I don't think I'll ever view the medical profession the same way I did before reading this book. The Healers does what only history can do - it tells the truth about beauty. In this case, it strips the profession of its aura, letting the reader see some of the dirty laundry (George Washington's physicians, for example), as well as its heroes (or heroines as the case may be for medical education reformers). It certainly helps to put managed care, technology, money and the profession in perspective. It's a timeless treasure in my opinion.

This book was cool. It certainly lists a lot of songs...but if you have the knack for it, you could make up a lot that are better than some listed. But all in all it really helped my campaign, I wouldn't say it is a must buy but it does help.

I studied out of 7 different preparation books, and this one, by far is the worst one! The questions in this book are really difficult, tricky and unlike the CLEP exam! The questions in the actual CLEP exam arent tricky like the SAT or GRE, they are straightforward. For some reason, Peterson's has decided to put in SAT-like questions on their practice exam. This book should be thrown out of the market because its NOTHING like the real exams! I would recommend Princeton Review's Cracking the CLEP, and Review for Clep Examination by Comex Systems. The REA also writes really accurate practice exams. If you are taking English, I also recommend you purchase "The Writer's Reference" by Diana Hacker. That was probably the most helpful book in brushing up on your English.

I found the practice exercises in this book to be very helpful, and I did really well when I took the CLEP afterwards.

Looking to maximize my ability on the CLEP tests to avoid taking numerous classes that I have no interest in. If you'd like to get practice on these tests, than this book may help.

This is a solid, well-produced hardback, with 31pp of introduction, and 228 of text. ISBN 0-88402-088-6. As well as being in the 'Corpus' series, it is also 'Dumbarton Oaks Texts 5'.

The volume is the first critical edition of this anonymous 9th century work. The Synodicon vetus contains a description of every church synod from the beginning to his own time. Earlier material is usually abstracted or inferred from works like the Historia Ecclesiastica of Eusebius.

The introduction contains a solid discussion of the date of the work, with a detailed investigation of all the manuscripts and editions and a stemma. The work was first printed by the Lutheran J. Pappus in 1601 from a poor copy made by the dubious copyist and trickster Andreas Darmarios, and sold to Pappus. All subsequent editions have been reprints of this text.

The text itself consists of the Greek with a facing English translation. While I cannot evaluate the quality of this, it is certainly readable and seems close to the text. The footnotes are limited, but useful. A critical apparatus is provided, and the volume closes with an index.

One curious feature of this work, is that a revised version (labelled SV2) exists. The text of this is also included, but, curiously, not a translation.

The work is of questionable historical value, since the author was an enthusiast rather than a scholar. An example is that this work is the first known to mention the legend that at the First Council of Nicaea, the real gospels were separated from the apocrypha by piling them all on an altar and coming back the next day when, of course, the real ones had miraculously sorted themselves to the top (ch. 35, p.29).

Dr. Duffy has done the world a favour by making this work available to us all.

This was a poorly designed study guide for the National Boards in Psychiatry, with many badly thought out questions. Internal inconsistencies, confusing questions, or downright incorrect material was not hard to come by. For example, strategically omitted "nots"--as in "which of the following do not occur"--transformed some questions to nonsense. Furthermore, half the questions are of the now-obsolete "K" type. I would advise those preparing for the boards to save their money and apply it toward a prep course or another book.
