

I may have to leave now, and probably i will write a more candid review if i have the book on my desk. I am taking this opportunity to request the authors if they can rush a copy to me. I remember vaguely that the book has a good coverage on normal mode analysis that i use in my diffraction based simulation of materials' structure-property.

Sorry for rushing the review 1

Great short stories
I was really looking for a book on real accounts of ghosts in New England. I used to have a book like that, but loaned it to an ex-friend.

I really did however enjoy reading this particular book, even though it was not exactly what I was looking for.

I would recommend this book to anyone that like to read ghost stories.

When is an anthologizer not an author?
I purchased this book believing it had as yet unread stories by my beloved professor, Charles J. Calitri, only to find that it is a collection (and a very fine one) of stories meant to be used as a high school text, with most stories followed by a poem appropriate to their meaning. I am merely rather disappointed, having believed it to contain more of Calitri's work; to list Jennings and Calitri as "Authors" is surely misleading.

A Muddled Effort
If you can look past the poor design and layout, the careless editing and abysmal proofreading, and the overall cheap quality of the book (including fuzzy and irrelevant photos), there is at least a little food for thought here. For a critic who is normally so concise and clear in his theatre reviews, Marowitz proves to be a rambling and unfocused sort in a longer forum. He has some interesting ideas, but they tend to get lost in the muddled and inconsistent style. Probably a must-buy for the diehard theatre enthusiast who wants to stay informed, but a much better overall treatment of the topic can be found in Richard Hornby's "The End of Acting".
